Title: Report from Taiwan: Engines and Jets
Description: 'nice people at Kymco in Taiwan '

geekonabike - June 5, 2007 07:50 AM (GMT)
The wife-unit had a nice, Mandarin-language conversation with some nice people at Kymco in Taiwan over the phone. Here's the gist of it:

1. They seemed to deny an 800cc motor is in the works.

2. There is a 700cc motor, for a scooter. (Pops can confirm I think.)

3. They strongly suggested I not buy a new motor out here, because apparently there are a lot of tweaks for particular markets, and it wasn't likely to just bolt in and work. "A lot of frustration" to get it to work right was the translation. Seems I won't be getting one here. They were curious how it croaked, and Joy eventually said we bought it used, and he said, "yeah, if someone opened it and messed with it it could blow it, but if they don't they don't really break." And mentioned they never sold one. Joy didn't mention it was her HUSBAND who screwed it up!

4. On fuel injection: ready to be marketed, 1-2hp jump. "I'm going to disappoint your husband, but the fuel injection will only give one or two more HP." I said one or two may be significant in such a low-output engine (by US standards) and I guess he laughed a bit. He said something about wanting to tune more for torque than max power, and the wife said something like, "Oh, like the Harleys," and he laughed again and said no they're not trying to compete there, but make them practical. Neat conversation I wish I could understand first-hand. Joy feels corrupted since she really doesn't care, but somehow remembers me talking about torque vs power a few too many times.

5. On jets (for Pops), they gave us some shops to call, and they all said if you bought jets for the Venox they're only in one size, but you can buy generic jets in any size. Not sure what that means. Pops, want me to follow up some more? Maybe ask if they'll sell me jets that will for sure fit? Kymco itself only sells the one size.

I think that's it. Thanks to George for getting me the number I couldn't seem to get out here! You da MAN!

:old: Thanks for the info Mike and any thing you can find out about the jets would be helpful. Wear pants with big really big deep pockets when you tour the plant. And yes I think the 700 will be a scooter or and a four wheeler. I am coming to the conclusion that the Venox is a red headed stepchild to them to get their foot in the dooor. Remember real deep pockets. Also for me anything I might want doesnt have to be a object or motorcyce part . THere are other th ings in this world such as.............lets see.................Women yes that was it I knew there was something. Good luck and enjoy.

geekonabike - June 8, 2007 10:37 AM (GMT)
Hi Guys,

Man that was a whirlwind tour. They have three plants in Kaohsiung right next each other. I got to see the two floors of one plant, with production for the domestic market downstairs where that day they were putting together some 100cc scooter for Taiwan, and then the top floor for exports. I think the scooter they were turning out might have been these:

http://www.allproducts.com/manufacture9/kymco/kb100.html

It was really cool. The engine plant was elsewhere, but seeing the end and working your way back to more and more skeletal scooters was neat. They do their own metal parts and larger plastic pieces right there. I got to see the welding stations, the robots in action, the testing station, the rows and rows of scooters ready to go, etc. I don't know if my jaw ever fully closed. At some point near the metal works parts I saw a tank, and told the guy it looked familiar, and he said yes that's your tank. It was unpainted, and had that "extra" thing on the right side of center top, and I said mine didn't have it, and he said it's for the fuel injection. More on that later.

On the top floor, right there were the Venoxes in final assembly. There were also some rows of scooters and some cool 125cc sportbikes. When I get a chance to hook up the camera I'll shoot you guys a pic. Of course I couldn't take pics of the assembly lines, but the finished products all lined up, somewhat taped over for shipping, was OK. Their goal for the day was a little over 1000 units.

The plant used all three dimensions beautifully. I got to learn a little about their plans, and some of their history. I did mention to the guide (who was probably a little bored giving these tours but quite nice and professional) that the 125cc sportbike would be welcome in my garage, but he didn't think it would do well in the US. I told him that students can ride at 14 yrs in many states, and he was surprised. (I'm sure someone in the company knows this.) I also argued that many parents might be interested in letting Junior ride a 125cc Kymco sportbike instead of a 250cc Ninja deathmachine, but he seemed still skeptical. That the Chinese are selling them in the US, but nobody trusts them, didn't impress him either. Too bad.

