Not sure how many soccer fans there are in Islander Country, but this was one of the biggest upsets the sport has seen in decades.
Spain, the best team in the world, was unbeaten in 35 straight matches and would have earned the world record of 36 straight victories had they beaten the Americans.
USA! USA!

Sure it's a big upset but it's not the World Cup we're talking about. The ConFed Cup is just a pre-tournament to the WC played next year.
Of Course it was a heroic effort by the US and I'm very impressed about the way the Americans sacrificed themselves in their defensive area.
I think it was good that Spain was brought down to earth and I enjoyed watching USA score on their few opportunities. Landon Donovan is btw one of the most underrated players in the world.
But in another aspect this needs to be a sole event, we don't need USA to be world leading in this sport too. ;)

I agree it's not the WC but this is still a pretty big tournament in the eyes of FIFA. Probably 4th behind the WC, European Cup and the Copa <something> that is played in South America.
And I agree that the USA doesn't need to be world beaters at everything, but besides basketball we are lagging in other sports. Baseball we can't win the Olympics or the World Cup. Hockey we aren't a top 3 team anymore. I'd like to see us be more of a power in soccer.

Awesome game...Altidore got lucky to get loose for that first goal and Spain never recovered to match US's intensity. Damn they played well. Couldn't believe what I was watching.
Spain got complacent, it wasn't a cake walk and things got real interesting on the world stage for our boys. Holy crap.

i watched this match and i was shocked by the result. And what made it even more interesting a RED card was given to Bradley (team USA)- this makes the 3rd red card this tournament!
good win by the Americans

Funny . . . I don't remember saying anything about the World Cup . . just mentioned a few simple facts . . .
There's always someone on this board with a " Yes ... but . . . "

Sorry man, I think I reffered to the first post about "the miracle on ice-simile".
Of course it was a great win, no doubt about it.
Too bad though Brazil won yesterdays game after 90 minutes of walking. The Bafana Bafana really were the team with the most offensive effort, but as always you need to score.
I'll predict the final: USA 1 - Brazil 3

Take a look at the Olympics, a lot of American medals there... Ok, maybe not always gold but still top contenders.
It's fun though to watch the American soccer team upset the "better" European and South American teams. Just don't win the World Cup next year... :P

It was a great win for the U.S.A. it is their biggest win to date, no its not the world cup but its probably the 2nd biggest tournament that the U.S. competes in and they beat the #1 ranked team and they did so playing an exciting style. they defended their butts off but they took the game to spain as well.
Donovan has stepped up in this tournament, he always had talen but he usually gets intimidated when the U.S. plays abroad. but hats off to him for stepping it up.
Altidore's time in spain is paying off he is only 19 and if he can now get some playing time in the 1st division it will only help the U.S. to progress. if the team is ever going to be a giant it need to get its players to Europe and out of the MLS, playes just dont improve playing here in the states
