Title: My new GV 250
Description: First experiences
Thilo - November 14, 2007 11:22 AM (GMT)
Hi,
I baught a new GV 250 in black with the optional slash cut pipes ( the cheaper ones offered as dealer fit ). I followed the advice in this forum and baught from Stafford in Heidelberg and not from Peter Stevens to get better service even though Peter Stevens included a center stand for the same price. Here my experiences/impressions so far:
- Stafford told me what I found online before too: Don't put a center stand on the Aquila, it will break the frame if somebody sits on it when on the center stand
- The pipes look great and she sounds really cool
- She leaked oil from the first day. Got fixed yesterday, a washer was not placecd correct when Hyosung assembled it.
- Adjusting the foot break lever was a big job because after taking the lever off, the whole thing fell apart. It took me 30 minutes to put everything together again. Next time I just pushed from the back of the assembly until the lever was on again and it only took a couple of minutes to change the position. I am still not happy and will ask at the next service to get it positioned somewhere between the two positions that I can get out of the lever adjustment.
- Adjusting the gear shifter lever worked fine.
- One of the mirrors was a bit loose and I found that there are some turns in the thread to get them high enough to see properly
- The tank already looks pretty ordinary just from wiping it clean. I think the paint is not hard enough.
- The gear box seems to work OK, but sometimes I can't change to neutral if stationary. I think this applies to all motorbike gear boxes.
- I had to buy leather pants because the wind really froze my nuts
- Leather stuff from 'leather stuff Australia' on Philip Island is the best priced around
- Helmets online from 'the helmet warehouse' are OK and cheap. You just have to try them on somewhere else first.
We both love our GV 250 and argue every night about who will ride tomorrow.

hahaha - you're killing me -
finding neutral will get easier as the engine gets broken in a little more.
paint can be changed or redone - or graphics can be added to make it less ordinary ;)
cant help with the frozen nuts or the leathers - sorry :P

The nuetral will be easier to locate after the clutch wears in some. Keep it adjusted properly to prevent 'drag'.
When you put it in 1st gear and the bike moves or sort of shakes it means your clutch may be a little out of adjustment.
Something else that eases the nuetral hunt is don't set for very long, like at a traffic light with the bike in gear, snick it to 'N' as you come to a stop. Then release the clutch, don't sit there with the lever pulled. Wet clutches don't like that.
Works for me.

Congrats on your new bike, I think you will enjoy it very much once you get the little stuff sorted out. Ride Safe

Its interesting to hear about the frame cracking issues if the bike has a centre stand fitted, I cant say that I have heard or seen that one before. Anyway if you have any problems Thilo make sure you take your bike back to the workshop and let the mechanics do the adjustments and repairs for you (thats what the warranty period is for). Even if you are unsure about various aspects of your bike and riding it, any real mechanic will take time out to answer any question you may have, but dont wait until the next service. I dont know about Victoria, but over here we are more than happy to fix any problem or answer any question at any time. It is a big investment when you buy a new bike and its important that the bike performs at its best. But we are all here to help you if you need it. :evilgrin1:

I always advise people to wax their paint as soon as you get a new bike, I use Turtle Wax then never wipe the paint when dry, use Mr Sheen to clean without water. Wiping off dirt will scratch most paints, the newer the paint the worse the scratches.
Congrats on the new ride.

G'day Thilo.
Nice choice of bike there. I have one just like it, minus the slash cut pipes.
Some interesting points you've made, some of which I can relate to.

I seriously hope that's not true, and I doubt that it is.

I had an oil filter cover leak from new. No big issue but even now after 2500 kms and a couple of "O" ring replacements it still seeps occasionally.

I think the expression I used was, "You only have to look at it and it scratches". They polish out quite easily.

Strangely enough I never had this problem from new but after about 1800 kms I noticed it with my bike. I figured I'll see how it goes and get it looked at if there's no improvement.

Welcome to the wonderful world of frozen nuts!
Enjoy your GV250. After owning mine for six months I never have regrets about buying this bike against the other 250 makes, and the feedback I get from other riders about how it looks is always positive. I reckon if they rode one, they'd probably buy one too!

Basically the Hyosung GV250 (piglet) is a great bike that has a lot of character and I dont think there is anything they cant do. They are brillant at commuting and once fitted with a screen and panniers they would be good as a tourer as well. The only other bike that can be compared with it is the Venox and unfortunately they are not available over here. It would be interesting to have a comparision report of the two together, I am still mystified by the centre stand bit though. :evilgrin1:

As I am a German I searched for problems with the Aquila in German forums. What I found there ( they all refer to the 125 cc version which is supposed to be the same bike with a smaller engine. On the photos it looks exactly like the 250 cc ) was that early models ( 2000 and earlier ) had problems with cracking frames just where the center stand is mounted ( they talk about 30% of all Aquila's ). They further write that it might be caused by sitting on the bike when on the center stand. This would explain why they don't fit the center stand any more.
When I then ordered my bike and discussed with Stafford about the center stand option, he convinced me not to get one because he had to fix an Aquila with a broken frame and he doesn't want to do that again.
So it seems to me that if there is no center stand, there won't be a problem either. Possibly it is sorted out or it only happened on pre 2001 models.

