Until now, all of the fans of Pan's Labyrinth that have wanted the HD-DVD version had to order one of the HD-DVD import versions. On December 26th, 2007, however, Pan's Labyrinth has made its way to North-American HD-DVD.
Pan's Labyrinth is a fairy tale, but don't let the main character (a small girl) fool you. This movie is not for kids, as it features blood, violence, and scenes of death. Many people have said this movie is a cult classic already. It was originally filmed in Spanish and most likely will only be in English via subtitles. The good? It features 7.1 audio, instead of the 5.1 that many other HD-DVDs have.
Here is a quote of another review of the sound:
"Simply put, this mix is all about dynamics and immersion. The rear speakers rarely rest, populating the quietest scenes with the ambient hum of insects in the wind-swept forest. As tension mounts, the LFE channel pulses with powerful bass tones while the rear soundscape introduces the eerie melodies of the score. When violence inevitably erupts, the track goes for the jugular -- the floor rumbles, each speaker swarms with aggressive effects, and screams are clear and stable. Interior acoustics are spot-on, directionality is perfect, and channel movement is smooth. More importantly, dialogue is crisply balanced across the front channels and well prioritized even in the midst of chaos. I legitimately felt as if sounds were occurring from other sources in my home theater; an illusion I usually only encounter at my local multiplex. Each time I closed my eyes, I found myself transported to another world -- the track is that convincing."

The film was also a winner of three academy awards: best cinematography, best art direction, and best makeup.
Synopsis:
Spain, 1944. Officially, the Civil War has been over for five years, but a small group of rebels fights on unbroken in the northern mountains of Navarra. Dreamy 10-year-old Ofelia moves to Navarra with her delicate, pregnant mother Carmen, to become acquainted with her new stepfather, Captain Vidal, a Fascist officer under orders to rid the territory of rebels. Ofelia, who is fascinated by fairy tales, discovers an overgrown, tumbledown labyrinth behind the mill. In the heart of the labyrinth she meets Pan, an ancient satyr who claims to know her true identity and her secret destiny. But first, she must complete three tasks before the moon grows full. And no one must know: not her ailing mother, or her new friend, Mercedes. Time is running out, for Ofelia and for the rebels. Both will have to battle hardship and cruelty in order to gain their freedom. But, who can be trusted in a time of lies and danger? Is Pan telling the truth...? And if not, who is?
