According to several reports, Kinowelt is still planning to release the newly remastered version of Terminator 2, called the Ultimate Edition, on HD-DVD. This release will not only have remastered video but also remastered audio, DTS-HD 7.1 surround to be exact, and over 4 hours of bonus materials, not to mention hdi technology.
I've already bought the previous/French version, which used the same master as the blu-ray version, however, since hd-dvd codecs were more mature than blu-ray at the time, the HD-DVD was a lot better quality. Even then, the hd-dvd master was not perfect. I do recall a few places where there were some blur spots, etc. Hopefully, they've fixed those spots and maybe made the video a little more brilliant, but no one will really know until it's released and they can compare the two.
The remastered sound could also be what makes this hd-dvd release reference quality. If you've kept up with my hd-dvd topics, you'll know that one thing that I really didn't like about HD-DVD is that they have not put out a lot of 7.1 material, even though there were many 6.1 dvds released and at least a few 6.1 laserdiscs (for example, star wars phantom menace in 1999, Japan) made.
The release date for T-2 ultimate edition hd-dvd is suppose to be March 20th, less than a month from now, in Germany. Amazon is suppose to be taking pre-orders for it, and xploited cinema will probably be carrying it a few weeks afterwards. The US price would probably be around $40-$45. Now, a lot of things could happen between now and then, especially with the hd wars being over, but I really do hope that this does get released. If so, HD-DVD would go out with a huge bang.
