Title: New Member, Question : MPG
Description: 60-70 mpg is that false??
Justin78248 - May 30, 2008 04:47 PM (GMT)
I am stuck between the comfortable (I'm 6'4") GV650 and crotch rocket that get 50/60 mpg. One website boasts the Avitar getting 60-70 mpg. I am more willing to believe 50hwy/40city.
I asked on YahooAnswers and they said this forum was a great place for answers on Hyosungs. Thanks to all.
PS any cheap upgrade recommendations would be great IE like the rear suspension I saw someone post.

WELCOME !!
Thanks for joining the site !! :piwyr#1:
There will be a lot of members posting soon, but it IS the weekend 'down under' and at night so give them some time to see and respond with your answers.
Sorry as I have two Venoxes and not a Hyo so do not have the info.. could post what I've read but lets hear it from the actual owners...
icedog - May 30, 2008 05:25 PM (GMT)
Welcome Justin. ( :crap: crap I hate :furious: it when somebody moves a post while I'm typing up a response :pull: . The post fails and you have to cut and paste and start over :pull: :pull: :pull: end rant)
OK, to provide some answer... I decided it was too hard to choose so I bought both  -
my GV650 gets about 4.5 litres per 100km when ridden conservatively on the highway, worse if you are really having fun in the twisties or pushing hard on the open road  (convert that to whatever flavour of gallons are relavant to where you live and to miles for your mpg).
The GT250 gets about 3.5 litres/100km ridden the same way but at 6'4" I'm guessing you might be looking at a slightly larger capacity crotcher so...
I think it was FastEddie that recently upgraded the rears on his GV650 with maybe Icon(?) progressives. I'm watching that space myself.
Plenty of pipe options, the GFL bolt-on muffler is likely the cheapest you'll find in the 2-into-1 space. Larry Cook makes some very nice double pipes and also has a rejet kit to matchwhich gives even better performance all at a not unreasonable price. Personally I like the stock sound but would like to shed some of the weight and size - don't know of anything that fits these requirements (yet).
Windshields if you like them - you are clearly going to need a large one if it is to do anything - the largest sport-style is probably the Memphis Shades Big Shot which some members swear by. Then there is the more traditional tombstone style, Slipstreamer is recommended by some of our members, and then there is the CHiPs style full bar fairing screen which other recommend - this later is available at a reasonable price from Richard Jordan in Korea and ships worldwide in a matter of a very few days.
Richard Jordan also has the best looking hard cases for the GV650 in the matching colours - not that cheap but an excellent product according to those that have bought them.

Wow and thanks for all the replies. Much friendlier crowd here, than Yahoo. I think I will stay here. I live in USA. So it's mid afternoon for me. This is my first bike purchase. I haven't even ridden one, except staying in first gear (my sister is paticular about her Honda Shadow). But I am taking a bike class next weekend to teach me the ropes. I look foward to learning alot from ya'll. That 4.5L per 100 km was that about 55 or 70? I definately want a windshield. I will check out the brands recommended to me. I was concerned about some of the mechanical problems I've seen in forums, but it sounds like they have been solved. Does it take any special tools to change the oil myself, or can I rab a wrench and save some money?

As the GV650 was a brand new bike initially there were some things as happens will ALL new bikes... new ones seem to have ALL ''the bugs'' worked out.

Yes you can... but lets see a usa member or one of our dealers say if that would in any way affect the warrenty.
NOW be aware, very aware the GV650 puts out A LOT of HP for a new rider... :old:
PS the weekends are the slow times here.... :joscoffee:
Dave - May 30, 2008 09:50 PM (GMT)
The weekends may be slow but the die hards still hang around. Welcome to the Pride Justin, Icedog has covered the GV650 pretty well. I have had mine now for just over a year now and its been hassel free for just about the entire time (a couple of shock absorber bushes lost the plot, a very easy fix up job and Im looking at the Ikon shock absorber upgrade as well.) I think its the best bike that I have ever had so far and I still like to just look at her just because of its great design and looks. As far as the riding goes every trip is great as well, its responsive, it has power when you need it and its just fun to ride. For me its the perfect ride and as far as servicing goes its one of the easiest ones to do any work on, only the old BMW boxers are easier. Although it proberly would be best if you waited until the warranty period was over before you start servicing yourself, not because its hard to do (because its not) it just if there are any problems then its a hell of alot easier to rectify when it comes to any warranty claims, it just makes the process easier. Anyway welcome aboard mate. :evilgrin1:

Justin78248 - May 31, 2008 12:44 AM (GMT)
Hey Pops good to see ya. I'll start by saying my first lust for this bike was the curves. As I mentioned my height was an issue. This bike is the first and only that I have sat on, and dont feel like Sasquatch. The pedals on any V-Star, Volusia etc. were just too short. The power of the HP I will respect. I live in San Antonio, Texas. That's the most middle and shouthern US. It's mostly interstate driving and though the drivers are not the most wreckless, it is a necessity to hit and maintain 75mph (120km) in the length of an entrance ramp. There has been a huge burst in the MC community. Hopefully, this means more awareness of our existence.

OK, let me be a little more specific about "conservative" - I'm talking no (well few anyway  ) hard accelleration and speeds (generally) not exceeding 55 mph in light traffic with some hills - ie almost ideal real-world economy conditions. It might be possible to get a little better by actively riding for economy which I don't and will certainly be possible to get worse by wringing the throttle.
As a first bike I would not call any cruiser ideal due to their cumbersome low-speed manuverablility but if you just have to go the cruiser route from day one the GV650 is certainly a good choice and should accomodate your tall frame well.
I would think doing your own oil changes would complicate any warrenty claim should it be required.
Bike class is a r-e-a-l-l-y good idea if you are looking at your first bike if for no other reason than you get to play with someone elses bike before you start abusing your own  Of course the really good bit is all the widsom that is imparted.
Not only does the GV650 have quite a lot of torque but the engine just keeps reving (unlike most other cruisers) - getting up to freeway speed on your onramp will NOT be a problem :okthumb: just be sure you are hanging on when you roll the wrist down. :hahaha: :hahaha:
Homer - May 31, 2008 09:27 AM (GMT)
G'day and welcome to the pride!!! :WelcomeWave:
I have an '06 GV650 and have had a couple issues: radiator fan switch and then later the fan itself, as well as some corrosion issues that were also covered under warranty.
It is my first bike, and I love every minute of riding it. Sometimes I think that it would be nice to ride a bigger bike, then I just remind myself that as it is I have difficulty keeping my feet on the pegs and my hands on the bars!
Fuel economy wise, I used to get around 240kms on a tank. I get a bit less now that I rejet the carbs. And I NEVER ride sedately! If I am not riding 135kms/hr on the freeway, I am flying around the twisties!!!
icedog - May 31, 2008 09:49 AM (GMT)
a couple of new problems: -
had to disassemble my turn indicator switch today. Wasn't locking in on a right turn which was a bit dangerous. Cleaned all the parts, regreased with Vasolene and reassembled, now works like new.
Gearbox is a little cranky getting ino 2nd and 3rd at present, I adjusted the clutch up and lubed the cable which made it easier to find neutral but the shift to/from 2nd is sticky, the adjustment actually seemed to make it worse :crap: :pull: If I tighten the cable any more there will be no play at all.

PHOTOS
How about posting your bike photos in our on site Photobucket
PHOTO GALLERY ?
If there is not a sub album already there, go ahead and add one with as many sub albums as you wish. Tag the pics with as many tags as you want to help tell a story with the pic. , it will also be picked up when anyone searches photobucket for that tag. Great way to advertise your bike, the brand and PIWYR !
There are some ''how to'' topics and login links at the top there.
THEN request your own personal MEMBER GALLERY/FORUM and we can set up a topper slideshow where you can add more pics to it as you have them. We can then also add this link to each of your posts.

which will take everyone straight to your own personal MEMBER GALLERY/FORUM where YOU control the topics and whats in them. Its your own personal space.
To set the last one up you will also need to join the
PIWYRfeatures Forum to post in and to view your own personal forum.
