Title: GT250 - Marvin's report card

serp - February 21, 2008 08:13 PM (GMT)
I give Marvin a C- so far.
Out of 11 months of ownership the bike's been in the shop or waiting on parts for 4 months, right now I'm waiting on a new petcock since my current one started leaking.

Nate - February 21, 2008 09:49 PM (GMT)
Yikes that sucks. Warranty replacement?

serp - February 21, 2008 10:39 PM (GMT)
Yep, another warranty item.

Nate - February 21, 2008 10:51 PM (GMT)
Ah, i was going to say if not Richard can get it to you in a flash...

Yeah I don't see myself ever getting anything from Richard, he's a good guy with a good business and all but it just cost too much to get things here. I was going to upgrade to the twin disk until I found out it was going to cost me over $100 just to get it here.

Nate - February 22, 2008 04:18 AM (GMT)
The trick to ordering parts from Richard is stacking up a big order. I ordered the chin spoiler which shipped for $60. Added in a half dozen or so other items, shipping still $60.

The dual brake kit crossed my mind as well, but since i swapped to stainless lines and new pads I don't think I really need the kit. Brakes got 100X better.

geekonabike - February 23, 2008 06:22 PM (GMT)
Gotta wonder if it's just yours or is this evidence of the general level of quality. A chem prof asked me yesterday what I know about the model, so I thought I'd have another lookie here.

I'm assuming you still have your Bandit. It's for reasons like this that it pays to have at least two bikes. :moped: :moped:

Yeah I still have the Bandit, she just rolled over 70,000 miles (112,900 km), running like a new bike still and by the way, out of 4 years and 3 months of ownership she was never in the shop and down 4 days waiting on parts.

Nate - February 23, 2008 11:08 PM (GMT)
The Hyosung USA parts supply chain is certainly lacking so far. WOuld make a world of difference in your experience Serp if you could get parts quickly, I'd bet.

gw555 - February 24, 2008 11:29 PM (GMT)
Parts here in NZ are pretty hopeless as well, quicker to get them from Richard Jordan. Even some of the dealers here are recommending to buy direct from Richard apparently.

Only problem I have had was a clutch cable of which there were none in the country so they took one off a showroom bike for me.

Well let's see,
The engine dropped a valve, new engine.
The mirrors wouldn't adjust upward enough to look level, Suzuki mirrors installed.
The rear shock had no dampening at all, Kawasaki shock installed.
The horn was so feelble I couldn't hear it unless I was stopped, Honda horn installed.
The engine would cut out on hot days, new CDI module.
Brake pads wore out prematurely, new pads after a 1 month wait.
fuel petcock leaking, still waiting on one.

My chain is on it's last leg and I ordered sprockets for it 2 months ago but only 1 has come in so far.

geekonabike - February 25, 2008 01:33 AM (GMT)
Aside from all that all's fine though, right?

Here's hoping you get some satisfaction.

serp - February 25, 2008 02:57 AM (GMT)
I actually like the bike fine...when it's running. It's a good thing I have a backup to take up the slack. my real concern is, what about after the warranty runs out?

I can handle the downtime when there are no expenses associated with it.

gw555 - February 25, 2008 03:10 AM (GMT)
I have been lucky then because my two majors (cdi and rear shock) were replaced under warranty at 9900km (here we only have 10000km warranty) and I have never had any major since. I am now about to clock 60000km so.........??????

serp - February 25, 2008 04:11 AM (GMT)
QUOTE (gw555 @ Feb 25 2008, 09:10 AM)
here we only have 10000km warranty

Wow that sucks, here we have 2 years unlimited mileage.

Nate - February 25, 2008 12:08 PM (GMT)
Thats crazy! I've never heard of a mileage warranty on a bike

serp - February 25, 2008 02:42 PM (GMT)
Then again if you were to get a spare speedo and use that putting only 500 klicks on the original unit every year it would make for a very long warranty period.

Nate - February 25, 2008 04:50 PM (GMT)
Aha! I like the evil plan!!!

