Title: PS3 sales still lagging way behind 360, Wii, PS2

Malakai - December 15, 2007 02:34 PM (GMT)
Sales figures have come in for November, with a total number of PS3 sales at 466,000, while the 360 has sold 770,000, and the wii 981,000. A $200 price reduction just after the 1-year mark still has not been able to save this system. It only has two top-ten games and continues to be outsold by its own PS2 system, while the 360 has been out two years, has only reduced the price of its consoles by $50, yet the 360 has 4 top ten games and is selling over 304,000 more than ps3 systems this month alone.

Of course, that's still nothing compared to the WII, which seems to be selling out every time it hits store shelves. I'm even hearing reports that many places can't even keep PS2s in stock for Christmas.

Unfortunately, this may be the year of not being able to get what you want for Christmas. Many kids will want a Wii for Christmas, and they probably already have a 360. So, their parents may have to "settle" with a PS3. No good games are on it, but hey, it's a blu-ray player, right???

So, do you think sony will actually lose this generations war?

It's very hard to say who will win, because there are a few things I see bad about all of the systems.

First, the 360. It really seems like microsoft put all of their cards on the table in within the first year, to gain some glare. Sure, Halo 3 came out, which isn't as big or good as it was suppose to be, but now, they're focusing on xbox live features. There just isn't any good games coming out for the 360.

We got a lot of false hopes with past releases, like Halo 3, with its last-gen graphics, two worlds, which many people have thought could have been a savior to the xbox, due to its morrowind likeness, but what came off of store shelves was garbage. It was nothing like any of the elder scrolls games. Blue dragon, another that I didn't personally like. Eternal Sonata, one that I kind of liked, but either not many people gave it a chance or those who did thought it was too repetitive, the storyline a bit lame or even confusing, cutscenes a bit too long.

Let's just hope Lost Odyssey or The Precursors changes something dramatically. Even then, the precursors isn't coming out until 2009. So, it could be too little too late. Oh yeah - where's Gears of War 2?

2nd, the Nintendo Wii... The Wii is going to be hard to beat for awhile, but when the steam blows over (AKA when you can go to any store and buy it off of store shelves) it'll just be another video game system sitting on store shelves. How in the world can you play this "Oh, we can't make enough systems" game? It seems to happen almost every time a console is released, but the nintendo wii has been out over a year now, hasn't it? It's all about profits, and I suppose it's paying off short term. Just wait until about 6 months after Christmas. Systems will be everywhere, and they won't be flying off of store shelves.

3rd, Xbox 360 vs PS3. I think this war will be between the 360 and the ps3 systems in the end. There is no question in my mind that the xbox was the better of the xbox 1 vs ps2, and even though the xbox was better and more powerful, the ps2 still won by huge margins. Now that Microsoft has its foot in the door, things have definitely changed a lot. Many people will say "Sure, the 360 had a year start," and that would generally equal more games available, but it doesn't matter. They both have to be almost equally priced. The PS3 still has to come down another $100, and by then, the xbox may even get another $30 or $50 price cut as well.

Besides the price of the PS3, I think the rest of the war is up to Microsoft. They will most likely control the console race in North America after the Wii loses its flare. For how long, who knows.

Let's just wait and see how many gimmicks each console gets in the coming years lol...

Absolutely. I see PS3s being resold at the local Replays every time I'm there checking for new DS games. I am out of sympathy for them. Stick a fork in
'em Sony's done!

I don't know why this kind of topic always gets me riled up, but I have to ask:

What flare? Are you that ready to close the door on the big N? Every time I go to that site there are new games to be released on Wii and then I see the shelves grow. I think you are underestimating their chances. It's the eye of the hurricane, man! Super Mario Galaxy is only the tip of the iceberg. And Virtual Console is coming along nicely. Things look good for Nintendo.

I still give Microsoft credit, but this is no runaway for Gates and Co.

Nintendo has said themselves that they aren't competing with the big guns, because their processors just aren't half of what the 360 and ps3s are. The wii is mainly an upgraded gamecube, in terms of graphics, cpu, ram, etc. It just has a lot of updates and gimmicks (the wii-mote.)

Since the gamecube came out, Nintendo has played the "Our system is slower, and we aren't competing with MS or Sony, but our system is cheaper, and we are making a profit on each sale" game. Sony and MS either aren't making money on their systems or are making very little.

Since the ps1 came out, it wasn't about making money from the game system itself, but all of the accessories and games. RPGs had their own batteries in their carts, turbo duo, 3do, sega cd had their own internal save ram, etc, but now, all of a sudden, you have to buy memory cards, expensive 2nd player controllers, gameguns, and you generally didn't get any free games included with systems.

Sure, there were 'core' systems that may have come out in later days for the NES, Genesis, etc, but still, the first nintendos had 2 controller, mario and duck hunt, and a light gun.

Now, with wireless controllers, you have to buy chargers and battery packs, or rechargeable batteries if you don't want to constantly replace batteries. Now, there are hard drives and/or mandatory memory cards.

***END OF RANT
LOL

It's not that I'm harping on the "BIG N." In fact, I loved the NES, SNES, and even the gamecube. Unfortunately, I got rid of most of my nes and snes games awhile back, because there isn't as much space in the new house as there was in the old, and I cleared out probably 2/3rds of my gaming collection.

I did, however, find a copy of destiny of the emperor for the NES a couple months back and will hopefully keep it for awhile.

Yeah those lifeless ad/PR dorks love lining them up as the Big 3 just to feel important. Wasted lives all of them. I know about the landscape though I still want Nintendo to be top dog again. You all know the whole story and my stance as well.

It's nice to be back.

Well, think about it. Gamecube was the same as the wii, as far as profits for Nintendo. The Cube made lots of money, and now, the Wii is making lots of money. In the next gen systems, they may actually have enough money to invest in a gaming system that actually competes (Spec-wise) with Sony and MS.

With the DS and PSP, it really has brought portable gaming to console people, I think, especially with the wifi, movies, hacking/emulators, etc, but that also means that these handhelds are also competing against those consoles. It's sad for Sony, because they have an older system beating out their PS3, as well as their handheld psp selling more than their ps3s by over 101,000 units in November alone.

I'm sure Sony is making money off of their PS2 and PSP, but they are pushing both PS3 as a new gaming platform, and the Sony president is depending on the PS3 to actually push blu-ray technology. They not only have a lot of money to lose, but also credibility, with many third-party companies.

The video gaming market has actually seen over 13 billion dollars worth of sales this year alone, and who knows, by the end of December, maybe that'll be 14 billion.

Even if Sony doesn't like their PS3 not outselling their other systems after a year, I believe it is helping them to keep the PS2 out for a longer period of time, as far as profits go, because if they put all of their cards on the PS3 and took everything else off the market, they would probably go bankrupt if the PS3 didn't make a lot of money.

Sony isn't a wealthy business, like Microsoft. They sell cheap crap electronics and rely heavily on outside investors to get products like PS3 and other technologies off the ground. Even their PS1 and PS2s weren't made with quality in mind.
