Title: Gillies

I know this going back a ways....but does anyone know or have any clips of the first time Gillies came back to NVMC as a Sabre? I wonder what kind of ovation he got. He was such a great Islander and it's too bad he couldn't finish his career with the Isles.

I probably saw the games on the tube, he was always a fan favorite. I am sure he never got booed, but I do wonder if he ever fought an Islander after leaving the team.

Sorry to say, I don't remember, but it's hard to imagine Clarkie fighting an Islander, he wasn't much of a fighter at all after he left us on waivers and I doubt his heart would have been in it, that's for sure.

Heck, I wouldn't have fought Brian Curran either. :D

As for people booing Clarkie, I do remember he got razzed quite a bit during the 83-84 season, which was a miserable season for him. Then he stood up in the playoffs and was our greatest player---a lion roaring in autumn. It was amazing to watch.

Check out his stats for that year:

Reg. Season Playoffs
Season Team League GP G A Pts PIM GP G A Pts PIM
1983–84 New York Islanders NHL 76 12 16 28 65 21 12 7 19 19

If I recall correctly (don't have the team stats handy) he was our top scorer in the Drive for Five---above even Trots and Boss, even though he was no longer on their line.
