Title: Report: Patterson Backs Lighthouse Development
Description: Newsday

Stop the Presses!

Kate Murray is Actually doing something for the lighthouse?

"That's great news," Murray said of the meeting. "In fact, tomorrow I'm going to ask Mr. Wang's permission to send the Lighthouse's environmental report to state agencies so they can start their review."

Picker, who attended the meeting with principal developer Charles Wang, said Paterson told them he has assigned a member of his staff to be a liaison to help expedite the approval process. Picker said the governor also said he would help secure funding for improvements to state roads such as the Meadowbrook Parkway and Hempstead Turnpike to mitigate traffic concerns.

Dude, when you post a link to an article you're supposed to put the main topic of the article. The main topic (and most important thing in this article) is that Gov. Patterson supports the project.

Getting back to the topic - This is great news. Any support whatsoever will be welcome in keeping the franchise where it belongs, Nassau County.

Just adding this story that's a week old.

Isles can relocate - but not to Canada
PAT HICKEY, The Gazette
Published: Thursday, June 04, 2009

Gary Bettman has spent the past few weeks talking about the National Hockey League's concern for the fans in its existing franchises.

Bettman's mantra has been: "We don't run out on cities."

It's a noble sentiment, but it hasn't kept the NHL and some of its member clubs from threatening to abandon existing markets.

A case in point is the New York Islanders, a once-proud franchise that would be happy to achieve mediocrity. Owner Charles Wang, who is trying to extort Nassau County and the Town of Hempstead into approving his plans for a multi-purpose development anchored by a renovated Nassau Coliseum, delivered a not-too-subtle threat after a public meeting with local politicians this week.

"We have many cities that are interested in us, but I haven't gotten back to them," Wang said.

On several occasions, Bettman has said Long Island could lose its team if Wang doesn't get a new arena. While the NHL is fighting to keep the Coyotes in Phoenix, you can bet that if Wang doesn't get his way, the NHL will allow him to move - unless he has a Canadian destination in mind.

and meet he did and look how positive things got when both sides negotiate on what they can get out of it eh? common ground seems like it can be alot more stable as well as reached after the threats.

I just wish this writer expounded more on his opinion as it relates to our team.

Webb20 - July 28, 2009 12:53 PM (GMT)
Now on the fast track?

Yesterday: Our Governor has a vision (LOL).

“The Lighthouse Project has the potential to be one of the most important economic development initiatives we have ever seen on Long Island and is precisely the kind of economic stimulus that we need here,” Paterson said. “That’s why I am directing our state agencies to expedite their review of this project. Our government agencies need to work diligently and swiftly to ensure that this project can move forward as quickly as possible so that we can begin to put people back to work right here on Long Island.”

stevedepot - July 28, 2009 01:41 PM (GMT)
Am I the only one questioning why so many politicians are now banding together?
More government funds for pet projects? Photo ops for future votes.
A win win situation? Even if this thing gets scaled down or doesn't happen, they can at least say they tried?

I don't know, at the end of the day, we're still fans and they're still politicians.

I'm with Mulefan, I will believe it when a shovel is in the ground but it is still a nice piece of positive news with our team.

Westfall18 - July 28, 2009 02:25 PM (GMT)
is this thing gonna finally happen?? August 4th we need to show our support.. Sure, I dont live on Long Island..but I spend my money there and believe that when you Island folk put your heads together you can do good things..hopefully they begin this soon..

Webb20 - July 28, 2009 02:43 PM (GMT)
I'm tired of the whole Lighthouse saga, but at this point I feel it's all or nothing and if we do want to have a future for the NY Islanders after their lease runs out we should support it. Unfortunately I think Wang went about the whole thing wrong(would've like to see the coliseum done already, with the rest of the project to follow), but it is what it is and we can't go back in time.

I talked with Dey last week and was told that if Wang had only gotten approval for the Coliseum first, and invested 400 million to rebuild it, the county would have a brand new facility and never would've moved forward on all the other stuff Wang and Co want to build. The Islanders would never recoup that investment without further development. Suozzi knew that, Wang knew that, so that's why they had to come up with the entire deal so the investments would be fiscally viable.

