Title: Marvin is ready to Rock & Roll

serp - April 5, 2008 10:27 PM (GMT)
After 2 long days Marvin is ready for next month's road trip.
I did the oil/filter change.
I replaced the rear shock with a new OEM one, what a difference over the original, good damping and a stout spring.
I replaced the 150/70 rear tire with a Michelin Pilot Race H2 in a 150/60
I replaced the chain & sprockets going +1 on the front sprocket to conpensate for the lower profile rear tire, I now get 145 kph (90 mph) @ 10,000 rpm, perfect.
I installed a cut down side-stand to fit the lower suspension.
I replaced the front tire with a matching Michelin and brought the forks up in the tree a 1/4 inch to keep the bike level.
And I checked the valves, 1 was just out of specs on the tight side :crap:
The shop manual is less than useless in the 'out to' department, when I looked for what was to be lined up when I needed to re-install the cams all it says is "set timing" Oh give me screw & locknut adjustments anyday. I got it apart and when to my local Suzuki dealer for a shim, $5 later I was on my way home.
I got it back together but in the disasembly I broke the gasket to the chain tensionner, so I made one from some leftover gasket materiel. (I'm not waiting who knows how long to order another), all together I go for a test ride and my new gasket is leaking, I back off the adjuster and retorque the bolts and that seemed to take care of it, I'll have to keep an eye on it while I order a couple of the regular gasket.

But it's all done, now I just have to wait 4 weeks until launch date.

Sounds like you've been busy!

serp - April 6, 2008 10:51 AM (GMT)
Busier than a Frencheman in a whorehouse on nickle night.

Homer - April 6, 2008 11:00 AM (GMT)
The count down is on!

So how much of any improvement do you reckon you have over stock from all the changes you made?

serp - April 6, 2008 06:44 PM (GMT)
The gearing and tires cancel each other out so acceleration and top end remains the same but the lower center of gravity should give it a lighter feel through the piff-paffs.
I can't wait to get it up in the tigth mountain twisties and turn Marvin loose.

obxbiker - April 6, 2008 07:17 PM (GMT)
This will be :marvin:'s first ''BIG TEST''...right (?)

serp - April 6, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
Yes it will.

Zero hour approaches!!!!!!!!!!!!!

obxbiker - April 7, 2008 01:01 AM (GMT)
How looong and how faaar will the ''BIG TEST'' be ?

serp - April 7, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
A week to 10 days and 4,000 to 5,000 km.

obxbiker - April 7, 2008 02:47 AM (GMT)
Soooo that would be a '' BIG TEST'' for Marvin.. a ''small test'' for you..

gw555 - April 7, 2008 05:24 AM (GMT)
I took my YELLOW one on a 1550km ride over 2 days about 8 months ago and had no problems at all. Marvin will be fine.

serp - April 7, 2008 12:29 PM (GMT)
Oops, spoke too soon. I was thinking about installed an auxiliary light so I put the meter on the battery to check out the charging system and...only 12.9V max.
Now I know why the headlight brightness changes to the dimmer side when I ride at night.
Maybe I should rename Marvin,

"What is that?"
"It's a Hyosung GT250 lemon"

serp - April 7, 2008 02:44 PM (GMT)
The trip is in hold pending yet another repair, my magneto is weak, I should have 67 to 96 Vac and I have 55 Vac.

By the time my warranty is up the only original thing left will be the frame which will probably crack a short time later. :crap:

Nate - April 7, 2008 07:13 PM (GMT)
Well at least you'll know it's solid then :)

But you will have to repaint it then - please dont use Hyosung YELLOW

Not a chance, I'd want a color that won't brake down in sunlight so it would have to be Suzuki yellow.

Oh... you mean it should read higher than that :smack:

serp - April 8, 2008 11:25 AM (GMT)
:floorlaugh: OK, we'll go with that.

serp - April 8, 2008 04:27 PM (GMT)
I went to the dealer this morning and talked them out of the Stator from my original engine, they happened to have it off already since they had stripped down the engine for parts, tomorrow I'll swap it out.
Keeping my fingers crossed. :FELIX:

gw555 - April 8, 2008 11:33 PM (GMT)
good luck with the swap over

serp - April 9, 2008 04:05 PM (GMT)
Ok that didn't do it, I now have a regulator/rectifier on order, should be here in a week so Marvin is back in dry dock...again. :crap:

obxbiker - April 9, 2008 05:25 PM (GMT)
:bawl: :pull:

Nate - April 11, 2008 07:23 PM (GMT)
DRAT again! Well at least you have the bandit to keep you entertained...

gw555 - April 16, 2008 06:20 AM (GMT)
Hows Marvin, have you got the rectifier yet?

serp - April 22, 2008 09:27 PM (GMT)
the rectifier came in today and...that wasn't it. Turns out it's my battery, for some reason it's stuck at 12.3V. Under load it will go down to 12V but refuses to go up past 12.3V. I took it out and put it on a massive auto charger I have (10 to 40 amps with a 225 amp boost) and nothing above 12.3V.
I've been around a lot of batteries (I was a battery man at Sears for 2 years) but I've never seen one act this way.
It just so happens I had a new one for the Bandit and they're the same size, Besides the Suzuki battery is only 5 years old so there's plenty of life left in it.

serp - April 22, 2008 09:29 PM (GMT)
Now I have a minor oil leak from the cam chain tensioner that seems to only happen after it's been sitting for a couple of days, tomorrow I'll make a gasket for it.

gw555 - April 23, 2008 01:52 AM (GMT)
Seems a bit strange to leak after acouple of days???

serp - April 23, 2008 02:44 AM (GMT)
Even stranger that it's not leaking from the base but the upper part where the rubber plug is.

gw555 - April 23, 2008 02:57 AM (GMT)
Ahhh mine did that a while ago as well, when they reshimmed the valves, but after a couple of days (in my case around 200km) it stopped and hasnt had any sign since and that was about 18000km ago

serp - April 23, 2008 02:00 PM (GMT)
Well I made a gasket for it this morning and got it all back together, I have some errands to run so that will make a nice test drive then hopefully he's ready for road tripping.

gw555 - April 24, 2008 04:48 AM (GMT)
Is Marvin all raring to go??

serp - April 24, 2008 12:50 PM (GMT)
Yep, checked him this morning and...no leakage.

At long last Marvin IS ready, May 13th we launch.

gw555 - April 27, 2008 10:04 PM (GMT)
I just clocked 1100km in the last two days, but my rear shock has gone so it did make for a bit of bouncy riding

serp - April 28, 2008 02:10 AM (GMT)
You really know how to torture a guy.

Marvin is begin' for the open road but I must not give in to temptation.
2 weeks and 2 days 'til launch....
