Saw lots of Land Rovers on the A1 this afternoon - some of them muddy, most of them clean...

If I hadn't been trail riding today I'd have been there, and on the course. Still got a vehicle to clean...

I'm wondering what the shackle on the tie-down loop is for - surely the towing eye would be more a more sensible place for it?

Llanigraham - September 14, 2008 06:47 PM (GMT)
If that shackle is fitted to the tie-down eye
DO NOT USE IT FOR TOWING OR RECOVERY
It is not designed to take the strain and is likely to pull off damaging the vehicle and possibly causing great danger to anyone near by!!!

i killed my freebie on the course  went through the course no problem also went thro the mud run at the end travelling back to the show battery light and warning lights came on ,parked up at the caravan went to restart it and nothing would only run on jump leads, alternater knackered and a recovery truck home with the caravan on the back :D just downloading pics will put one up think i went a bit too deep! i was very impressed tho going round course ,went up the hills with ease and watched some struggle ,followed a range rover round and i faired better in some parts, the traction control and hdc was impressive for what others call hairdressers cars !

Kevlander you are not alone, did exactly the same thing :o , did the course again at about 10:30 am today, was told that the water was much deeper because not many had been through, went for it anyway, entered a bit fast but got the bow wave going, got back to show site OK but when we set off up the A1 got about 15 miles & alternator light came on, tested the voltage & it showed the alternator was bollix'd. drove on with the missus measuring the voltage at the cigar lighter socket but A1 was snarled up so didn't get far when the voltage had dropped to about 12V & was dropping like a stone we pulled into the Ram Jam Inn & had a few beers while waiting for the AA man (well I knew I wasn't going to be driving again today :( ). Luckily it was dark by the time the AA got it up on the truck.
Did you take a look where the alternator is, it is about 8 - 10 inches BELOW the air intake, the power steering pump is actually mounted above it, Haynes manual says you get at it from below after removing sump guard, is that a screwed up design or what, that's the first 4X4 I have owned where the alternator isn't up near the top of the engine bay. I think that is probably why the "official" wading depth limit is pretty conservative.
You see, the shackle on the tie down eye came in handy !!!! ( seriously that will be removed tomorrow, thanks for the warning guys
Where are you located, maybe we could get a bulk discount on alternators ;)
Pic below shows todays "watermark"

Great pics sirs!

I don't know enough about cars - let alone my Freelander to risk such an adventure....would love to though, so maybe one day! [drve]

kevlander - September 15, 2008 07:37 AM (GMT)
:D nice one trunty youve made me feel better knowing i wasnt the only one, like you said i cant believe where the alternator is, and its hard to remove too!! was told by a few broken down admirers at the show that it might be all the sand lodged in with the brushes so when i get back from work im gonna try giving the engine a good jet wash and the alternator a good blasting (cant do anymore damage!)let it dry out then see if it has any effect before i go out and buy a new or maybe try ebay or breakers, brand new £280 !!!!!!!!

trunty - September 15, 2008 07:59 AM (GMT)
I was thinking the same as you, I'm just about to get the pressure washer out to give it a blast, like you say can't do any more damage & it was making a bit of a "rubbing" noise when the light came on, I did try spraying water on it before the AA came but it was only low pressure, even though I'd drank 2 beers :o .
I have cooled off a bit this morning cos I was a tad miffed yesterday & realised the TD4 engine was designed to be stuck in the front of a Beemer so as long as it could handle a carwash it was ok ;)
I bought an extended warranty from Lloyds so I will see if it covers the alternator. Saw some new ones on the net last night for around £200 inc vat.

George Stoker - September 15, 2008 09:37 AM (GMT)
Give me a shout if you get stuck guys - I can get you alternators a little cheaper than your quoted prices

trunty - September 15, 2008 10:31 AM (GMT)
OK George, thanks for that, I've just given it a good spray & will give it a try when it dries out a bit but I think it will be getting the last rites,

kevlander - September 15, 2008 02:14 PM (GMT)
just about to give mine a good jetting, might take you up on that george ive been trying to get the correct part numbers you couldnt help me out on that on could you? i need the td4 type with air con, tried different web sites but getting differing part numbers  there is also a specialist in coventry that refurb alternators so if the wash out dont work i think it might be strip out and see what he can do .

trunty - September 15, 2008 04:56 PM (GMT)
Been cleaning up the Freelander all day, jetted the Alternator 3 times, it is pretty difficult to get at & it is just as dead as it was so it is going to have to be replaced. The good news is that it is covered under warranty unless someone from the warrantiers is a member of the forum then I think the game would be up, although the warranty conditions only list racing, rallying or competition as "getout" clauses.

What are rosettes for? Best of breed? It's certainly got a glossy coat... :D

kevlander - September 15, 2008 08:37 PM (GMT)
trunty stick with it,jetted mine out and used some gt 85 got a mate round for jump leads left it trickle charging for a few mins ,then started her up ,left her ticking over and then gave the alternator a few sharp taps which started to kick it in too life, ran the engine at about 4000 revs and the battery light was going out, looking hopefull only jetted from top and at side, so tomorrow gonna get underneath ,sump guard off and attack it from under with jet and some more gt 85 ,hopefully that with a few sharp whacks should do the trick ,if it was completly dead it wouldnt be intermittent so im now hoping its just the brushes full of sandy s##t ,well thats what im hoping

trunty - September 16, 2008 03:47 PM (GMT)
Tried again but alternator still dead, have arranged to have it replaced tomorrow. Kevlander, has yours come back to life permanently ?

daave - October 15, 2008 10:28 AM (GMT)
It seems like I wasn't the only one, who had problems after doing this course.
As soon as I stopped there was billowing steam from the front of my car, and noticed the battery light had came on on the way home! Alternator had died but luckily under warranty. Was allegedly fixed at gge but 300 miles later was back on a truck but this time went to a proper gge.
Can now understand why I didn't buy from local dealers and went a bit further now.