The fuel injection, I'm told, is just awaiting EPA testing. Well, earlier someone else had said marketing, but the only marketing I've seen Kymco do is by dealers and some motorcycle mag ads. I mentioned previously we should only expect a slight 1-2hp improvement in power when it arrives. If it's there for '08 I may buy a brand new Venox!

On the company: My wife's friend's husband is a prof at a university in the city, and a former student had contacts at KYmco and so that's how I got the opportunity. This prof told me that Kymco does not borrow money to expand, but uses its own money for that purpose. The plants are in what has become an expensive part of town, so they are small, but very efficient. The lowest paid assembly worker makes about NT$40,000 per month, which is about US$1200. But, they are very loyal, very rarely fired, and promoted very fairly, so it's a very solid company from the labor end. They have other plants, even around the world. My guide said they manufacture to order, i.e., make the machines when they've already been spoken for by the dealerships. (Not sold to customers, mind you, but requested by dealers.)

My tour was probably less than 30min, and that was fair because it's not like I'm going to do huge business. I was disappointed he didn't really want my opinion on anything. I would have been happy to relay much of what I learned here. I did get a red Kymco baseball cap out of it!

On the jets, he gave me the name of the technical guy in the US. He knew Mr. Ramsey (IIRC), as the head of sales or whatever, and gave me another name I wrote down, but didn't take with me to this computer. Sorry. I'll be home around 6/14 so I'll report more completely then, or possibly earlier. I also got an email address for some communication with Kymco Taiwan I'll send along, unless I get the vibe it's not for general publication. Hmmm....might want to check on that.

I'm sure I'm forgetting something. Like I said, I'll report back later.

Until then, FIND ME AN ENGINE!!!

I mean, take care,

Mike :Ninja:

any idea on price????

a non-working unit would be fine as I am really looking to build soem parts rather than more exhausts. I want to see if some Honda rims will swap out, want to fab up some crashbars, lightbars, sissybars, seats, and fenders.... it dont have to run for any of that ;)

I can pick it up too - no need to worry about shipping - just let me know what you want out of it...

That sounds like a whale of a trip, Mike! Too bad you couldn't throw a Venox engine into your carryon! I've been looking around and I think a Magna VF750, aka V45 will drop into the Venox frame, ie, If you don't mind four mufflers...

Just sorry to hear about the fate of the old Venox. We can still ride...

Sorry, I got my Amish and Obx's mixed up a little. I'm often in a hurry when typing on a borrowed computer with my kids threatening to destroy a place. Induces much cerebral flatulence.

Make me an offer. Really. Or a range, based on what you expect for its condition. It can be further adjusted when you arrive. Unless I find an engine and soon I'm looking to clean out my garage a little. I did very much enjoy the couple hundred miles I rode it!

We'll talk when I get back!

I'm going to try to email someone pics, since I don't know how to post them from here. The camera did a lousy job, and someday we'll fix the date on it.

The 125cc-class sportbikes I saw were probably Quannons. Just MAYBE they'll come to a shop near you. http://www.kymco.com/us/showroom/motorcycl...p?intInfoID=102

I personally think it would be a hoot to buzz around town on one of those. The Chinese have a few over here, but it will be another decade before I trust any of their stuff. YMMV.

Ha Ha Ha!!!!! Yeah, I hit a pretty big speed bump on my journey to mechanical guruness. Thanks for posting the pics. They are not exciting. I couldn't take pics of the assembly line. I almost took a pic of the huge lot full of scooters ready to go for the domestic market, but it was raining like crazy. Not that the scooters couldn't take it (or they'd be unfit for THIS market here in Taiwan), but I was pretty beat.

Speaking of which, it's nearly time for bed out here. Better get kids ready.

Thanks again George.

