Looks like they might catch on fast to Reid's problem - this pleases me both in its realism and not having Reid go off the deep end with the drugs :D
I also admire the careful wording of the snippet - "...Because the murders appear to be random..." Sly move, TV Guide writers, very sly <_<
Reid's Girl - February 19, 2007 02:59 AM (GMT)
come on, it's reid and they are profilers..the drug problem just doesn't seam like a realistic problem here, while it could happen, nothing is impossible, reid seams like the least likey anyway. it could prove intresting, but most likely tiresome.

At first, Hotch, Gideon and the team believe they are dealing with a homeless vagrant who is terrorizing a Houston neighborhood slated for revitalization. So I guess Morgan's little talk with Reid last week didn't really help him. :( I was hoping that he would have taken something Morgan said to him and used it.

My god, I HATE thast show. To me, it encourages bullying of people. I teach high school and we work hard to teach kids not to be bullies or to make fun of people and this show glamorizes that. I think it has a very insidious message underneath all the laughs.
Sorry, but this is a big issue with me. I just don't understand why people want to watch other people be humiliated.
I'll be watching NCIS as always on Tuesdays. It's my other obsession and second fave show after CM. It USED to be my fave till CM came along.

Why does that seem unlikely? Intelligence is not an impediment to drug problems, though it might seem that it ought to be. It's a prroblem in all professions, including among doctors and nursed, who you would think would know better. But that's the reality of drugs. And remember Reid didn't just start smoking crack or something for fun. This was done to him. He didn't initiate the problem.

I was interested in the possible parallels between the unsub and Reid from the trailers on CBS. Something about needing to rescue more than the victims. Implications that the unsub is reacting to some serious trauma. Makes the need to "rescue" REid all the more important. Not that I think he would turn into an unsub, though I have read that in fanfic. But he is going to need the team.
Don't know if that was what the people who did the trailer were implying or if I am just a literature teacher who is used to looking for connections, symbols, and allusions everywhere. It's an occupational hazard.
Anyway, can't wait till tomorrow. Thank god I have an NCIS fix tonight and had my 24 fix on Monday. Then CM and then another dry spell till Monday.
Tooks - February 20, 2007 04:04 PM (GMT)
I noticed the possible parallel too - "sometimes not just the victims need to be rescued".
Like Special Agent Jentzer noted "distress" isn't just a military term, it's also a medical one related to drug use.
This looks like a good one! :D

The only reason I don't feel bad for the people is because they know EXACTLY what they are getting into when you auddition for american Idol. They KNOW that they have a 50% chance of being humiliated on national television and if they are willing to take that risk then they have opened the door.
If you aren't willing to take the heat get out of the kitchen. It's not a normal audition but...they know that.
It's like.....Jackass. Sure, They are doing really stupid stunts and somtimes they are humiliating themselves but they know they are doing it so that opens the door for me to laugh at thier stupidity.
Anyway, in some cases good things come even to thoes who are humiliated on Idol. For instance, The 2 guys that became "friends" in the line Now have agents. (Simon called that one guy a Bushbaby and I do have to say that was uncalled for. It's one thing to comment on singing, another on looks.) And I think Willam Hung went platnum with is album.
The only season I have sympathy for is season 1, they didn't know.
Ok, I'm done, I'm really done.
(Ncis is also a good show.)
Ok, I'm really done!

