Title: Mega CD Rarity ***AND*** Price List
Description: Newly Updated

Malakai - December 23, 2007 12:07 AM (GMT)
Note that this is our first attempt to incorporate a price guide in to our rarity list. There are no guarantees for accuracy or anything like that, as the Video Game markets change often, sometimes every month or two. I also can not guarantee that there will be a new release each and every month, as it takes a lot of time to keep it updated. It's unfortunate that the classic video gaming market is in such a slump, as you will see in the pricing below, especially around the holidays, when many people like to sell part of their collections to buy holiday gifts for their friends and families. We can only hope the market comes back in the new year!

I am releasing this version exclusively to the Good Deal Games message boards, as an early holiday gift. Not only has this one been updated with a price list, but a lot of the rarity guide has been updated as well. Enjoy

Sega Mega CD Rarity and Price List

Version 0.1, Q4 2007

___________________________

This list goes from 1 to 8. The reason that it does not only go to five is because there are so many different levels of rarity between the sega mega cd system games. The reason why it does not go to 10 is because the extra two points would not really be able to be used accurately, for several reasons. The main reason being that there were a very limited number of sega cd games made, compared to say playstation, nes, snes, etc. Lower numbers are less rare, higher numbers are more rare. So, we have to create a fair interpretation of rarity.

Also, there are several known name variants of Japanese games. Some may be correct, others may be somewhat off, etc. So, if you don't see a game you're looking up, look for it by its alternative name. A few of the games may not have a rarity number, just because I don't know how rare some of them are. The only honest way for me to make this list is to only write rare if a game is known to be rare, and only write unrare if a game isn't known as rare.

As both a collector of video games, including Japanese games, as well as previously being an import scout, I have been able to pretty accurately figure out ways of finding out which games are available, how often they are found, how many are available, and to see fluctuations between the markets. Believe it or not, Japan isn't the only place to find Japanese games regularly. Some of the places I've had to scout and hunt down games have been in Japan, China, Taiwan, England, France, and even the Netherlands, as well as the limited supply in the United States.

One thing that may surprise you in this list is that money paid for some of the games doesn't truly represent how rare a game is. Usually the price paid for the game has to do more with popularity and what's in demand. Rareness occasionally has a helping hand in it, but not all of the time.

Also, remember that almost all Japanese games come with a spine card, some with a map, and some with a cd soundtrack. If those, or the original cd inserts, are missing, it makes the game less rare, and it could de-value the game significantly. There have been cases when just the spine card was missing from a game, and the game only sold for half of what it was worth. So, such things as Americans would normally throw away, that's a no no!

If my calculations are correct, there were less than 4 million sega cd units sold in the world. That includes sega cd, sega cd 2, sega mega cd, sega mega cd 2, jvc x`eye, pioneer laseractive, wondermega, cdx, etc. The sega cd wasn't a very popular game system, for two reasons. It was an expensive addon, and mainly what Sega advertised was FMV games. Now, I don't have a problem with scrolling backgrounds or even cartoony FMV, because the cartoon videos, like dragon's lair, space ace, and many anime cutscenes look great for their time. What was bad were games that used it for real live-action video, for games like prize fighter. You get a tiny or very grainy or pixelated video or a mix of some or all of those things.

The Sega CD was more than just FMV though. It was about RPGs, space shooters, cd sound, action adventures, comic adventures, and many other things all rolled up into one. That's why the Sega/Mega CD is my favorite system of all time.

The price guides are an estimation of near mint games, not new-sealed, and not games that are heavily scratched or missing instructions, cases, spine cards, or other items. Prices are in US Dollars! Prices are for the going (aka selling) market prices, not asking prices.

3 Ninjas Kick Back
3 Ninjas was a double pack only game, which included hook. Hook was also sold separately. This double pack is starting to get a bit rare.
US Rarity: 5
US Price: $20

Jap Rarity:
*note: the rarity of this item is not in question, but the price is. The game isn't easy to find, although not particularly hard. The problem is the pricing. There are people wanting $60+ for copies, but what are people actually paying for them on online auction sites, etc? Probably around $10, and I gave this game a $20 tag, just to be generous.

3x3 eyes
This is an RPG based off of the Japaneses anime. I believe it also came with a soundtrack cd.

After Armageddon Gaiden
This is a pretty rare RPG. I originally thought it wasn't that fun of a game, because the last armageddon game on the PC Engine (Japanese Turbo Grafx) sucked, but this one is a lot more RPGish.
US Rarity: X
Eur Rarity: X
Jap Rarity: 7
Japanese Price: $50
*note: This is one of the most rare Mega CD games to find, and I'd love to give it a $200+ price, but generally, in the once-per-year or less that it does come on the market, it doesn't go for as high.

Afterburner 3
The all-time classic after burner, fighter pilot series
US Rarity: 1
US Price: $3.50
Eur Rarity:

Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Genchou Hishi

US Rarity: X
Eur Rarity: X
Jap Rarity: 8
Japanese Price: $80
*note: this is a game that took me over three years to find. After that, a few popped up here and there, and now, there hasn't been a copy around the net for quite awhile. It's one of those games that you may never find, no matter how much you look for it. It, in reality, is probably worth closer to $300, but the market, when it does find its way out occasionally, just doesn't agree with that price.