I still don't agree with alot of the stuff there looking to put at the coliseum sight..We got the best parking lot in the NHL for goodness sakes!!

No more tailgating, more traffic, longer time to get out of the newer multi-level parking garages
but on the flip side...revenue for our team and a return to stability?
Either way, we're getting our older, beautiful jerseys back eventually. We have some kids that
have some promise. Better days have to be ahead. Even though getting home will seem similar to leaving a Jets or Giants game.

But on a serious note, BOUT TIME.

tailgateing across the street at the other building and then a trolly to take you to the coliseum.

underground parking garages will have smart technology to guide you to the best way out through the radio or through electonic signage.

I think that's propaganda Dee.

it will still take twice as long to be "guided" out vs what we have now.
Being able to Mario Andretti it out based on strategic parking.

Tom, I can live with worse parking conditions even if they will be better.
yeah I'm old school.

I like being able to choose where to park so i can leave by a certain gate and get on the southern state quickly.

But now we'll have more cars concentrated in specific areas. Like robots, we will be guided by
a narration by Chris Dey reminding us to vote on our re-re-re-RE-polling of the all new GOAL SONG and reminding us about Project Hope, the Business Club and the February Fondue Fun pack.

J/K.

I'm sure it will be worth it. Especially if there's an LIRR extension link up at some point to ease the traffic flow.

Sounds like a ride at Epcot.

I will miss the expanse of parking for both the tailgaiting (I dont want to tailgate across the street then be trollied over) and quick exits. No more going out the entrance to the north parking lot and an easy escape. But it's coming. They cant possibly use wide areas for cars, they dont spend money.

Dee, it's included in the DGEIS.
But my concern is that it won't be as convenient. Sure everything will look great with state of the art stuff everywhere. But the convenience of walking to your car and getting out earlier without getting caught in a clusterpluck of traffic.
It will not be as smooth sailing as they make it out to be.
Those state of the art add ons are just as much there to distract your from the added time
as they are to make the overall experience better.
Good trade off yes. But I'm just voicing a concern. That extra 15-20 minutes if not longer makes a huge difference to some.
Not jumping down your throat so don't take it as such.

Mrs Webby - August 3, 2009 03:32 AM (GMT)
I'm not sure if this has been covered elsewhere, so if it has sorry for the duplication. I watched a re-broadcast tonight of News 12 "talk back" segment, where home viewers are invited to call in and give their opinion on a particular topic. The topic was "the Lighthouse." They had one proponent (a VP of LIBI) and one opponent (I"m not sure of his affiliation) in the studio, and Kate Murray on the phone. Wang and Rechler were invited but were unable to attend. Although not overtly, the MC Lea Tyrell was not a project supporter. I felt she was not a supporter by the tone and wording of her questions. She asked Kate Murray if the public could assume she was behind the project because she appeared with Gov. Patterson and other political and sports figures (that sports figures were behind the project came up more than once.) Kate said that meaning should not be taken from it. She appeared to make sure the public was aware that important hearings were coming up. She gave the date, time location for the Aug. 4th meeting. All callers put on the the air were against the project.

Mr. Dey -where were you? This is Cablevision- owned by Dolan doing all the talking. You have Chris Botta tellling the fans to put hockey aside for a moment and throw support for the Lilghthouse- then the Islanders are a no-show for a Dolan run program? No wonder you're worried. The press this will receive with the cross town rival owning the TV and newspapers accounts the Islanders can't afford to be invisible when interviewing is going on.

7th Woman - August 3, 2009 10:33 AM (GMT)
Mrs. Webby:

I'm glad you told me this. I will let the right people know how you feel.
This is not Chris Dey's ball game. It's not even Botta's.

Let me see what I can find out about that call in segment.

PS: News 12 does a horrible job on anything to do with the LIghthouse and you are CORRECT in stating WHY. They ARE the evil Dolan Empire and I can only hope that the new FIOS local news service works out.

Also, TV 10/55 does a much better job covering the news of Long Island than Dolanvision. And it doesn't repeat every freakin' half hour.
