Title: Sega Game Gear questions
Description: What's the difference between various GG
Scooter - February 6, 2007 04:54 AM (GMT)
I recently bought a really nice original Game Gear in the original box with manuals and everything. According to the packaging styling, this is one of the last Game Gear versions to be sold. The box says this unit is not compatible with the TV Tuner. My question is: why not? What is different about this unit that makes in incompatible?
I also recently landed one of the more rare blue Game Gears, the ones sold with a sports pack back in the day. Is the blue one also not compatible with the TV Tuner? It hasn't arrived yet, so I can't yet try it out for myself.
Any idea what all colors of Game Gears were sold in Japan?
Correct me if I'm wrong, but the Game Gear never was calibrated by zone, right? A Japanese GG would play game sold in the US wouldn't it? Since no TV was required, I'm assuming the units themselves were all the same. I know there were different versions of the TV Tuner by zone, but that's different than the GG unit itself.
Thanks in advance for any info.

I dont know about the TV tuner, but GameGear games have no regional lockout. I dont know the colors in japan, but they did get a Red Coca-Cola Game Gear!

The GameGear you have was prob. on of the last one's made. Sega sold the rights for the Genesis and the GameGear to Majesco. The Genesis 3 model and the last GameGear's don't work with some of the accessories.
Like the Genesis 3 does not work with the Sega CD or the 32X, the Game Gear will not use the TV adapter and i think the Game Genie dosn't work with it also.
hope this helps a little.

Thanks for the info. I'm guess that these later Game Gears were simplified inside and thus didn't have the contacts to work with the TV Tuners.
I'm still looking for an earlier MIB Game Gear. They pop up occassionally. I'm finding it hard to find an affordable Nomad in decent shape though.

Do six rechargeable AA batteries hurt a Game Gear? Because I know they eat up alkalines like candy.
