The first dual-format (Blu-Ray/HD-DVD) drive came out awhile back, but it didn't support many of the HD-DVD features. In fact, there was no HD-DVD menus and no HDI features. LG apparently could not upgrade the firmware for these features. So, any one who bought it is stuck with it.
But with out having menu navigation, how can you watch an HD-DVD on the first player? Apparently, you stick in the disc, and it just plays the movie, no special features, no config settings, nothing.
Because of these problems, LG got in hot water with the DVD Forum. In fact, the DVD forum would not let LG use their logos (hd-dvd, hdi) on the system.
Now, a new player from LG was suppose to be released in Oct 2007, but has been delayed until? We've read November, but no sign of the system yet: LG BH200. LG has promised to have all official, final-spec features for both formats on this new player.
This new player will cost $1000 in retail stores. If I were to add a blu-ray player to my collection, it'd probably be a $399 player. That means I'd spend $600 maximum on both the HD-DVD and Blu-Ray players combined. So, it's just not an ideal price yet.
