Title: Do you want more noise from your GV250?
Description: How to remove the silencers from a GV250

patsparks - June 2, 2006 04:12 AM (GMT)
It may not be legal where you live but it may be, how would I know? It is possible to easily increase the noise from the exhaust of a GV250 and all you need is an electric drill, 3/16" or 4.5mm drill bit and a pair of pliers.

I'm posting this here for 2 reasons,
1/ No one who lives near me has a GV250
2/ If I don't some one else will.

To make more noise with your GV250 have a look at the fun pages of the web site of the best Hyosung parts man in the known universe, Richard Jordan There are good pictures and a written rundown on how to do it all I ask is you don't ride at full throttle up my street. Richard has said to use a 3/8 drill bit but I think it should be 3/16. Try 3/16 first you can always go bigger.

Something to ponder, did you ever laugh at the kid with the loud exhaust on a car with little power? The GV250 goes well for a 250 or even a 400 but if it makes more noise it just sounds like you are working it harder. Remember cruisers are about effortless power.

Two last sugestions, if you do this conversion keep the silencers incase Mr Plod (police) takes a dislike to the noise then you can rivet the silencer back in. Also I think it would look better if you put some rivets back in the holes after you remove the silencers.

Enjoy

You can see I have done my upmost to sell this modification as I feel it is very worthwhile for all mature and sensible riders of the GV250 in any of it's forms due to there being absolutely no benefit from this modification.

I'm personally not going to do it to mine, but it is an interesting read...

And I thought your full face helmet was somewhat sensitive to the noises of life as a motorcycle helmet

I love the sound of my Gv250 with the silencers out. I really like the popping sound when downshifting. Others have posted that they don't like it and it's not good and stuff... But after 5 years and 42,000 kms my little parts hauler is going strong with no adjustments needed.

As far as the noise I don't really notice it due to my MP3 player going at full blast. I know people are going to have a lot to say about that but that's what I like and after a few years in Korea you'd want to blank it out sometimes too!

I would never recommend listening to music, by the way, but at the age of 40 I have realized that there are very few things in life I can do really well but driving bikes is one. Needless to say while driving in Korea (accident hot spot in the world) you have to drive like a computer, constantly updating every 2 seconds where everything is and where it will probably be in a second or 2. It also helps to be psychic.

* The Tragically Hip (older stuff) good for the bike.

I'm very interested in getting a better sound out of my GV250 but I've heard removing the silencers makes it too loud. So early morning starts next to the neightbors window might be a little annoying for them and I wouldn't want to do that.

So I thought a good solution might be to remove one of the silencers, but was wondering if this would cause any problems. Would be interested to hear what people think?

patsparks - August 10, 2006 11:42 AM (GMT)
Theo, pull the 2 out and see what it's like. If you have a pop rivet gun you can rivet the silencers back in easy enough if you think it's too loud. I think with 1 silencer it will be very near as loud as both out.

Life can be tough when you have neighbours.

tkaragiris - August 10, 2006 11:46 AM (GMT)
Yes, I think I'll give it a go on the weekend.

Sorry! Missed it the first time around!

This is Mr Plod, who was a character from Noddy.

Another idea is to remove the rivets and put the silencers back with screws. That way you could easily remove and replace them.

Get rivnuts installed in the muffler body then you will have a machined thread to screw into. I know commercial refrigeration installers use them. they can be intalled by pushing them into the hole with a long bolt nut and washer screwed into the rivnut then hold the head of the bolt while you tighten the nut againts the washer against the top of the rivnut until it goes tight. loosen the nut, remove the bolt and your left with a machined thread in the back of the muffler. If you grease the thread and the washer it will be easier. :2c:

Mr Plod is Toy Town's policeman, famous for catching the goblins Sly and Gobbo when they have been making mischief in Toyland.
Mr Plod ensures Noddy's taxi keeps within the speed limit and tries to keep all the Toys out of mischief.

He catches the mischief-makers on his police bicycle, by blowing his whistle and shouting "Halt, in the name of Plod!" before locking the culprits up in his jail.

Never heard of rivnuts before but they sound like a great idea. Where can you get them from?

patsparks - August 11, 2006 11:51 PM (GMT)
Theo try Universal or I think they may be Coventry Fasteners on Grand Junction Road Churchill Road or very near there. A quick ring around fastener retailers should get you there. An alternative is Sims Refrigeration at Pooraka just before Diagonal Road on the left going north. Not sure if they will sell you half a dozen but I know they use them, I used to see them in their vans when I serviced them.

Good luck with it. If and when you remove the baffles can we have a report of sound volume and quality from a South Aussie perspective please?

Well, finally got motivated to remove those silencers from the GV250. Got a visit from the wife's uncle who rides a Hardly Drivable Fatster, nice bike. I just couldn't get that thumpy noise out of my head. Got me to thinking my cruiser experience just isn't complete without that sound.

Was a beutiful day here in ol Adelaide today, so earlier in the day I whent for a cruise with my mate Tim up to Norton Summit pub (great ride with greater views on the way down). I really kicked myself for not removing the silencers so I could experience the noise on that ride it would have been fantastic, but I tell you what as soon as I got home out came the drill and out with suckers.

Was a bit worried that it would be too loud but after my test ride my mind is at ease, it is louder but not too loud, the sound is just right. Really makes a difference when your cruising along as you can always hear the bike, makes a really nice sound when you go down in the gears. Still doesn't give the bike that big bore sound but for a 250 it pretty sweet!

I really know now why they say red cars go faster, I rekon louder bikes do too.

Only use a claw hammer to remove the baffles from a VenoX Pops.

:old: There is the problem I am in the middle between the wrong coast and right coast and just slide mine back. As a matter of fact I do not even own a claw hammer.
