Title: Attempting to build a magazine bike
Description: in 5 months - out of a Venox!

So the bikes owner and I were discussing what modifications he wanted and what the overall look was going to be. Its a 2004 Kymco Venox, black, and has been ridden hard.

We are also using this bike to base soem new designs for production parts, so while we have it at our shop - we both decided it would be a good time for a makeover.

The owner wants an old school chopper/bobber look. Satin black paint, solo seat, etc. I thought this might be the bike to build to satisfy a goal I've had for a few years now. I want to build a bike that would be featured in The Horse Backstreet Choppers Magazine. I love this magazine and I am a personal fan of the Old School/Rat Bike look. I discussed thsi with the bike owner and we agreed that the magazine would be our target goal. So we have a list of things to do to the bike. Some radical, some subtle, all very trick and very cool.

We only have 5 months to do it all in as well, in addition to our other responsibilities, assignments, projects, and orders. I will personally be heading the build team on this project, so wish us luck. I intend to use this thread to post updates over the next few weeks and months so we can all see how it is built. The final unveiling will be at the owner's place in April. The plan would be to either submit the photos and the write-up at the reveal or hopefully - if time permits - have the magazine article as part of the reveal.

Stay tuned...

Would also be a cool thing for us personally. You could own a magazine bike and I could be the one to have built a magazine bike... the honor alone is worth the challenge.

I already started disassembly... hahahah couldnt wait.

Y2J - December 13, 2006 02:10 AM (GMT)
Awesome stuff! I can't wait to see it in print!

Just finished deconstruction this evening. I will take a picture of it tomorrow in the daylight. I havent started chopping yet... holding off til the pictures can be taken.

Picked up teh new issue of The Horse Backstreet Chopppers today too - just to get the juices flowing in the right direction. Its great - I have a picture of it as I intend for it to look - in my head - I'm just buildign towards that goal now...

wait till you see the pile of parts I removed already. I'm thinking only the tank will be re-used.... and that may change too.... hahahah

Hope you dont scare easy George!!! -

Unless you've seen it different then when you were here and this is just a thought but I thought it might be good to keep for two reasons:

1. If it looks good with-out the chrome under tank pieces then that would be a mod that others could do.(with just a little triming where the chrome attaches)

2. Keeping the tank keeps a little of the "HERITAGE" of the venox looks...

But this is your choice !!! :ok:

AmishCrackDealer - December 17, 2006 04:40 AM (GMT)
I know what you mean - the tank will be about the only recognizable part of the Venox when its done... maybe we should keep it- it would certainly be acceptable with the design...

:)

obxbiker - December 17, 2006 04:52 AM (GMT)
If YOU want to keep it thats GREAT...
If you don't thats
OK too....

AmishCrackDealer - December 17, 2006 01:58 PM (GMT)
Nah - its staying... ;)

AmishCrackDealer - December 18, 2006 02:46 PM (GMT)
hehehe - I haven't even told you that I already chopped up the stock mufflers, pegs, and re-routed the wiring. I have since built new pegs, removed the shocks and am in the process of building solid struts which will lower it about 3 inches and turn it into a rigid frame. BWHAHahahahah.....

George....?

You still there......???

hahahaha :P

well - it may be quicker than you think

I have it stripped down - disassembled - started sanding on the gas tank (yes - I removed the flame decals) I am drawing up the graphics now. I am headed to the store so I can get some parts to make pipes and rear fender, and new pegs, etc... sissybar...

I have my order ready to be placed so it wont take real long once the parts roll in... providing no serious issues - we might be looking at February - time frame... heheheh

I am going to write an introduction letter to the magazine - show them what we're starting with, explain its for a former marine, and that we are planning to complete it and send in information for a complete article... that way it might get on their minds and they'll look for it around March when I contact them again.

I'm thinking when its all done - I will also snap some shots of the GV behind it - with the shop name on it...

Wait and see what happens when you start removing the superfluous metal from the frame Dave!

AmishCrackDealer - December 22, 2006 04:00 PM (GMT)
yeah - thats partly the reason I wont send any more pics yet. I am working on that part this weekend as a matter of fact. I am building new pegs, replacing the rear springs with solid struts, chopping the rear frame section off completely, and adding fork extensions (when they get finished). I am also planning on having some new exhaust templates and a total one-off exhaust system for this bike. One one like it in the world! hehehehe... in a good way

But so George doesnt freak out - no more pics til its done now... bwhahahah....

obxbiker - December 22, 2006 06:56 PM (GMT)
As much as I would like to see my first venox's transfermation as it happens it would be best to wait until the "grand unveiling"

...but you are taking the "growing up" photo's as it happens for the absent Dad ???

AmishCrackDealer - December 22, 2006 07:20 PM (GMT)
Oh yeah - I even have a nice little picture album started :)

AmishCrackDealer - December 25, 2006 03:29 AM (GMT)
Well - since George emailed me and said he was ok with the progress pics... I thought yall might like to see....

This was yesterday. Today I made some struts that will stabilize the swingarm and make the bike a rigid frame chopper. It also lowers the bike about 2 - 3 inches. I also finished fabbing up some pegs mounts and an exhaust template. If the template works like it should - the old Venox will soon have a killer set of pipes. I am waiting on the chopper pipes until I make sure the template fits correctly. I also removed teh handlebars and started fabbing up some custom risers.

This bike is going to be a totally wicked hot rod! I get more an more excited about it every day.

REPEAT.....

AmishCrackDealer - December 25, 2006 06:02 PM (GMT)
Well - I couldnt help working on the Venox today... its calling me - hahahaha

I finished fabbing up the flat top rear fender - very nice too - lemme tell ya. I can see the whole thing coming together.... just cant seem to work fast enough - :P

I relocated the horn - and............ fabbed up a scoop-style chin spoiler!

The chin spoiler wont be for this bike, wont fit with the style. But I know there was some request for one so I thought I'd play around a little - see what I could come up with. This one is notched for the front pipe - and its made of metal (galvanized steel right now - will likely be made out of plain sheet metal if it gets put into production. - maybe chromed??? With it being so close to an exposed exhaust pipe - it cant be made of fiberglass (would quickly melt or catch fire - niether is good) and even made of metal - I question if the paint would stick with the heat from the front pipe. So I am thinking a metal chin spoiler with a chrome finish or possible a black powdercoating... it would go well with any color Venox...

I have to make the mounting holes, but it will be very vey cool. I will take pictures once its mounted and primered.

hehe - well - back to the grindstone :)

AmishCrackDealer - December 25, 2006 10:08 PM (GMT)
ok - the pegs are done now and so is the exhaust design. The rear fender is only waiting for the tall sissybar at this point - then it soff to paint. ("off to paint" only means into another room to be painted - I dont actually send it off anywhere.. :P )

I went ahead and removed the crashbars for now. Not sure about them yet - will wait and see when the bike gets closer to completion.

The rear frame and swingarm are welded and secured - everything is moving right along...

I'm self-taught - so hopefully it will be easier for her to learn :)
