I finally got to see this much wanted-to-see movie, and it was a big disappointment. It sort of felt like it was a game instead of a movie, and it had little or no character or personality. I'm not sure if it was 100% based on the games, because I haven't completed the games, but I did see several parts they had taken from Silent Hill 2.
I feel that this could have been a lot better if they only used the games as sort of a base for the movie, and then have the writers come up with their own actual story and events.
The first half of the movie totally sucked, while the second half sort of got interesting. That's about all I can say about it. I can't even recommend this as a rent.

Are you serious? I actually liked the movie. I thought it did a good job of following the game and was one of the better video game to movie conversions.
Well, if you thought it followed the game well, then that's the reason why I didn't think it had any personality or character, because it felt just like the game, but even then, it wasn't really as scary as they had made it out to be either. The Silent Hill series has made its name being the most scary games made. When I watched the previews on tv when it hit theaters, it looks like it was going to be a really good horror film. I guess I judged the book by its cover.
I think, in most good films, you get to know the characters and either really like them or really hate them, but in this film, you really don't get to know the charcters, don't get to like or hate them. So, they're sort of bland. Of course, that doesn't mean you're not going to root for the good guy, because most people probably would.
If you compare the same thing, excluding the story line, to let's say the Resident Evil movie, you get to know Alice's character more and more throughout the movie, starting from when the special ops for the umbrella corp bust in the door. They tell her she works for the umbrella corperation, and as she progresses through the hive, she sees people, surroundings, photos and such and you get to know who she is from flashbacks and such.
The plot of the movie may have been simple: Go in to the hive, find out what had caused the problem, and shut down the security system. Even though it was considered a pretty low-budget movie, I think they pulled it off pretty well.
Now, if you look at the silent hill movie, let's say as some one that likes horror and hadn't even heard of the video game. What do you know about the character? She has a crazy daughter and a husband that is trying to shelter/protect their daughter from the world. The daughter keeps mentioning silent hill. So, the mother wants to take the daughter to silent hill, hoping to find answers or that it would be theraputic in some way.
Every thing after that will probably confuse any one. Are they dead, are they in some type of other dimension, or is it a dream, or what? In the end, it really seems like they are dead and are just ghosts, but if that was so, what happened to the bodies when they had the car wreck? The husband and police searched the area and didn't find any bodies. Did the police take the bodies, or were they protecting some type of secret? Did silent hill symbolize purgatory? Are they trapped in Silent Hill's fog forever? What did all of the deformed creatures symbolize? Probably more questions than answers there..
In a lot of movies that have mystery endings, there are usually only 2 possible questions: Are they dead? and Are they still alive? Some times, there are hints as to what happens in the book version or from author interviews or notes, but there really isn't a source to fall back on to find the answers. Bits and pieces of multiple games.
Well, if you're a die-hard silent hill fan, then it is scheduled to be out on dvd aug 22nd. Good luck!
