Consultants eye Lighthouse plans' environmental impact
BY EDEN LAIKIN | eden.laikin@newsday.com 10:33 PM EDT, April 30, 2009
Environmental consultants hired by Hempstead Town to review the Lighthouse Development Group's 6,500-page draft statement on the environmental impact of the proposed 150-acre mixed-use development say the draft is incomplete and are calling for a revision, a move they describe as routine.
The consultants, at Frederick P. Clark Associates in Rye, said the developers have not adequately addressed issues outlined by the town, including the impact of noise, traffic and parking, Coliseum pregame weekday peak hour traffic, and how garbage would get from housing units to the collection site.
They said the draft also overstated how many secondary jobs would be generated by construction and did not document other claims, including the potential market for the housing units and how many children it would add to the Uniondale school district.
"Virtually every area needs some help, some work," said David Stolman of Frederick P. Clark. "On the other hand . . . not every area is of equal importance. Traffic is very important in a place like the Town of Hempstead, water supply is very important, air quality, fiscal impact."
Stolman said environmental statements typically require several revisions. He could not estimate how long revisions might take before the town and its consultants deem the statement ready for review, kicking off a 30-day public comment period. The Lighthouse group would then prepare a final revision.
In the next phase, the town board would consider new zoning for the site and the developers would learn what exactly could be built.
Lighthouse officials did not return repeated calls seeking comment Thursday. Charles Wang, co-principal of the group and owner of the New York Islanders, has criticized how long approval is taking. He says he needs a decision by the town by October - the start of the next hockey season.
Nassau County Executive Thomas Suozzi, an outspoken proponent of the project, said he has not reviewed the documents but said the State Environmental Quality Review Act handbook says draft impact statements are not intended to resolve all of the environmental issues. "That should be done during the public hearing process.
"The parties have got to work together and, as a starting point, the town should get this before the public," he said.
Hempstead Town spokesman Mike Deery said it was "curious Suozzi didn't feel bound by the same urgency when it took him five years to advance the process." Suozzi and Wang first crafted a plan in 2003 to fund renovation of the Coliseum through development of the county-owned site.
The Lighthouse is a proposed $3.7-billion development with a renovated Coliseum at the center. It would include 2,300 residential units, a five-star hotel, two 450-foot towers, an athletic complex, a minor league ballpark and office space. |
Here's my problem...on Botta's site and another site, a politically active fan suggested that Murray had donations from Frederick Clark Associates to her campaign. Fine..
he posted this link for contributions...
http://www.elections.state.ny.us:8080/plsq...CATEGORY_IN=ALLGreat! Gotcha Kate!
My problem???
Reading the article I also questioned why Suozzi NEVER READ, excuse me....reviewed the environmental documents. Why not??? He's so damn behind this no??? Shouldn't he have reviewed them? Would you want your elected officials telling you they are for something when they haven't reviewed the G**DAMN thing?
So ok, I decided to check his campaign contributions remembering what a weasel he was being portrayed as each time he ran.
Here are his campaign contributions...
http://www.elections.state.ny.us:8080/plsq...CATEGORY_IN=ALLNice lump donation from Cablevision. What stood out MORE to me was the 3.5 million donation...excuse me...TRANSFER by "Friends Of THomas Suozzi".
So I click on the link and check the breakdown, or at least look for it and what do I find??
http://www.elections.state.ny.us:8080/plsq...J&eyear_in=2006" Miscellaneous Receipts"?????
3.5 million in miscellaneous receipts???
NICE work. who do you trust?
OlTimeHockey - May 1, 2009 03:55 PM (GMT)
I trust wang.......it helps me pee every morning.
Webb20 - May 1, 2009 06:46 PM (GMT)
A resubmit to Frederick Clark Associates will keep them busy, if they are kept busy it's by the hour and manpower which = $$$$ for Frederick Clark Associates.
I share your frustration steve, but you can't be surprised. Wang should have contributed to all their campaigns, maybe we'd already be enjoying watching Kate Murray with one of those oversized scissors cutting the ribbon to the new coliseum.