I'm thinking about $500, if that sounds OK to you. If I didn't have spousal approval to invest in a new VStrom (650, maybe even ABS) I'd really consider paying you to put that VLX motor in there and then keep the thing. But I want to be down to two bikes, which also means my 1992 CB750 Nighthawk, with 3-piece GIVI's, will go on the block. I always wanted one, but now I've been there, done that. I never expected to keep it long. $2K if anyone's interested in it. Can be seen in lower right of the page http://www.ninja250.org/geekonabike

geekonabike - June 17, 2007 05:23 AM (GMT)
Hi guys,

Good to be back in the USofA.

Just a few notes:

1. Dave, send me a line if you still want what's left of my 'nox.
2. I found out later the reason the photos were so bad: someone had set the camera to "close-up" mode, like when you want that nice ladybug picture. Sorry. Second lesson learned (right after "don't remove Venox cams if you haven't even graduated to shadetree").
3. The Chinese under the Kymco banner says something like, "If you're going to do it, do it the best." I guess it sounds more rousing in Chinese, but you get the idea.

I thought I was over my jetlag when I got up at 8am Saturday morning, but then I slept 6pm to 11pm later Saturday. Gotta work a full day Monday, so I'd better get over it soon. It's OK that I'm up and ready to go now (12:20am Sunday) since I have a lot of prepwork to do for Monday. Meantime I went to a new Suzi dealer and asked what they'd want for the '07 DL650 VStrom on the floor. Since I was there (and helped chat up customers who were waiting for them to finish paperwork for other sales, maybe) he offered it to me "at cost" roughly, or $6K (on a $6699 bike), so that may be my next ride. I figure a couple years down the road I may have a fuel-injected Venox (maybe sell the EX250 Ninja when it's a little older), and my new 'Strom, wife-willing. You know I won't do much of my own maintenance on it.

See y'all 'round,
Mike :Ninja:

geekonabike - June 18, 2007 03:49 AM (GMT)
Thanks guys. My email didn't register the replies or I'd have replied sooner.

Obx: thanks!

Pat: Man you're right. I thought I was over my jet-lag when I got up at 8am Saturday morning, but then went to sleep again 6pm to midnight, did some work, and slept again 4am-8am. I've been fighting it all day today (Sunday) but gave myself a 45min nap anyhow. I have to get back to work tomorrow. Cool photos of your odyssey; too bad I didn't know how to use a camera better!

Pops: I'm thinking it's time for a road trip your ways. I got a cool red Kymco hat at the factory. Do you have one? Do you want mine? It's barely used, and I do occasionaly use shampoo.

Oh, and I found out nobody in Taiwan outside of Kymco seems to know what "Kymco" is, even though it's stamped on a lot of the scooters and motorcycles (in English). But if you say Kwang Yang you're fine, and they know immediately. This is even true of those who are fluent in English.

That's about all the useless information I can think of to pass on at the moment, about Taiwan anyhow.

Catch you all around!

--Mike

PS: And happy fathers day!

Well it's about the same either way for me, since Taiwan is (counting days) 13hrs ahead of Oklahoma, except that it's easier to slouch at home I guess.

Sucks about the job interview. I had a phone interview once, after teaching a couple classes. The fellow on the other end asked why I was writing a calculus book, and I said something about it being time for me to make my own light saber. :loser: I never heard back.

Pops I hope you do make it out here! It's just me. The place is a pit, but not crowded!

Uk is 8.5 or 10.5 hours different to here so day is night and night is day. Going there I guess I didn't have to think too much and there was no tight schedules but when I came back I was back to work in 2 days and the interview was on day 4. They asked why I wanted the job right before the end of the interview. It was a suplimentary question that wasn't on their sheets, it was right off the cuff. I had the job I think until this last question. The job was an ocupational health and safety inspector. I said OHS wasn't my life or the air I breathe but I saw the job as a way to elevate my career. As I walked out I knew I blew it. What I mean't to say was I was concerned for people's welfare in the workplace and I wanted to help save lives. I understood the pressure some employees are under to produce with no regard to their own or their workmates safety. It wasn't the paper trail that concerned me but real safety. It just came out all wrong.

No, not until now. Kim was wondering what the heck I was listening to as I played it 3 times to get a better look at all the bikes. I liked the orange nox. One day I hope tol have mine orange.

They need to throw obnoxious in there. It has to be the most extreme.