:)

gw555 - February 25, 2008 06:56 PM (GMT)
Ahhhh yes but the time limit is only 12 months so we get "screwed" both ways 10000k or 12 months which ever comes first so in my case I only had a 4month warranty because I was doing around 2500k per month then

gvcruiser - February 27, 2008 03:21 AM (GMT)
Nate you are not alone. I've had my piglet in a few times for warranty work. I lose 2 weeks each time. For some reason warranty parts take longer to get to the dealership than others. :pull:

Lunk - February 27, 2008 03:48 AM (GMT)
I'm sorry to hear you are having such a tough time getting parts serp. I've been fortunate when I've needed parts for my GV650. The longest wait I had was 2 weeks for a new tank to ship from Korea.

geekonabike - February 27, 2008 03:50 AM (GMT)
These are all reasons that it's imperative that everyone have at least two motorcycles. In fact three really should be the minimum, but I've been slogging along with two for a while now.

Please post that as a law, so that I may show it to my wife and then seek to be in full compliance... :rotfl:

geekonabike - February 27, 2008 04:35 AM (GMT)
I thought it was self-evident.

OK, it took some time to convince the wife-unit....and I'm still paying DEARLY for it. :modwoman:

3 sounds about right, my second bike went into dry-dock today. The lock washer that holds the counter-shaft sprocket in place stripped and it nearly came apart today. New washer ordered, wait time...3 days.
Well it's time for the pick-up to get some use.

gw555 - February 27, 2008 06:27 AM (GMT)
Maybe I should suggest this reasoning to my wife so I can get another bike, trouble is I have spent all the money on the house so I will probably end up :moped:

:old: One should always have a even ratio of motorcycles to wifes I prefer 3 to 0 leaning towards the motorcycles.

mmmmmmm..... might get away with two but methinks not three

another idea :woohoo: could get another wife then I could have four bikes  :woohoo:

serp - February 29, 2008 10:15 PM (GMT)
Well after 3 days the part came in for my Suzi, Marvin? stiiiiiillllll waiting. Going on 1 month now.

Nate - March 1, 2008 12:00 AM (GMT)
Not sure it will help or not Glenn but a few have gotten expedited parts after a call to David Laugs, the NE Hyo rep

David Laugs
(347) 446-6629

He posted his number over at ACD a while back. Pretty much answers his phone day or night. Couldn't hurt to give him a ring. Nice guy to talk to either way. Has a real passion for the Hyosung product line.

On an unrelated note, if anyone here hasn't hopped on to Serp's website, you don't know what your missing. SOme great ride reports and a good all around read. I can only dream of taking some of the rides you've taken...

obxbiker - March 1, 2008 01:04 AM (GMT)
Good idea to give David a call.
That # is in his sig here: PIWYR MEMBER : dj_laugs

Thanks Nate, I think I'll do that.

Little off topic Serp, but i saw on your site that you had a ZR-7 before. What did you think of that ride?

A couple of S models and the newer version the ZR750S have caught my eye recently...

A couple of S models and the newer version the ZR750S have caught my eye recently...

A great bike, not a lot of power but enough to play with, comfortable for all day travel and a 5.8 gal tank was good enough for 300 miles between stations.
Brakes were good but required some effort compared to some of the 2-finger do a stoppie systems out there now. Suspenssion was great right out of the box with enough adjustment for solo or 2-up riding, top speed around 135 mph from an engine ratted at 68 bhp/48 pounds-torque, sweet spot was 80 mph and could get 55 mpg if held to 65~70 mph.

I still miss mine.

Nate - March 2, 2008 01:11 AM (GMT)
Hmm your review certainly makes them even more interesting. Sounds like exactly what I'm looking for.

The newer 05/06 models got water cooling and fuel injection which claimed to bump power up to 100 RWHP, at least that's what i've read. Another interesting point about the 750, which may apply to the 700 (not sure), is that the engine case is merely a sleeved down z1000 unit. I read that EVERYTHING was simply transfered over, ignition timing, electric, air box, the works.

I suppose one could find a wrecked 1000 and swap out if they wanted more power...

Nate - March 2, 2008 11:31 PM (GMT)
Ok so now time for a comparison Serp.

ZR7 vs Bandit 1200 since you have had both.

Since the Bandit 1250 came out it seems the 1200's are hitting the used market at a much better price.

pops - March 3, 2008 01:38 AM (GMT)
:old: Pops wished he had bought a Bandit when he had a chance. :soapbox:

The Bandit 1200 is the ZR-7 with twice the engine and better brakes.
