County Executive Thomas Suozzi has waded into a 20-year-old land scandal as he quietly tries to sell off most of Nassau's 99-year leased property in Mitchel Field, a former air base developed with colleges, office buildings, recreational and cultural facilities.
Without soliciting bids or giving public notice, Suozzi has accepted offers of purchase from two leaseholders for nearly 13 acres of public land in the county's sprawling office park that includes the Nassau Veterans Memorial Coliseum in Uniondale.Quentin Roosevelt Associates, represented by the law firm of Nassau's Democratic Party attorney Steven Schlesinger, is purchasing the 10.3-acre site of its office building for $8.52 million. Bergwall Realty, an original leaseholder, is buying its 2.2-acre site for $732,300.
The deals are expected to go to the county legislature for approval on June 8. Suozzi is looking to sell most of the county-owned land to the current tenants, who own the buildings on the properties.
