Beer distributor protest snarls Melville traffic
Demonstrators say Budweiser distributor Clare Rose of Melville is harming Long Island workers by hiring out-of-state labor for its new plant in Brookhaven after accepting tax-abatements to build it.

About 400 protesters are demonstrating against beer distributor Clare RoseInc. in Melville, saying the company has hired out-of-state, non-union workers to build a new facility in Brookhaven.

The demonstrators, who wore union T-shirts and hats and honked car horns, represent several unions that say their out-of-work members would have benefitted from the work in Brookhaven.

A union leader stopped short of calling for a boycott of Clare Rose products, but said there are other products that support union members.

Earlier this month, local labor and contractor officials called for the protest saying that Clare Rose, the local Budweiser wholesaler, is receiving taxpayer-funded property tax abatements for its new $45-million distribution center while importing cheaper labor from Kentucky to do the job.

"We have 35 percent unemployment and they are bringing in people from Kentucky who work for lower wages," James Castellane, president of the 65,000-member Nassau-Suffolk Building Trades Council, said at the time.

The council, the Long Island Federation of Labor, which represents 210,000 workers, and the Long Island Contractors Association held a news conference to announce the Wednesday rally against Clare Rose in Melville.

"Our members are paying for those abatements while sitting at home," Castellane said.

Clare Rose board chairman Sean Rose has said that he has tried to compromise with local unions, but that the cost of the building would have been 42.6 percent more if he used all-union labor.

He has said there will be a union presence on the job and most of the work will go to Long Islanders.

I dont know who's in a union or not, but shouldn't a company be free to use the most cost effective method for building the plant? Compromise, hire only LIers who are not union and will take a cheaper hourly rate.

GUESS IT ALL DEPENDS ON WHAT DEAL WAS STRUCK BEFORE THE WORK BEGAN
USUALLY YOU DONT SEE THIS TOO OFTEN
THEY MUST HAVE USED A NON-UNION GUY DOING A JOB SLATED TO BE UNION
I'VE SEEN THAT HAPPEN AND DEPENDING HOW TIGHT THE UNION REPS SHOES ARE THAT DAY.....

BUT BRINGING IN HAYSEEDS FROM KENTUCKY IS BULL
AND SOMETHING THAT NEEDS TO BE ADDRESSED IMMEDIATELY

ALSO I BELIEVE ITS JUST POSTURING FOR FUTURE LONG ISLAND PROJECTS
IF YOU GET MY DRIFT