A-Rank Thunder
For a long time, this was thought to be the most rare mega cd game released, but recently, several copies have started turning up.
US Rarity: X
Eur Rarity: X
Jap Rarity: 6
Japanese Price: $12
*note: this is another very hard to find game. For years, it was very elusive, but lately, a few have surfaced, and it's another one that I believe that market doesn't share the same price, as far as rarity goes. I can't give it a higher price right now, because there is at least one on the net for this price.

Arcus 1, 2, 3
Pretty neat RPG that's hard to find sometimes.

Burai
This game wasn't rare two years ago, but it fluctuates. It is a great RPG, kinda like dragon warrior. I have based a lot of my RPG likes and dislikes by comparing them to dragon warrior, because it was one of the first RPGs that I really got into. Those games just seemed to hook you once you figured out how to play. Too bad the newer games can't be like these, although the new ones can be good in their own unique way.

Even though the US version can cost upwards of $200, that doesn't make it any more rare than it really is. So, it went from 8 to 7. 8 rarity should be for things you run across less than three times per year. That's not to say that things won't change in the future, because the market always fluctuates.

Night Trap
If any game had its place in history, it would be night trap, for two reasons. First, this game was banned due to its graphic nature, and inspired a ratings system for video games. I believe it was Joe Lieberman that pushed the envelope on that. The other reason is that it stared Dana Plato, who died of a drug overdose shortly after playing in this video game. She starred in the hit television series Different Strokes, was later arrested for robbing a bank, and even posed for playboy magazine.

One of the games that came with one of the sega cd bundles in the US, and I can see why. It was a sorry game, and developers just didn't want to throw it in the gargage, even though they should have. So, they put them in some of the bundles. Isn't that nice of them? Yet another game that commends a very high price that never made it to the US, but on the rarity vs popularity meter, the price is paid for popularity, not rarity, although it is somewhat rare. This is an RPG that gets a lot of mixed reviews. People say the graphics aren't up to par, some people say the game is bland, too long, too much fighting involved, and some say it's just too darn hard. I really like this game myself though. The Holy Grail of Sega/Mega CDs:
These following games are probably the most rare for the Sega CD currently. They are already up on the rarity list, but we will list them again here:

After Armageddon Gaiden
Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Genchou Hishi
Keio Flying Squadron (US Version)
Might and Magic III Isles of Terra
Orgel: Psychic Detective IV

These following games have the potential to be holy grail games in the future:

Dai Houshin Den
A-Rank Thunder
Earthworm Jim SE
Hisaichi Ishii's Political World
Sengoku Densho
Radical Rex
Alshark
Crime Patrol*
Demolition Man*

*games marked with star had less copies made and therefore when they run out in the market, they'll probably be impossible to find.

Thanks for checking out the sega/mega cd rarity list. Please note that the rarity list may not be complete or 100% accurate at all times, as the market changes constantly. The rarity list is based on how easy these games can be found and bought in the USA. The rarity of game X may be easy to find one year but extremely hard to find the next and vice versa.

If you wish to help with updating or adding more stuff to the mega cd rarity list, please join us at the Nostalgia BBS web boards!

Malakai - December 23, 2007 02:56 AM (GMT)
Just a little information regarding a possible update to this list later on. Here are some of the things I may update:

"fix any problems with the list
update more of the list (rarity and prices)
lightly update some of the game descriptions
put up alternative game names, pointing to one main game name"

I've already taken some notes from a few games that accidentally got missed and a few other problems. Each time I do an update, there are almost always fixes that need to be done.

Putting up alternate names will be nice, because some games have three names or more, like Genghis Khan II, for example:

Aoki Ookami to Shiroki Genchou Hishi
Genghis Khan II: Clan of the Gray Wolf
Last but not least: The Blue Wolf and White Stag

Some games may have just slightly off names. I don't know them all by heart but will search them all out if I can. This will make looking up games much more simple.

I am working on yet another format for the rarity list, with more detailed descriptions, etc. Obviously, all of the information won't fit on one page, and the final format (if there ever is a completed one) could either be a color-printed catalog, if possible, or pdf or html. However, it's still possible we could have both a multi-page lite/forum version and then the other.

What I would like to do in the new format is to create larger/better descriptions, add screenshots to most if not all games, add notes, and a few reviews.

This may not sound like a very difficult job, but it means going in and playing each and every game and taking screenshots of them, playing any games I haven't played before or that's been too long for me to remember exactly how the game plays, for reviews and notes, etc.

Unfortunately, if we move to a printed format, the list could obviously not be free. I'm not even sure of how much it would cost to print each magazine. My laser printer is only b&w, and screenshots don't look too good on it. So, I'd have to also get a color laser printer and possibly a ring binder. There are probably somewhere around 250 unique sega/mega cd games (haven't counted them all yet) - so, does each unique game get its own page, or do we squeeze as much as possible in to each and every page? If each game gets its own page, and we add 10 more misc pages for other stuff, that's around 260 pages for the list.

The other alternative to the one page per game theory is just to do it on an individual basis, as some games that are either very simple and don't require a lot of descriptions, or games that just suck and don't require much space, or some of the Japanese games that don't make any sense to Americans may only get 1/3rd or 1/2 of a page, while some games, like lunar silver star, lunar eternal blue, and dark wizard may get a whole page to their own.

There are a lot of decisions that would have to be made, and none of those are made yet. Even if we do go forward in this endeavor, it could still take up to a year to complete, if not longer. We can't devote all of our time towards something that is more of a novelty and not going to make us any money :/