I know I know I know!!
The moment I herd that on the preview that is the very first thing I though of, Reid.
It has to have a double meaning.
I really can't wait for this episode.
23 hours, 46 minuets and 40, 39, 38....
Pshla - February 21, 2007 02:19 AM (GMT)
Actually, I have a feeling that Reid's little talk with Morgan is what triggers his drug use.
I dunno...Morgan was talking about "Use it", and Reid had a rather peculiar little smile playing on his lips, so I'm thinking that maybe he interpreted "it" to be the drugs....
I know it seems a bit far-fetched, but it's just a hunch I have.
Tooks - February 21, 2007 02:49 AM (GMT)
Hate to disagree but I'm going to have to, Pshla.
I acknowledge Reid has poor social skills, that it's possible he could misread cues from others , but I don't think he'd misunderstand Morgan that severely. I also think Reid has the logical sense to know that using drugs will not lead to any form of "enlightenment" concering Unsubs.
My guess is once Reid starts using it'll be because either his uncontrollable need to escape from his flashbacks (flashbacks of his childhood are likely less traumatic then those of being beaten repeatedly) or because he can't sleep (many with PTSD get insomnia) and just wants some way (any way) to knock himself out.
But I could be wrong...we'll just have to wait and see!
Special Agent Jentzer - February 21, 2007 02:58 AM (GMT)
Looks like those of us in Canada will have to wait until tomorrow night to watch it on CBS like the rest. CTV isn't showing it tonight.
CKB...........oh wow, perhaps you have upset the TV gods here in Canada. ....
now we get NO Criminal Minds tonight, we get "The TOP 27 Boy American Idols" AND then to twist the knife a little, tommorow we get "The TOP 23 Girl American Idols"......no word on the new epsiode........Thank god for cable!
I to, shall watch NCIS and The Unit.
And I really do hope tha Ziva, perhaps, has the opportunity to beat someone up.....I need a girl with a gun, who ain't afraid to use it.
poor reid, it seems he thinks the team fears he might go off the deep end like elle. I't's good he opened up to morgan, he's talking about his fears. This is a good sign, maybe still on the fence
 come on reid take the drugs...(bad angel on his left shoulder)
:D talk about your feelings to your friend morgan, Just Say NO!!(good angel on his right shoulder)
although I still really think morgan had his sensitivity chip removed on the plane. "its called empathy, and it's a good thing"
have you ever had the bottom of your feet beat upon?
Did anyone else notice how very long dr spencer reids finger nails are??? he has neat hands.
I'm kinda glad we must all wait ........
:canada:
Tooks - February 21, 2007 03:13 AM (GMT)
I'll agree that it'll be a battle for Reid - and that Morgan didn't seem like the most empathetic man on the plan himself. His words themselves were helpful (it may be helpful to have someone point out that this terrible experience can be used to one's advantage - that going through the experiences of a victim may help in vicimology and thus finding an Unsub), but initially his tone was a bit rough around the edges.
I could not tell you, by the way, how much a cringed when I relaized Reid's feet were about to be beaten -- I've injured my feet before and the pain is unreal... was squirming in my seat for Reid.
And, surprisingly, I didn't notice Reid's long fingernails - but I'm going to be looking now! :)

It's not the people on the show I feel bad for. It's the message it sends out that it is cool to be mean to other people. Like it gives validation to the kind of kids who kicked and beat up on Reid in school b/c he was different or seemed weird to them. We teachers are fighting very hard in the wake of events likes Columbine to make kids understand that bullying is wrong and a show like this undermines those efforts by glamourizing cruelty and making it funny.
I am not even sure that the people on the show are for real. I thnk the humiliations are set ups. But the message is stillout that it is cool to be a bully.

Email me off list and let me know if you want a copy of the episode. And yeah, I did notice his long fingernails. One of the interviews...maybe on the Season 1 DVD set....said that he wanted to grow his nails long at the beginning of the show and they said no, so he cout them off and left them on someone's desk. I forget who. I g uess he decided to grow them again and they said sure.
Normally that would creep me out, but on Reid, hey, it's kinda cute. Heck, on Reid most anything is kinda cute.

I heard that story too... his idea for his character was to be this unkempt hermit type so he grew his fingernails really long and when they wanted him to be very clean cut they made him cut them. He said for a joke he saved them and put them on the producer's desk with a note "from the head of CBS" saying they wanted some props from the Criminal Minds set. (they still have them) Ewwww! Gross!
How did we get from the "Distress" episode to fingernails??? <_<

To me the show isn't bullying and I don't think most kids read it that way.
I don't think that anyone can get the message "beat people because they are different" because simon says mean things to people who can't sing on a singing show.
Maybe I'm just lucky and I go to a school where bullying isn't a huge problem but I've never (and I don't think anyone I know has ever) read the show that way.
Kids who bully other kids would do it even if American Idol wasn't on and they don't need Validation.
Anyway, back to Criminal minds....

:( :( :(
I am very concerned how tonight's and next weeks show are going to go. Has anyone seen the new TV Guide??? Feb. 26th issue?? It as a good article on MGG, but he says in it that this story line is "killing" him. That he tries to make Reid lovable and he is afraid the fans "are going to hate him, but that the drugs make him human."
I hope the show is not going to ruin Reid and everything we love about him.
LeeChrista - February 21, 2007 05:33 PM (GMT)
OMG how did you already get a new TV Guide? You must subscribe. This made me cry hearing what Matthew said.