In my almost 15 years experience I have never heard that about the Center Stands cracking the frames on the GV's or any other Hyosung model (they all come standard with any model Hyosung in Korea - except the GV650 and dirt bikes of course). Would love to show the guys at Hyosung a picture of that if you can get one.
Could be that the average Korean might not weigh as much as the average person in Australia but still I have never heard that before. Interesting.
I did snap the frame on my GA125F once but I was using a street bike as a dirt bike and spent quite a bit of time in the air with that one.
Simply welded it back together with a steel rod on each side for added support and rode it for 3 more years! Fun times.

How many times does it take for the frame to crack?
My buddy has sat on it a few times doing the vrooom vroom bit, as have I.
I weigh in at about 300lbs and he weighs around 250lbs.
Many other friends an family have sat upon it as well.
So far the bike has not come down around the center stand.
I really don't think this is an issue with the GV250.
It is probably just one dealer sniping at another or making an excuse
for not having installed a center stand themselves.
patsparks - November 19, 2007 07:23 AM (GMT)
I really cant see the frame cracking. I'd still grab a centre stand from Richard just to use when you're servicing the bike or lubing the chain. If you think there is some truth in the cracking thing, don't sit on the bike on the stand.
cugles - November 19, 2007 10:20 AM (GMT)
I generally don't sit on the bike when it's sitting on the centre stand anyway but I couldn't imagine messing around trying to work on mine without it. Even a simple task of checking the oil level is made so much easier with the bike up on it's centre stand.
Dave - November 19, 2007 01:02 PM (GMT)
I only wish that I could have a centre stand, life would be so much easier. :evilgrin1:

Congrats, it's great to see another GV owner in Melbourne :)
Dragonryder - November 30, 2007 03:05 AM (GMT)
Hey Thilo, Great looking bike. I really like the black ones. I've had mine since July with no complaints. In fact, the more I ride it the more I love it. I have over 1500 km on her and she just gets better and better as the engine loosens up.
I have an easier time getting into neutral when I shift up to second gear and then shift down into neutral. I have been able to hit neutral since the beginning. Hope this helps with the neutral problem. It is true, it will loosen up as you ride it more. I like the bike a whole lot better since it has loosened up. It goes much faster and smoother. :biker1:
Congrats on a great looking bike. :ok:
Have a good one and ride safe. :D :biker1:
Thilo - November 30, 2007 11:09 AM (GMT)
I have clocked up 1200km so far. Really like riding her. I get lots of compliments for the good look of the bike.
Have my first service next Monay. I will complain about a bit of a rattle between 4500 and 5500 RPM. Sounds like a loose bolt. Hope they will check all bolts and nuts. Apart from that She has a bit of a lag at 5900 RPM from time to time. She just stops accelerating for a while even if I open the throttle more. I have to dig up the thread here in the forum where something similar is described. I thaught they fixed it in the newer bikes.
Can't complain about the power of the bike. It is not a rocket, but for my little experince of riding it is plenty. Engough to get away from the traffic and have lots of fun.
:D
Thilo - December 4, 2007 10:47 AM (GMT)
Hi again,
picked it up from the first service. They say they fixed the dead spot at 5900 RPM. A setting to reduce noise emmisions for overseas regulations they said. They changed a wire in ( or to ? don't know excatly ) the CDI unit ( whatever this is ) and it should be gone. They change lots of GT's over, but I was the first GV rider to complain about it.
I found this. This sounds like what Stafford did to mine:
CDI issueI only noticed it 4 or 5 times. Definetely once with a warm engine. Time will show if it is really gone.
Cheers
Thilo

Hey Thilo, glad to hear that you are enjoying your new bike. I like the black ones, I guess I like all the colors. The bike just looks good in any color. Sounds like you're having good enough weather to ride in. We just got pounded by 12-15 inches of snow and possibly more before it is done. I guess it gives us snow bound guys something to look forward to. Hope they fixed your bike. Keep us updated.
Have a good one and ride safe. :D :biker1:

Hey Thilo, how's your GV going?
Any more issues with the hesitation? Hopefully the CDI replacement fixed it. :okthumb:
Have you thought about fitting the "Performance Kit" made for the GV250's on your bike yet.
An increase of approx 4hp.
I have the kit but I am waiting till my bike is out of warranty. Have read lots of good reports from those who have fitted the kit
Check out LCCycle in the "In the Biz" board. Member Larry Cook.
