Title: Coach Scott Gordon
Description: How long do you give him?

Webb20 - December 21, 2008 02:57 PM (GMT)
Should Garth make a change? Should we give Gordon more time? Is our failures because of our coaching or is it because of injuries? Can this system work in the future?

So many questions. One fact is that we've lost 9 straight and 11 of 12. So I ask you at NYIC, just how patient should we be?

4CUPZ - December 21, 2008 03:03 PM (GMT)
SORRY SINCE THIS SEASON IS A TOTAL FAILURE
GIVE IT TILL THE END OF THE SEASON
WHO WOULD WANT TO WALK INTO THIS MESS ANYWAYS

eh, what else are we going to do? win the cup this year? i'm giving it till the end of the season.

waiting sucks

I voted for give it 2 years. The system works when it is played, we have seen it. I disagree with Scott being in the dog house. The injury bug has bitten us again this year. I really feel the Islanders need to revamp there training/conditioning program from top to bottom. Don't get me wrong teams have injuries but what this team goes through every year is ridiculous. Just my 2 cents.

Coach Scott Gordon

1. He does have some nice suits but his tie selection needs to improve :D

I am in full support of the overhaul that our team/organization is in the process of going through. Frankly, it should have happened a few years back. While the product on the ice can be difficult to watch at times, I think that adherence to a vision is necessary to make it happen (not overly rigid adherence, but staying within a framework). Two years, maybe even three or four, will be needed to eliminate the players that don't fit in with the style of play that is wanted here, develop the kids and bring in veterans those that do fill system needs. Gordon himself will also need time to learn how to coach at the NHL level (as did all those before him...even Arbour and Bowman).

When I think of the Isles current circumstance, I'm reminded of two things...one- the state of our economy/country. Over the years, many small decisions (a bill here, a tax cut there, spending here, invading/destabilizing countries here and there) have resulted in a mess that is going to take time and better decisions to get out of. And you can't separate the two. The second thing I'm reminded of is a certain Super Bowl winning team from the area. How a head coach and system was brought in that had veterans up-in-arms because of his "system". I know these are not perfect analogies but Dr. Generosity recently posted in the "Lemieux and Gretzky" thread what was (his usual) great insight and hockey sense. There's no quick fix. You need time, patience, a reasonable plan with good decisions being made by people who can execute the vision. No way can we know all of that after 35, 60 or even 82 games.

This organization has finally made a commitment to winning from within. We have a number of promising prospects and more good draft choices on the way (4 in the first 2 rounds this year...with the very real possibility of #1 or #2). I love that the kids are learning the value of a relentless forecheck and that the NHL is not the AHL/college. But we've been hit hard by injuries and are taking it on the chin. Fine. Aside from the injuries, I think this is all part of the learning curve...and maybe even some of the injuries are due to youth/inexperience.

While the hiring of Snow as GM still raises an eyebrow (or two) of mine, he has made the decision to revamp with youth. I strongly support that and also support our young coach. This year and next year may hurt to watch. But even in the midst of the $h!tstorm we throw out on the ice each night, there are some bright spots.

There, I said it. the kool-aid went down pretty easy and hopefully there's a pot of gold to be found at the end of some rainbow somewhere when these dark days come to pass.

My vote: Keep Gordon for at least two years.

EDIT: A little quote a friend sent me some time ago in an e-mail:

QUOTE
In his first season as Isles coach, Arbour taught his young squad how to play defence. While they finished last in the league for the second year in a row, they gave up 100 fewer goals and earned 56 points, up from 30 the year before. New York Rangers defenceman Brad Park said after the Islanders beat their crosstown rivals for the first time, "They have a system. They look like a hockey team." Arbour's coaching laid the groundwork for future success.

You can disagree about Gordon in the doghouse, but losing 11 of 12 has to fall on someone, and you know they say you cant put the entire team in the doghouse so it goes to the coach.

We got rid of nolan, Gordon needs sometime. We may need a change and next to go before the coach should be snow. This youth movement is at a slow pace and "garth must go" may not be too far off.

We all knew well before the season started this team would suck big time. We all knew that the Islanders had gone the route of rebuilding. What do you all really want? Yes, it's embarrassing. But did anyone hear really expect Stanley Cup glory?? I say let this team develop, give Scott Gordon a chance and lets see if we can build something here. Firing Coach Gordon now would be a huge mistake.

I chose what the majority has chosen...give him the 2 seasons...I thought Id be in the minority with that selection but I guess not. I think this is not the right team for this system. There are only a few players 'exceling' in his system right now (I.E. Hunter Guerin and Weight) I think if Go Go gets the right players his system will excel.

Gee, this poll seems a little loaded towards answer #1. "Off with his head" is the first answer listed, and it's the only one in caps. I'm surprised there isn't an icon like this next to it. And adding the phrase "and his system" to Gordon's name in each answer has the ring of "and the horse he rode in on," doesn't it?

Just my $0.02. :D

In his second half of his first year, Go Go needs to realize that our goals against is too high. One D man pinches, his partner and an ill-prepared forward are now caught in a 3 on 2 break.
Not in the off with his head camp. But, like Lucy, he has some splainin to do.

In all fairness to ME, Doc, the poll was created when we had just lost 10 straight.

:P

I guess the last response (missing of course) should be (in caps) "GORDON AND HIS SYSTEM ARE GODS GIFT TO THE ISLANDERS, GIVE HIM 1500 GAMES."

:D

As long as he wants to stay.
Just imagine our record if he was not our coach