I need a countdown..
I'm spending the night at my cousins, maybe, and I'm sooo afraid that I might miss CM.... I'll have my bro tape it back home.
School got cancelled today. WOOT!
Okay, sorry...
-cough-
I don't want to wait.. I'm a very twitchy/impatient/gotta do something person, and when I have to wait for these things I get bouncy and wriggle a bunch, and It bugs people. (I.E. Essie, my cuz)
ARRGH!!

I'm going to go do karaoke to take my minds off things. Wish me luck!

Tonight can't come soon enough here either.......Or next week for that matter.
The article also states that next week he has a chance meeting with his old archrival and it forces him to confront his addiction---"with startling consequences." ???? What could that be? I don't like the word "startling". Of course we then have a month or so of repeats after that I think someone posted. :-no

SPOILERS:
--------------
Seriously - multi-episodic spoilers-----------------------
I agree, "startling" is rarely a good thing :ph43r: ..."startling consequences" is worse :(
..I wonder if Reid's going to get into some kind of physical altercation with this rival (possibly because the rival confronts him publicly on the addition)? Or take some drugs to escape the stress of running into the rival, OD, and end up in the hospital?
If there's a break between "Jones" (the arch-rival one) and "Ashes and Dust" (which is listed as the next episode afterwards on some sites) maybe the break is for Reid to enter rehab?
I really don't want the writers to destroy Reid's character so early in the show. There are just so many ways this could go bad for the character and the show. :(
ETA: More possible spoilers, lol! (though I'm sure many have read this previously)
(from
About.com's Interview with MGG)
Q: What's ahead on Criminal Minds for Spencer? Matthew: "I've heard some pretty exciting stuff! I've heard I have an archenemy coming up. He's a kid I went to school who is one I.Q. point smarter, a little bit taller, better looking. He lives in New Orleans and plays jazz. They've hinted at shades of schizophrenia with Reid. I know his mother was schizophrenic and he has a fear of going schizophrenic himself. I'd like to think that one day down the line he will go schizophrenic and maybe turn into the type of person they'll chase relentlessly."
-- I hope these writers have the presence of mind to know that if they go the schizophrenic route there's no going back and, logically, Reid would not be able to function at the BAU (or almost any job) with the disease

I don't like the phrasing he used eaither.
I mean, What is that suposed to mean?!?!!?
Maybe he just didn't think it through like we are.
btw, I don't think that Reid will go schizophrenic. Not through this anyway....
I think that was just MGG being....MGG.
Tooks - February 21, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
...I can over analyze at times...
No, no I don't think Reid'll go schizophrenic over this -- it's smarter for ratings to stretch the mental-illness/Reid connection out for as long as possible.
(If they ever do have Reid leave the show I do hope it happens exactly the way MGG described - in a blaze of insanity  )
I love this show! - February 22, 2007 03:07 AM (GMT)
Well.....what do we think? We still don't know if Reid is actually using the drugs. Is he just cranky because he can't sleep? J.J. sure doesn't seem traumatized in any way. It seems like everyone noticed Reid was acting weird but no one said anything?
Guest - February 22, 2007 03:15 AM (GMT)
I think Reid is going through a withdrawal, cause some of the symptoms are irrability, yawning, fidgity.
I thought it was good episode, yet depressing at the same time. I never experiened PTSD, but I imagine it must be hell to relive the same event over and over and then snapping.

It's not withdrawl he's going through. it's addiction.
(And yes, I posted this quote before....)

Symptoms of Dilaudid Addiction
Common symptoms of Dilaudid usage include anorexia, nervousness, constipation, dizziness, sleepiness, and impairment of mental and physical performance. Fluctuating mood, vomiting, sedation, sluggishness, and low breathing rate are also seen among Dilaudid addiction. |
The rest of the symptoms make me wonder what he is really in for!
There is one thing I'm Absolutly positivly sure he's addicted to. Caffine! Speaking of food....
That one sypmtom, Anorexia I didn't higlight but did anyone notice that Reid didn't eat in this episode. I mean, In almost every episode he's eating....somthing.
It's always somthing Random. Like I remeber in "The big game" he was eating a Rice Crispy treat. I've also seen chips and other random snack foods.
I'm not really sure but I think in Fear and Loathing they showed him eating somthing at the begining in the background of the Morgan/Prentiss scene. Maybe he was just getting coffe though. (I already earased it from my DVR so maybe someone else can cheak)
And OMG, He didn't eat a cookie! Doesn't it seem like Reid would have grabbed a home-made cookie??
I don't know if this is just recent episodes because I only just now started seeing this.
I know, I know, I'm probaly crazy but I noticed these random things.