Will wonders ever cease. Newsday reports today that one of Kate Murray's political donors is a enviromental consultant the Town of Hempstead has hired, [from upstate New York, no less] who is advising them on the Lighthouse Project. Time for Murray to go. [Newsday, 5/2/09, page A6] A firm that has no political ties on LI, recieving work for donations. SUPRISE, SUPRISE, SUPRISE!!!

How about we're for the team and against the urbanization of Long Island, against a bad owner who bought the team under nefarious circumstances and who has ruined it after "saving it" and who stuck with Milbury, stuck with Yashin, stuck with meddling despite every thing he touches on this team turning to pot......how about we're VERY for the Islanders and believe Wang is just an owner, just like Milstein, Spano and Pickett, and NOT THE NEW YORK ISLANDERS?
I guess you can't be a Ranger fan if you don't love Dolan? Can't love the Blackhawks unless you believe Wurtz was a great owner......
Such conditions you put on us on every board, Moose.....I guess I'm not an Islander fan, nor is Steve.....we just like the players and that stuff they do on the ice?

Well put. I hope Mr. Wang receives what he needs only for one reason -- no MORE excuses about putting together a great hockey team. I've heard all the excuses, SMG, the building, the parking, bad weather formations, cross wind currents
blah, blah, blah...

If that bothers you, then you should be OUTRIGHT beside yourself that Wang hired his son-in-law as President of the Isles.
A guy who's knowledge of hockey can barely fill a thimble.
smittyrules31 - May 12, 2009 01:41 PM (GMT)
But the Islanders are a private company. Murray's father is being paid by the tax-payers. Wang can hire whoever he wants at no cost to the tax-payer. It may hurt the fanbase, but he's well within his rights to do so. Hiring a family member at an inflated salary AND at the expense of the taxpayers is a compeltely different picture....no?

The heck with HIM Dee, it's about US, the long suffering Islander fans who've put up with
incompetence and have a very low tolerance for more of the same.
That's why some of us go off every now and then...ok, maybe more often than not.

oltime... "The urbanization of Long Island"? How is developing this area going to do damage to LI as far as urbanization goes? Nassau county is already urbanized. Or at least suburbanized and has been for 30 years. You could have had that discussion back in 1978, but right now that ship has sailed.

Live at Charles Wang, Kate Murray Lighthouse faceoff
12:04 p.m.
Wang if on the offensive.
"I have to say what I believe
"I take issue with what was said. I believe it hasn't represented exactly what happened
I'm not a politician ... I don’t care if it's republican or democrat. I don’t care. Why don’t we vote Long Island for a change."
12:03 p.m.
Wang is about to respond.
11:57 a.m.
Where is the project today?
That's the question Murray just asked herself.
Here's her answer.
A memo was sent to the developers May 29 regarding the environmental report in which "experts outlined number of areas that still need to be filled in, still need to be supplemented by the developers."
She just added that the residents should know the town board is neither a proponent nor opponent to the project. Rather, they're the judge. You've heard that before, that she can't give her opinion of the project because she ultimately has to vote on it.
She ended with, "We're looking forward to moving this forward."
11:55 a.m.
"I believe we have absolutely moved the environmental process in an expeditious way," she said. And if she did anything more, it would have been illegal, she said.
11:51 a.m.
Murray begins by saying, "Thank you so much for inviting us... Delighted to be here." Too many jokes to make. Then she joked that she thought the discussion today would have been about who the Islanders select with the first pick. Ha ha ha.
Murray said she supports the notion that the Lighthouse Project is a project of significant impact to Long Island, or something to that effect. I have it on tape and will get the exact wording later. But the fact she used the word "support" and "Lighthouse Project" in the same sentence is interesting enough.
Now she's going through the history of how the Town of Hempstead has been fast-tracking this, etc. You've heard it before. When are they going to give her and Wang boxing gloves and let them at it!
11:50 a.m.
Murray's about to talk! |
so far...just as I suspected.
More to this than meets the eye than just blindly supporting Wang just for the sake of our Islanders. I take back all the stupid jokes I made about Murray. She is doing her job. She was never required to be at those inane rallies and Tom Suozzi photo ops.
If anything, I'm optimistic that this thing can be worked out on some scale...
and pessimistic in terms of Wang's intentions of grandeur or nothing.
Wang's rambling has no substance and comes across as political posturing/drama.
