Title: Tanguay to Isles now an (E4)
clebo99 - July 10, 2009 02:25 PM (GMT)
I know Eklund is usually more wrong that right but an E4 means that he's hearing it from a few confirmed sources. I think that would be a great pickup......If we were to get Jovo as well, then we do have a young team that is rebuilding but has a chance to at least complete for that 8th spot. If Garth pulls those 2 moves off (assuming that Jovo comes for a good price/deal), I'd be very happy.
Isles5 - July 10, 2009 02:31 PM (GMT)
until i hear it from a reputable source i just cant get excited about it... and so far tanguay and jovo rumors have only come from that site

stevedepot - July 10, 2009 03:27 PM (GMT)
Steve Zipay from Newsday had a lil snippet about tepid interest around the league for Tanguay so
it's only fitting that this rumor surfaces on EK's site.
talented free agent, still available, still young, coming back from shoulder injury + Isles probably looking to get a bargain? eh, who cares...no thanks.
He won't make that much of a difference if there questions about him coming in to begin with.

I'm hearing some stuff about Lecavalier to the Isles!
Yes, I am serious. I'm sure its BS, but its nice dreaming about.

There were rumors on newsday.com. It turns out that was a couple of days ago, though. Just trying to pass things along, get everyone talking. What's the worst case, it doesn't happen? Then we get to complain about Snow.

No way we get him. We don't have a kings ransome to pay and that is what it will take. You are talking an all star, two prospects and a pick and we don't have that to pay.

Its because we are the team with the most cap room, and were so bad, anyone we get "makes sense on many levels."

"Hey this guys not worth crap and he's got a big contract, let's trade him to the Islanders"
only thing is, is the guys who write this stuff havent noticed that Garth has not made that play. Even guys like Koslov, Fedotenko he paid them thier worth or even a little less for the production we got and wasn't spending stupid on July 1. Good shopper or forced penny pinching? :dontknow: But we're not taking on some huge contract because we have the room.
People take us for chumps. We are not chumps post milbury, we just havent learned to put a winning team together, but we are at least heading in the right direction.

Chumps no? Improved to make a run at the playoffs? Not even close. This team is geared up to make a run for a second straight 1st pick. It's not what I wanted when I signed up for STS after Tavares was picked. I expected an effort at least to shape this team towards respectibility.

I too am disappointed that there were no major FA pickups up front.
We are a better team this year than we were last yea with the Roloson pickup - fine. Goaltending was a necessity and I think Garth got the right stop-gap player.
I also think Koskinen will have a successful rookie year in the AHL and will quickly take over the starting position there.
Despite what the team looks like now on paper, I truly believe we might squeeze into an 8th slot this upcoming season if the usual suspects manage to stay healthy. That's truly what this team's success will hinge on this year.
I expect Okposo to absolutely tear things up this year. I also expect Bailey to hit the 40-point mark.
Comeau is coming into his own and seems to be improving at a slow pace. But he proved to be consistant.
Bergenheim is a guy that I think can take his scoring to the next level if he continues to pay the price in front of the net.
But a late pickup like Tanguay would really make everyone feel as if there will be at least a guaranteed 20-goal scorer among the group.

stevedepot - July 14, 2009 02:48 PM (GMT)
According to a couple of news sources I've read (ie: faceoff.com)
The Florida Panthers are actively pursuing Tanguay.
http://www.faceoff.com/story.html?id=40176...topstories.atomI hope BD has a reputable "source".
I love his site, filled with GREAT writing from a brilliant, articulate mind and I'd hate to see it move more towards a rumor site that gets bashed for rumors that never come to fruition when his opinions and musings are what made him a must read in the first place.
I'm shocked that Tambellini would be in any package. Is Milbury the GM of a team looking to deal with us?

Bob Sauve, Alex Tanguay's agent, was kind enough to call me back this morning. He cited to me that not only have they not heard from the NY Islanders at all, any calls from him to them have not been responded to.
"They must be really busy over there," Bob mused to me, "Toronto and Burke had time to call me back. But the Isles? They haven't called me back at all."
"They must have a plan over there", Bob continued.

I like this site. It looks like he's put a lot of work into the reporting end of it.
Here is part of it:
Furthermore, as we have mentioned here, Andy Sutton, Blake Comeau and Jeff Tambellini have been rumored to be available for the right piece.
----
If I may ask, what could Sutton and Tambellini fetch? A bag of pucks?
Trading Comeau for anything less than a player of impact is stupid. Just because a player defends himself in contract talks, why does he have to be considered trade bait?

Is it fair to say that:
-Without Tanguay, the Isles have pretty much no new shot of making the playoffs
-With Tanguay, odds improve significantly?
Or is it saying too much of the guy / not enough about our current roster?

I think it's safe to say this:
If we get the injury bug again this season, with or without Tanguay, it's bottom of the barrel again.
Streit, Bailey, Tavares and Okposo will be the only bright spots to this season.
And maybe a healthy DP will improve morale, but not much more than that.
I'm just excited to watch Islander hockey and see what we have here.

I agree. Yet, am I right in saying the injury bug could be the cause of a poor strength/conditioning coach?

That's saying way too much about Tanguay. On a good team, he's a solid role player. He's had some very good (not great) seasons; he's been on a slight decline for a little while now. And there's no reason to believe that our defense can stay healthy or, if they can stay on the ice, that they're a playoff-caliber unit.

To figure that out you would need to look at every injury last year and judge based upon that.
Many injuries are caused by the puck hitting somebody (ala Sutton) or getting slammed into the boards too many times. This isn't exactly ballet these guys are playing.

Why too much stock in Tanguay. If he were that valuable he wouldnt be unsigned. I think you have that 'we need to sign a free agent and he's the last one with any talent left' feeling.
Just adding JT will have way more impact than Tanguay, and if we do sign him we will be just that much better but if we dont, we dont, no big deal.
Screw the FA market. We have alot of guys that will need some time in the NHL, alot of young players who want to make their mark and this season is going to be about that. It will be exciting watching these guys succeed. You'll feel like proud parents when they do.
I know alot of you guys are whining that we need a balanced mix and we needed to go to the FA market, but we really don't. Not this year. Let the dust settle on some of these draft choices we've made the last couple of years. If a trade comes along that suits us and Wangs pocketbook I'm sure we'll make it. Hopefully not at the expense of Comeau, but at the inexpense of Tambellini.

Isles made him a multiple year offer, I heard. He took the one year to play on Tampa so he can cash in afterbouncing up his numbers on lines with those players.
