Hempstead's Murray agrees to Lighthouse meetingBY EDEN LAIKIN | eden.laikin@newsday.com 6:43 PM EDT, June 2, 2009 After several contentious months - and some pointed exchanges Tuesday - Hempstead Supervisor Kate Murray and Lighthouse development principal Charles Wang said they have agreed to meet to discuss the approval process for Wang's mixed-use proposal for 150 acres around a renovated Nassau Coliseum.
The meeting will be Friday at the Mineola office of Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi.
Tuesday, at a meeting of the Long Island Regional Planning Council, Wang again criticized the length of the town's approval process and characterized as a "five-month delay" the time since he and co-developer Scott Rechler last met with Murray. She countered that the town is following procedures mandated by state law as it considers the proposal for a new coliseum, 2,300 residential units and more than a million square feet of offices and shops.
Murray said the town has moved in an "unprecedented, expeditious" way and that speeding up would put the town and developers at legal risk.
The announcement of the face-to-face meeting came as the Regional Planning Council designated Lighthouse as "regionally significant." Such a move can assist in the application for state and federal stimulus money as well as private funding.
Wang also said that he and Rechler will present the project to Gov. David A. Paterson tomorrow at his Manhattan office.
At Tuesday's meeting, held in the Nassau County Legislature's meeting room in Mineola, Murray pointed to the length of the approval process for other sizable developments, including the 476-acre Heartland Town Square in Islip (six years for an environmental review) and a smaller Wang proposal, Old Plainview (three years). To that, Wang responded, "I also pulled out of Plainview."
He has said that if he doesn't have a decision on the Lighthouse by October - the start of the next hockey season - he will explore other options.
Union representatives at the meeting said Long Island can't afford not to complete the project, which the developers estimate would create thousands of permanent jobs.
"There is nothing in this county more important to the future of the county than this project," said John Durso, president of the Long Island Federation of Labor. "We will not stand for it not being done."
On Friday, the town's consultants completed their review of the developer's environmental impact statement and outlined issues that still need to be addressed: traffic, parking and solid waste disposal.
Suozzi and several members of the council have suggested that the town bypass the customary approval sequence by opening the project to public comment now, before completion of the draft environmental impact statement.
But town officials say important issues need to be addressed first. And Tuesday, for the first time in the more than two years since the project was submitted, Murray said she hoped public hearings could be held this summer.
Murray and Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, whose district includes the coliseum, said their main concerns are traffic, air quality and water.
Council members who spoke expressed support for the project. One, Jeffrey A. Kraut said he lives in East Meadow - "22 inches from the 'e' in Lighthouse" - and is more excited than concerned.
Having the development next door "can't be worse than the three days of the Grateful Dead [concerts] at Nassau Coliseum," Kraut said of the parking and traffic congestion. |
lol. and the fact that it is the Dead playing for three days.

Hey now, as someone born in the '50s, the Dead are held dear to me. I've seen countless shows at the Coliseum when Jerry was alive.

The meeting started out as yet another he said, she said, but when the floor was actually turned over to the regional planning board the mood changed.
The tone of the panel was actually scolding.
Doug and I sat with our jaws dropped. We couldn't believe it.
And Joe Ra was shot down and told to sit down.
It was amazing.
I'm not sure if this is proof that all is good, but it's cerainly a glimmer of hope.

I never was a hippie. :nono: I like long improvisational music by musicians whos top prioirity is the music and not the image, that could be blues, jazz, country western, psychedelic or reggae and the Dead cover all the bases with their versatility. Plus since the age of CDs and the Internet I've never had to spend a dime on music as all their shows(200+ and counting in my collection) are public domain.

1. The Town of Hempstead has committed to making a decision regarding the completeness of their studies at a Town Board meeting on July 7. This July 7.
2. Suozzi adamantly declared, “This project is no longer just in the hands of the Town of Hempstead.” It seems pretty clear that Murray was sick and tired of her Town being the poster child for the lack of movement on the Lighthouse Project. Suozzi went out of his way to list all of the other parties involved, including the State, the County and the developers. The message was clear: everyone needs to stop making this all about Murray.
3. Murray, Suozzi, Wang and Rechler agreed to a rough schedule of responsibilities, a document that will be made public within ten days. Said Suozzi: “Everyone will work together to make sure everything is being done in a timely maner.”
Kate Murray said the meeting was “great” and “we’re going to work cooperatively.”
Wang called it “a wonderful moment” and said it “sets a new tone. We’re not looking back, we’re looking forward.” He offered the potential for compromise by reiterating his stance for months regarding the Town: “If you say no, tell me what it is you don’t like and then I’ll tell you yes or no.”

Wang and Suozzi made her the poster child.
Now they'll all step up and move forward with this?
Yep...plenty of time till elections.
B)
Just like I said a long time ago. Things will work out. Wang's strong arm tactics and
public B movie acting frustration (like that interview with Howie Rose back in April)
are just for show and grabbing attention.
Way to go...alot of the BS, the rally's and false alarms etc have been mopped out of the way
and now they can work towards something that projects POSITIVE vibes throughout the NHL about our team and it's future.
Let's hope Wang doesn't meddle and Snow continues to learn on the job.
This is hurdle one of many around a race track. The hurdle I'm curious about as are all of you
is our 1st round pick...
but damn this is a great start and a what a way to start off the weekend eh?

Steve, I will bow to you on this one because while I'm keeping myself up to date on the happenings of this project, I don't know what a lot of it means. I'm well aware this is a very good thing, but how good exactly? Does this mean that there is a better than 50% chance of this happening now? Or does it just mean that Wang will get his answer of "no" a lot earlier?
