Title: Eklung pulls a major "rumor" out for the Isles..

* I just talked to an NHL Exec who said that the Islanders are planning more for their draft party of 17,000+ than drafting one of the BIG 3. "The Isles may also announce at the draft that they have acquired the negotiation rights of the Sedins to that crowd."

This guy comes up with the most wacky stuff.

Why would the Isles want the Sedin twins? I have never been a fan of the twins as they have not impressed me. Sure, they average about 25 - 30 goals/season, but I think the Isles would better off without them.

Ziggy16 - June 20, 2009 06:23 PM (GMT)
so when the isles take hedman, youll still get 2 offensive players who will give you 55-65 total goals a year..

Think about this. . .

Remember what it cost to bring Ryan Smyth over? Ok, now multiply that by two. That is how ridiculous this "rumor" really is. Forget about it.

4CUPZ - June 20, 2009 08:11 PM (GMT)

Swedish website expressen.ca is reporting Henrik and Daniel Sedin are seeking a long-term contract extensions with the Vancouver Canucks comparable to the 12-year, $73 million dollar deal Henrik Zetterberg signed to stay in Detroit.

The Canucks' twins have pitched a package that would equal the term Zetterberg received, but the Sedin's cap hit and expected salary is notably less.

The Sedin's offered a 12 year, $63 million dollar extension with a cap hit of just over $5 million based on how steeply the contract declines in the last few years.

The offer was made and quickly dismissed by Canucks management earlier this week. The proposal would give the Sedin's close to market value and would provide the Canucks with some cap relief even though many NHL sources insist, on the open market this dynamic duo will command upwards of $7 million or more.

Vancouver is believed to be more interested in a shorter term and has yet to creep above $6 million in the negotiation.

In an interview with Vancouver radio station CKNW on Thursday, Daniel Sedin had no comment on the story.

"I don't want to talk about it," Sedin told CKNW. "When this gets done, we will talk, but right now well keep it between Mike (Canucks GM Gillis) and ourselves."

The Sedins want to stay in Vancouver and have tabled what they believe is a fair solution, but they're keenly aware of their marketability and the fact the clock to unrestricted free agency is rapidly ticking down.

Screw all the predictions.

:nono: no shenanigans Garth, just take JT and we keep building.

Isles72 - June 20, 2009 10:05 PM (GMT)
if theres a shred of truth to this it has to be because the isles are drafting Hedman and picking up the Sedins makes for a pretty impressive set of guys for Victor to lean on while learning the ropes .

the isles could take it up a notch and sign Ohlund july 1 too

yeah , I dont buy it cause it comes from eklund -but its not really that far fetched

ronski631 - June 20, 2009 10:28 PM (GMT)
have we not learned what long-term contracts can do?

i like the twins and i'd kill to have them here. but for what they are asking for...i think we're better off w/o their contracts.

Eklund smokes crack, by the way

this was the best joke "rumor" I ever heard...thanks for the laugh..I needed it.

Dr. Generosity - June 21, 2009 02:47 AM (GMT)
And if and when the Islanders announce any deal for any current hockey player of any significance on draft day, no matter who the heck it might be, Eklund will proclaim that he was right about everything except the details.

When you think about it, it makes sense, but the price is too steep for an organization trying to restock after trading a lot of young players in the past.. A deal of this magnitude would reverse all that was accomplished last year during the draft. I can not see the Isles selling the ranch, so to speak, just for the rights and risk losing the twins to free agency.

Snowman39 - June 21, 2009 04:52 AM (GMT)
If this ever happened (its bullshit as we all know), but if it ever happened the pick would have to be Hedman.

Isles72 - June 21, 2009 11:07 AM (GMT)
Sedins turn 29 in Sept and want 12 year/63 mil deals = 41 at retirement /5.25 cap hits

most of these deals are front loaded so that by the time the last 3 years come around they are making peanuts which = who cares if they retire in year 9 of the 12 year deal cause they'd have made the 60 mil out of 63 already.

if snow can pull this off and add Hedman this week I'll be a happy camper

dragoneye - June 21, 2009 02:40 PM (GMT)
Why overpay for their rights when you can overpay for them later in salary? So many reasons not to do it. There are other options for 12 - 14 million per year.

not really... getting their rights may take a guy like tambellini or some bridgeporters.
it's pretty clear vancouver isn't getting anywhere talking to them. and so they'd rather get something instead of nothing on jul 1.

and typically, if a team gets the rights, it means they're ready to sign the player(s) no problem.

Actually I heard elsewhere that this "rumour" (which scares the piss out of me) was also on thefourthperiod.com But I don't know who reported it.

Yes, you'd think that they (or anyone for that matter) would shy away from the long term contracts they seem to be looking for. Especially considering the cap will go down the next two years.

Dark Helmet - June 22, 2009 01:18 AM (GMT)
We're still talking about this as if it's a possibility?

I'll add some fuel to the fire
Gaborik just bought a house in vancouver
his best friend is Demitra
cant see the nucks affording Gaborik and the Sedins

I think the canucks are going to trade a d-man (Bieksa?) to Fla to get the negotiating rights to Bouwmeester within the next 48 hours

bouw and gaborik will be their splash while they try to get something for the Sedins negotiating rights

yep...I wouldn't doubt it.
It was all over message boards and news sites yesterday (rumor) of Gaborik going to a real estate agent and or seeking/buying property in BC.

That's a great atmosphere to play but I'd be surprised if Vancouver didn't work something out with the Sedins.

I still see that getting done. They both have young kids, live up there but go to Sweden in the off season so who knows...anythings possible.

I would hedge my bets that they never sniff this island.

;)

Hey Fellas I havent postef in a while I know I know too busy to post, but this would be a great if the price is right.

If we draft my boy Johnny T and sign the Sedin Twins imagine this lineup?

Okposo-Weight-Tavares
Sedin-Bailey-Sedin
Comeau-Nielsen-Bergie
Hunter-Park-Jackman

Streit-Komisarek
Witt-Martinek
Sutton-Gervais

Dipietro
Danis

I would salivate at that. Of course Henrik sedin would have to move to wing who knows if he would do that and we would have to sign Komisarek but I like those lines a lot.

I agree with you that it would be great to have the Sedins at the right price. But that is nothing like what the lines would look like if we were to get them. The Sedins would be the only legitimate first line players on the roster, and would never be on the second line. And also, I'd rather move Weight to a wing (he's proven he's okay with it, as he did it multiple times throughout last season) and keep whicheer Sedin that is at center.

Just bringing this thread to the top here to suggest something.

All day long, as ridiculous rumors start popping up on HockeyBuzz or other sites, blogs or message boards.

PLEASE do not start new threads on the main Isles News forum.
Keep it in this thread if it's EKLUND stuff...or start a new one in this RUMORS forum.

Will be a busy day and it would stink to have a half dozen
"Ek says Isles make play for Hossa (E2)" ..so what do you guys think threads in Islanders News.

News and rumor sites to also keep an eye on today besides this one:

tsn.ca

thefourthperiod.com
cbc.ca

and of course botta bing's blog

Can we rename this thread for Isles rumors:

Anyway islandersindependent reports a offer has been made to Komsarek by the Isles...."but they believe he'll go elsewhere"
