Islanders shopping Weight
TheFourthPeriod.com
According to New York Newsday, Islanders GM Garth Snow is actively shopping veteran center Doug Weight around the league.
Citing sources, Newsday claims Snow is looking for draft picks in exchange for the 37-year-old.
Weight, who leads the Islanders with 29 points, is currently on the injured list and cannot be dealt until he's healthy to play.
Various reports suggest the Columbus Blue Jackets, who lost star rookie Derick Brassard to season-ending shoulder surgery, are among the teams interested in Weight.
While nothing appears imminent, primarily due to Weight's injury, the Islanders are fielding offers and could also look to move fellow veteran Bill Guerin, the paper suggests.
From the Editor: It's only a matter of time before the Islanders blow things up. This team needs to. Say goodbye to Weight, Guerin, Mike Comrie, Brendan Witt, Andy Sutton, and whoever else... let the young kids play, get a better draft pick and go from there. It's not like things can get much worse. -- David Pagnotta
My take: Isn't this impossible to do because of cap reasons? I can see the Isles swapping Weight for draft picks, but if we move anyone else there has to be a salary return no?

At this time, your concerns are valid. Its too early in the season to do a fire sale because of the cap.
But by the time of the deadline (March 4th), almost all of the salary has been paid and the cap floor is not a concern any longer. That's when you can expect a fire sale to happen.

I really hope we can package guys like Guerin and Comrie to get a solid return. I see no reason why not. Guerin still has plenty of value at least. Especially since he is making it clear publicly that he still wants to continue playing (todays Newsday).
Sidebar: Doug Weight returns tonight. I smell a trade brewing.

Wait until Toronto moves up a bit and they think they can make the playoffs, then send Weight and whoever else for their 1st rounder. :letssee:

I just hope weight gets his 2 points here with us, before we ship him out.....he could be worth more by then.

Shouldn't we keep 1-2 of these vets around? We need someone to mentor the youngsters. I'm all for getting draft picks in this years draft, but would like to see a couple of guys stay.

Who do you want to keep? It's a valid question because the guys you'd want to keep would naturally in turn have the highest trade value. I could see keeping Comrie just because of the age and his improving chemistry with Comeau and Okposo. Other than that they should all go. If you want to keep Witt I could see that too, but I vote for him to go.
Nothing is going to happen until late February. I saw a rumored deal to the Blue Jackets for Weight that had a fairly intriguing return for us. The longer we wait, the better off we'll be (no pun intended).

Keep:
Okposo, Comeau, Bailey, Jackman, Hilbert, Campoli, Hunter, Streit.
Do what you wish with the others.

That's exactly how I feel.
Only thing to counter that is if there's other players that become available by then giving teams options.
Garth has a chance to do some good here.

Question on the Weight 1000 point thing. Who will get the puck if it is an assist on Bailey's first?? (Yes, I am on vacation with the boys out of school and bored)

http://www.hockeybuzz.com/blog/Eklund/On-G...ers--e3/1/18603Gaborik i knoe hes good when hes healthy (when is the key word), but it'll mean possibly giving up our prospects(1st rd. pick, okposo, etc. probably) i know gaborik is good but i just dont have a good feeling if we do trade our youth for this guy.
Thoughts?

unless we're giving the Wild some of our vets or draft picks, i don't see why not. but he's injury prone and i'm not sure i want another DP on the team

from SPECTORS
and I tend to believe this guy

| SPECTOR'S NOTE: Ignore any rumors you're hearing of Gaborik getting dealt soon or of teams lining up to acquire him as there's still concerns over his health which are killing his trade value. Until he gets in at least a month of continuous playing time there simply isn't much interest in him right now. |

LOL... Isn't that usually the case with them?
Nobody is going anywhere until AFTER the ASG for sure. We can't move them this far prior to the deadline because, as was mentioned earlier in the thread, it makes it difficult for the Islanders to reach the cap basement.
Additionally, teams will typically pay more at the deadline than they will prior to the ASG. Hasn't half this board played monday morning QB with what we got for Zhitnik and what Philly got for Zhitnik? Who got more and which was a deadline deal?
There might be a minor move, but there isn't anything going to happen with Guerin or Weight or Witt for atleast 2 months.....
so chill-lax (as the kids say)

This is BS. What do we possibly have to give to get Gaborik? We aren't giving up a shot at Tavares. No f#$%^ing way. So that rules out our first round pick.
Then what's left? We aren't giving up Okposo or Bailey or Comeau in some "combo package" for a player with legit health issues.
There is NO WAY we are in the Gaborik race because we simply don't have the bullets if it comes time to pull the trigger on such a deal.

Not if we are sane we don't. He's probably going to miss the rest of the year with hip surgery.
Trade them Comrie for him. Let Gaborik rehab here.
nyrangerhater99 - January 11, 2009 10:18 PM (GMT)
well, now Gaborik is on the ir so he won't be traded untill after the season. Even then who would trade just for the ritght to talk to him? Take your shots in free agency. Hope for the Sedin twins or maybe a big defenceman. But most of all, pray for #1 overall.
stonedcold39 - January 23, 2009 09:38 PM (GMT)
I agree they should go, but not for draft picks. We need someone solid. I'm not looking for a 30-40 goal scorer, but someone you've heard of. Yet, I do feel that a consistent goal scorer is all we need to make this team gel. Okposo may become one, but he's still inexperienced.
dragoneye - January 26, 2009 04:59 PM (GMT)
We'll probably end up with draft picks and Daniel Marois/Randy Robitaille players
