Theo Fleury, whose sometimes-brilliant NHL career ended with a suspension for substance-abuse problems while he was with the Hawks in 2003, is writing his autobiography for Chicago's Triumph Books. ''People need to understand why, what it was that made me do what I did,'' Fleury said. ''I knew I was crazy insane, and so did everyone else. I would go five, six, seven, eight levels below the streets of New York and party with people I didn't know -- freaks, transvestites, all kinds of shady people.'' The book is to be released in the fall of 2009

Theo Fleury fans - and you still see some Avs fans with his jersey at games - might be interested in a coming book he “wrote.”
It supposedly has lots of juicy stuff, and here’s an advance quote he gave to the publisher, Triumph Books:
“I think that people need to understand why. What it was that made me do what I did. I knew I was crazy insane and so did everyone else,” Fleury writes. “I didn’t hang out on the surface. I would go five, six, seven, eight levels below the streets of New York and party with people I didn’t know. Freaks, transvestites, all kinds of shady people. Or I’d be walking home from a game dressed in my custom made suit from Giovanni’s in Montreal and I’d stop and buy three or four bottles of wine. Then I’d head for the Chelsea Piers between 23rd Street and the Hudson River and hang with homeless guys around a burn barrel shooting the sh*t. I would ask them how they got there. I’ve always been interested by that kind of stuff. The Rangers must have been sh**ting bricks.”

What turned out to be a joyous day for Theo Fleury - he played in his 1,000th NHL game last night - began with some lingering unpleasantness from the night before.

Following a morning telephone scolding by NHL VP Colin Campbell, Fleury was fined $1,000 for responding as he left the Nassau Coliseum ice Tuesday night with a one-armed salute - caught on TV - to a fan holding up a sign with a large pacifier that read: "Abuse This!"

Said Fleury of his action: "It was stupid. It was dumb."

However, Fleury said Isles fans crossed the line by chanting "Crackhead Theo!" at him for the second straight Nassau Coliseum meeting between the teams.

"To call me crackhead when I only use crack on my off days and it's my business and a personal thing," he said.

Making the timing of his comeback a little suspect now with the timing of the book release.... to me at least.

He said in an interview last night that he didn't bring these allegations to light because he didn't want them to destroy his opportunity to continue his hockey career, so yeah... the timing is more than suspect.
