Title: Ryan Smyth
Bossy22 - February 16, 2009 03:40 PM (GMT)
Reading the Spector this morning and according to his site, Hockey Night in Canada was reported as to saying that Avalanche are believed to be shopping Ryan Smyth. If it is a contract dump, does a team like the Isles pursue him? He has a no trade clause, but if his words were true about the Islanders, then he might be open to returnng...under contract (a contract Garth tried to get him with). Ryan Smyth playing on the other side of Okposo with JT in between......hmm...elbow...nudge..hmm. I'm not so sure it would cost us alot as most teams in the NHL wouldn't want the contract.

3POTI - February 16, 2009 11:33 PM (GMT)
I do it for a draft pick, as long as its not the #1...

Its hard to think about Ryan Smyth. That trade to land him and win one playoff game that season still to this day breaks my heart. If we didn't make that trade we would be a lot closer to a contender in this rebuilding process. Look at the seasons both Grebeshkov and Nihillson are having this year. Its frightening. If we could get him for none of our young guys you go and do it for leadership reasons. Otherwise forget the guy, he's already cost this team enough.

A little pet peeve of mine. Why do people mention Grebeshkov when talking about Ryan Smyth?
Grebeshkov was traded to the Oilers for Marc-Andre Bergeron.
Nilsson and O'Marra were traded for Smyth.

Same here.
Also, as far as Grebs and Nilsson having good years for the Oilers...if anyones really watched their games, Grebeshkov had an up down seaosn earlier in the year but has been playing steady lately and has decent numbers.
Nilsson has been an absolute enigma and Mactavish cannot figure him out. He has a maturation issue that is hampering him from becoming the superstar he thinks he is.
Defensemen take longer to settle into a role and it's very interesting how we have many looking to get rid of either Gervais or Campoli. We haven't seen either of them play their best yet and it would spawn more lament like this if one or either are moved.

we'd have to bring ted back then
nyrangerhater99 - February 17, 2009 07:50 PM (GMT)
Not a big ryan smyth fan, but if it costs us close to nothing, why not, he'll be a good influence on the young players and we'll have a garbage man on the powerplay.
:worthy: :worthy: Bro-jas

I honestly don't know.
I liked the time that he spent here. He is great to have in the locker room but I wonder if he'll like the idea of coming back to a team that is in a very different position that the one he left.

I think the best place for smytty would be to head back to edmonton
dragoneye - February 18, 2009 02:55 AM (GMT)
Put him on the first Whaaaambulance back to Oilville.
3POTI - February 18, 2009 03:50 AM (GMT)
I believe grebeshko didn't want to sign here...so, they traded him for a player that did want to...seems like a logical move..
nilsson just plain sucked..
omarra :dontknow: where exactly is he??????
can't say the Islanders traded away superstars here...I say garth knew what he was doing when he made the trade..
clebo99 - February 18, 2009 01:12 PM (GMT)
Now this is an interesting question.....
I say we do it if the price is low.....no way a 1st or 2nd rounder and no way one of the "good kids".
This would be a good move and equate us to signing a top tier FA in the off-season (which is something we cannot do). We get Smyth. We draft Hedman/Tavares. We have Okposo, Bailey back. DiPi is healthy. Streit will be back. We will still have a lot of cap room just to stay even with the loses of Guerin/Weight/Silly/Comrie/etc. If we trade Witt to say Washington for a pick we can get the pick we traded back.
Now that is a nice nucleus for a rebuild...and one I can stand behind.
clebo99 - February 18, 2009 01:14 PM (GMT)
Also, immediately make him captain...

Hey.... isn't he currently playing on a last place team? At least here he'd have more loot in his pocket to be in the same position...

Moving Tambellini to center. that will motivate him to blossom into the next Bossy.

His was here and left, what makes you think he would return.

He certainly looked good against us...reminded me of why I loved having him here for the few weeks that he was here.
