Title: Hi - From Scarborough
Description: Tyre size choice

Hi all. I have a TD4, bought from new at Motorpoint (nice guys) on a 55 plate. I am not into really serious off-roading but do use the car to get across some steep, muddy and slippery fields, mainly to get wood for the fire. I often tow a trailer with some 1/2 - 3/4 ton of wood in it across the same fields. The original tyres are starting to show their age and I want to fit some AT type tyres. I would love to fit BF Goodrich AT's (used them before on 2 Troopers) but the smallest they do is 215/75/R15. Does anyone have any experience of fitting these on the OE 15" alloys? Some comments I have read say they will rub the suspension but others seem to say they are fine. Any comments would be great as these are too costly to buy and then find I regret it!

Fitted some General Grabber AT2's to my '06 plate TD4 and used Event Tyres (www.event-tyres.co.uk ) who gave me a very good online price. They came to my house and fitted 'em with no hassle, the guy was really helpful and the tyres seem fine, all done and dusted in 40 minutes.
Just my 2 pence worth?

215/75/15 will be OK on Freelander
Overall Diameter is 27.7 and you can go to 28.5 quite safely
Here is a pic of a motor fitted with Colways in that size

Forgot to say - Welcome :D
We regularly get down to your area on the Green Lanes

Thanks guys for replies. George - I was more concerned about the width of the tyre rather than circumference. I thought the 215 might be too close to the suspension struts both front and rear and may rub? Presumably they don't rub as you seem quite happy with them on yours? How much clearance have you got? Are we taking only a mm or 2?

well - thats not my car but I ran 215 80's without problem.
here's a pic in fighting trim

Thanks again George - was yours lifted to fit them or just standard vehicle on standard 15" rims?
Synapse, thanks for your input. The AT2's look like a carbon copy of the BFG's. Is your the 205 or the 215 size? The tyres are available in both sizes I think.

No lift - just standard
Tyres are Colway AT's and 215 (I think) on standard LR 15" steel rims
I'll have a look in workshop on Monday to check size

Mine were 215's but on 16 inch alloy rims on my 2006 TD4.

Thanks Synapse. I think the 16" are 6" though - the 15" are only 5"? I'm not sure if that is going to make a difference.
Did you manage to have alook George? Plenty of clearance?
Synapse - following yours (and others) suggestions I have just ordered a Synergy 2 from Roverron. I could not get RAC to do the modification without increasing my premium and excess. You seemed to have managed it though reading the other thread. I have found the best quote as from Autotrader, they have kept the excess to a low £200 and are fine about the modification. In fact they didn't seem interested whereas the other insurance co.s all wanted to know exactly how much it increased performance and had bands for less than 10%, 10 - 20%, 20 - 30% and over.
Cheers Dean

Cheers George. Looks like I'll get my BFG's fitted then :-)

Have had BFG's fitted for a couple of months now and they are as good as I remember thm being on previous 4 x 4's I've had (Trooper and Terrano). The stiffer side wall means less roll in the corners, but road noise is up a tad. Grip fantastic though in this recent snow!
However, I seem to recollect someone saying that Goodrich recommend an extra 5 - 6 psi in their tyres over the usual manufacturers advised pressures. Anyone got any views on this?
