Title: Melody

My mane flew in the wind, dirt flying behind me, as I cantered through the Serenity Stream. Such a beautiful place it was to look at while you wait for the perfect stallion to come and find you. I came to a halt and looked around the land, as if to see how many mares were also here looking. Not many.

My name was Melody, and I was not even a mare yet. I was still only 3 years old; a filly. I was looking for a stallion to bring me to his herd. I was going to turn into a mare soon. Then I could start my own family, which was my dream sense I was a young foal. I always wanted my own foal. Now, all I could do was wait.

I trotted through the grassy field, banner and cranium held high in my newfound pride. I was a stallion now, and any stallion needs some mares in his herd. I paused and sniffed the air, smoky nares widening to take in the scents of trampled grass, fresh water. And another equine. I snorted in glee and loped in the direction of the smell.

I continued on until I could see the mahogany hue of the fae before me. I slowed to an extended trot to come closer, then stopped completely a few feet from her. "Excuse me," I said. "I hope I'm not interrupting anything. I am Poseidon, King of the Aurora Mountains. May I have the pleasure of learning your name?" I looked her over with blue-green occuli as I waited for her response to my question.

I turned my cranium to look at the stag, my warm brown eyes surveying him. "I am known as Melody, Poseidon," I said. "Nice to meet you." I shook my head to get my long forelock out of the way, so I could see better. I watched the stag, waiting to hear what he would say.

I pricked my thorns at her sweet reply. Her way of speaking fit my observations—pretty and kind, but not English-like, with phrases like “I did not” and “I am going.” You know, a more modern way to talk. ”Beautiful name, Melody,” I replied. ”Where do you come from?”

I watched the stallion and nickered. "I come from nowhere," I said. "I've always just been a wanderer looking for somewhere to live." I snorted and looked at the stag. "What is your place like?" I said. "The Aurora Mountains." I wondered on what his land was like, for I always liked to know about the land which I was going to.

"Let's see......Where to stat, where to start?" I thought for a moment. "Oh, yes. It's not like normal mountains, where you'd expect lots of snow and ice. No, in my mountains it's mainly rocks, with a cave around the middle of it for us to take shelter in. Vegetation is around the base of the mountains, and there are few rainstorms and such. For those not used to it, like our enemies, it's difficult to live in. However, once you've lived there for a while, it's quite delightful. It connects to the Avalon Plains, so we can have an ally in case of battle." I stopped and took a breath, slightly winded from my speech. Funny how you can run for a while and not get tired, but when it comes to talking you run out of breath pretty fast.

I though about it for a moment. "It sounds like I would like it," I said. "But you never know what it is really like till you've seen it." I thought about it. About living in the mountains. It sounded nice.

I took a breath. "It is a very nice place," I said. "And you can come experience it, if you go with me. I'll give you a good home." I knew that was kind of lame, but it got the point across. I didn't mind that she was a filly. She'd be a mare soon, ready to have her own foal. We'd all been young once. I didn't care.

I smiled as the stallion asked me to go with him to his lands. That was what I wanted....a real home. "Sure," I said to Poseidon. "Lead the way." I couldn't wait to become 4 years of age, a mare, and have my own foal. Who knows, I might have a foal one day. I just can't wait for that wonderful day.
