Title: Thinkin' 'bout a GV250
Description: service question

Joe Bernard - March 14, 2008 03:58 AM (GMT)
Hi, this is my first post. I'm 46 and have been out of biking for 20 years. My wife and I are taking a safety course this weekend. We saw a GV250 parked next to a Honda Rebel and Suzuki GZ250 at a dealer that carries those three brands. The bike was much more impressive than the Japanese ones, and with a great sale price to boot. We're thinking of picking it up as "our" first bike, to eventually become hers when I buy a bigger bike later on. I have a question about service. The nearest dealer is 100 miles from our house. Considering the simplicity of the design and the fact that I change my own oil, do you see any reason why the services couldn't be handled between myself and an independent shop. It seems to me I would only need to get the bike to the dealer in the event of a warranty issue. Your thoughts?

Welcome :welcomespin: :WelcomeWave:

Whereabouts you, because waranty seems to be different in different countries

Wow, that was a quick response. It's 9:40 PM where I am, but judging from the live Formula One practice I just watched, some of you are reading this in the middle of the day! The dealer is in Marin County, CA. USA. I live in Lake County.

OK then we need a answer/opinion from some of the GV/GT riders/owners/dealers in the USA !

:old: :welcomespin: I ride a Venox and am not sure about your questions on warranty.

obxbiker - March 14, 2008 11:45 AM (GMT)
The question as I understand it is:
can the scheduled service be done at a local non HYO dealer and then would this affect any breakdown warranty issues when it would go back to the HYO dealer to be fixed.

You are correct sir. I'm going to try to get to the dealer today to chat about it - and, of course, walk around my pontential purchase several more times! I haven't owned a motorcycle in 20 years. It's hard to believe this red and silver beauty may be in my garage in a week.... assuming I don't drop the safety school's bike this weekend and get thrown out!

Its great to hear your are taking a refresher course after 20 yrs....and am not going to be one of those :

Well, my dealer conversation was inconclusive. I started a thread in General Discussion in hopes of finding a California Hyosung owner with a warranty book.

:WelcomeWave: G'day Joe, its good to hear that your getting back onto two wheels. The GV250 is a great bike and good luck with the servicing bit. :evilgrin1:

My dealer has told me that I could do a lot of my own work if I wanted to and it would not affect my warranty. I told him that I enjoy doing a lot of the stuff myself so I can learn more about my bike and he liked that idea. He has been very busy lately with other bike work and my bike tends to sit and wait. He said that he would rather I did it and enjoy the bike than for it to sit in his garage. Of course this doesn't include anything major. I think it is mainly up to the individual dealers. I don't know if they would all feel this way. I guess this really didn't help a whole lot.

My best advise would be to talk to your dealer.

I think you picked a great bike. Of course I'm partial to the GV250s, I own an '08 burgundy and cream. Super bikes, great power with lots of looks!!! :ok:

By the way, WeLcOmE!!! :welcomespin: :WelcomeWave:

Have a good one and ride safe. :D :biker1:

I sent off an e-mail to Hyosung and got a response right away from West Coast Regional Sales Mngr. Robert Noone. He says any shop licensed to work on motorcycles can service the bike, or I can do it myself and keep the receipts. I only need a Hyosung dealer for warranty repairs. I guess asking them first would have been a good idea, eh? :)

Making sure your warranty will be honoured can be a tricky thing to do. It will really come down to who your dealer is and whether or not he got some the night before! Hyosung rely on their dealer network to decide whether or not to accept a claim, and often if you regularly have your bike serviced at the dealer you would have warranty work done, he is more likely to be on your side should you need to make a claim.

Another point that is made in the service handbook, is that if it is deemed that an unqualified person completes work on your bike(this maybe you) then they can decline a claim. A member here, AmishCrackDealer can tell you a story where his speedo ceased working correctly. He took the bike to his dealer and the claim was rejected coz Amish had painted the bike! Luckily he was able to find another dealer that would honour the claim! Point is, is that you really need to have a good relationship with your dealer, and sometimes to have that you need to pay them to service your bike. Money talks.

I'm always having probs with my dealer coz he is just an arseh&le!

G'day Joe and welcome to the site. Must be something about the GV250 that appeals to blokes in their 40's. Like you, I'm in my 40's and hadn't ridden a bike on the road for some time, that was, until I bought my 07 GV250 last year. This model bike has a great deal of respect from many who ride. Mine has nearly 5000 kms on the clock now and pretty much hasn't missed a beat. Good luck with the safety course and the purchase of your new "piglet". Looking forward to seeing some pics.

Dragonryder - March 17, 2008 12:36 AM (GMT)
I think the bike has a big bike nostalgic look to it. It's just a cool bike :D :ok: :Nych'sLinksAreSafeToOpen:
