Hi I Have a 2001 Freelander GS the hardback model. Recently when driving and changing gears for around 2-3 hours, it starts to get hard to push the gear stick into the right gear, Its ok for a while when I start driving and only happens after a few hours, I dont know much about cars, but its doesnt feel like the clutch but more the gearbox, do you think I need the gearbox re-built or a new clutch or both ? how much is this going to set me back..... I feel pain in my wallet !! any ideas before I go to a garage would be great ! thanks

HI Dan, have you checked the gear box oil level, when was the last time it was changed. It sounds to me like metal is expanding because of the heat that is being developed by your box, also grease the gear stick lineages. Allot of gear box problems stem from lack of maintenance IE failing to Chang and topping up of the oil.

RE Badboys comments, he is not of this world but from a planet many light years a way and if you came across his FL you would know what I mean. he is a good lad though.

HI Dan, no you are not being stupid, the gear box level/filler is on the passenger side I think on your modal it is just above the drive shaft if not it's to the rear of the same, it can be a bugger to fill/top up though and yes you will have to Jake up the FL and remove the sump guard it's held in place my approx 8 bolts and a couple of screws. I hope this helps.

PS is your FL a TD4 or 1.8, if it is the former then also check your clutch fluid reservoir and system. If it's the latter. then still check for leaks, but this system can not be bled you have to Chang the lot, very easy job and not that expensive approx £50, not LR's silly prices.

Hi,
I have got a FL TD4 Automatic 2005. How can I check and change the oil in the gearbox?

If you go to:
http://www.green-oval.com/
you will be able to download the Freelander "RAVE" which includes the workshop and service manuals, which will describe this in detail.

Think of a Haines manual written by Land Rover!

Cheers

i had this exact same problem in my first week of ownership. i was on holiday when it started to happen then after it had been left overnight i was unable to get any gears with the clutch pressed. double d clutched back to the dealers. Diagnoses was low Clutch fluid!
