Just a thought. What are the best classic compilations out on the market today? What are the best of yesteryear? What are the best that you've heard about in the up-and-coming months?
Personally, I'm partial to three right now: Sega Genesis Classics, the Atari Anthology and the Taito Legends packages. Classics has a lot of good stuff on it, Golden Axe, Phantasy Star... good to play with friends. The Atari Anthology has as perfect of emulation as I've ever seen, and plays like a dream (even Tempest plays well with the thumbstick on the PS2, I don't have the XBox version). And Taito Legends has some of my favorite games of all time on it, like Bubble Bobble and Rainbow Islands, as well as Super Qix and, of course, the many incarnations of Space Invaders.
Anybody have any they'd like to touch on, or expand on?
I played stuff from Konami, Namco, Midway, and the Sonic collections.
Super Mario All Stars and Genesis 6 Pak are still the best damn compilations ever made. Nearly all the new ones are boring and will never hold a candle to the 16-bit-era game compilations.
Game makers have tried to rake in the cash by re-releasing their own materials, but I think only Nintendo and Sega can successfully achieve that. All-Stars and 6 Pak prove that.
So, no, so far the new collections to me are only worth renting or picking up from the bargain bin for about five bucks. Maybe Capcom can garner sales with the Vol. 2 collection, who knows?
A complete Square Enix compilation with unlockable goodies would be pretty nice about right now!
I love the Sega Genesis collection and the Capcom Vol. 1. Midway #2 for PS2 is cool as well, I love all the oldschool fighters. Long live MK2.
