Title: Food

Rach112 - August 5, 2006 02:06 PM (GMT)
I need yummy food ideas! As a vegan I eat either "wierd" food or plain food so I'm in need of ideas!

J.J. - August 5, 2006 03:21 PM (GMT)

What do you mean exactly? Non-vegan? or just more 'creative' vegan dishes???

And do you mean pasta? Chicken? Beef? Fish dishes? hmm... I don't even know of a good website that would help with that... But I do have a pretty good cookbook that I've actually tried some of the dishes. So these are courtesy of Sarah McLachlan's: Plenty

Appetisers:
~ Bruschetta
~ Thai Salad Rolls
~ Spicy Spring Rolls
Main Dishes:
~ Penne Pasta in Balsamic Cream with Caramelised Shallots
~ Black and White Salmon Teriyaki
Deserts:
~ Crème Brulee
~ Bittersweet Chocolate Truffle Cheesecake (If you ever make this, it's the most AMAZING cheesecake ever! You wouldn't even know it was cheesecake it's that rich and decadent)... Heavy on the pocket book as well, but worth it ;)

I on the other hand like to play with very plain recipes and make them my own. I'm partial to pasta dishes :D Like Alfredo (doesn't really matter what you put with it, you can make a nice veggie kind, or add chicken)... Cannelloni with cheese (and I do mean cheese)... There is also BBQ stuff like chicken wings, and burgers, and ribs... What else??

I think it depends on how fancy or informal you want to go. Chicken a la King always sounds so regal, but there really is nothing to it.

Oh someone likes food! :D

I would never have thought of some of those things. I live on fruit and veg though with the occasional pasta thrown in so that's understandable......

I am writing this scene where my character is cooking dinner for someone. I just didn't know what to feed them!

Who's cooking? and for whom?

I almost forgot.... You also have to take the wine choice into consideration... That's totally not my thing, but something else to think about...

Yes, I LOVE to cook!!! It’s relaxing... Put on a good CD if you’re alone, which most of the time I am, and away you go... I don't have a specialty... I grew up on stake and potatoes... Roast beef with Yorkshire pudding, gravy, and veggies is a good winter meal... Anything BBQ for summer works well (Also depends if you're indoors or outdoors and the atmosphere that you're attempting to create)...

The spring rolls are supposed to be a veggie dish, but because of how my family is, I always add a beef.. They take like three hours to make from start to finish, but so worth it... There's something about preparing a meal and everything that goes into it (the whole TLC).

Elle's cooking for Morgan, not in the story I'm busy typing up though! Wine..........oh I'm no wine expert. The Internet however is my friend so I'll check it out. Failing that I have an alcoholic acquiantance I can call.....

By the way, you've really inspired me to learn to cook!

J.J. - August 6, 2006 03:29 PM (GMT)
Elle for Morgan? Sounds very interesting (can also be very sexy if you want to go there).

The basic rule with wine is:
White wine goes with fish and poultry
Red wine goes with red meat

Try this link: https://www.cooking.com/advice/adwinese.asp

It seems the rule has been bent slightly...

This link is good too, it's a nice magazine that has lots of ideas Canadian Living (usually has quite a bit on the subject of food) and Rachel Ray has a site... She does some pretty good dishes on her show (In 30 mins).

My dad taught me how to cook and my grandmother taught me how to bake... So basically I can spend a weekend in the kitchen (if time permits) just making dishes that can be frozen for the week or times when you don't have time to actually cook.... Generally speaking I LOVE to hog the kitchen... Even when I visit my family, I'm always right in there.

And with the baking, seeing that all my friends are guys, I have a endless supply of guinea pigs for cakes and whatnot... Just don't tell them I said that ;)

Rach112 - August 6, 2006 07:23 PM (GMT)
Thanks for the links!

Do I wanna go there? I'll see I guess :D

I just see them together more than anyone else on the show, at least right now and I ship for every TV show I watch. It's like an addiction.

Guinea pigs........what a lovely description! I can't believe all your friends are guys, am I missing out? I just love my girlfriends so much....

J.J. - August 6, 2006 07:40 PM (GMT)
I know that this is going to totally backfire but here goes: I SO dare you to go there ;) Sorry, I'm in an 'odd' mood today, can't imagine why... Perhaps the threat of an Elle/Morgan challenge ;)

I hope the links at least help a bit.

Yep Guinea pigs... As in that's what I call anyone brave enough to try my creations... I'm kidding, I'm not Bridget Jones serving blue soup, congealed gloop and I don't recall what the last dish was... I was, however, going to pull a prank and do that... We'll just have to see if there's enough food colouring in this world ;)
I have yet to send anyone to the hospital, so I'm taking that as a good sign :D

Yep, I'm just one of the guys... For some reason, I always found them easier to get along with (Although they could be one of the reasons why I'm still single)... You should see the stares at the movie theatre when I walk in with the group... It's totally crazy!

Thinking of food there's one thing I have yet to really do... Throw a dinner party. One of my friends had a BBQ, which was really nice, except the fact that I'm not entirely sure the meat was cooked all the way through (and you know you DON'T mess with a guy in his element!).. But no one got sick so that was good. Just your usual fare, chicken wings, burgers, and I think sausages... For me it's more the company... Although if I were to throw a dinner party, it would soooo have to be perfect ;)

Rach112 - August 6, 2006 07:56 PM (GMT)
Oh a dare.......I love dares! Okay I'm going there! This is gonna be fun...........
Now a nice challenge for you.....I'll get back to ya, I'd better make it good.Or maybe I'll be nice...

A dinner party would be nice. You sound like me though, a real perfectionist! God forbid anything goes wrong! :D

I love my female friends for the girly chats about clothes and sex and men in general. However I think friendship with men could be a lot less complicated. I think my brothers have given me a slighlty warped view of guys, I always feel they can't do things as well as I can or they're not responsible enough......I have such high standards! :P

J.J. - August 6, 2006 08:02 PM (GMT)
General entertaining usually goes very well... So I wouldn't think anything too terrible could go wrong... Well if I served something I've never made before, that could cause an issue... But if that were the case, I'm sure the backup plan... Pizza, or Chinese take out, or something like that would do... Or try and see if I could save whatever it was I was serving...

I don't know if I could really be a perfectionist... That's way toooooo much work... I'm pretty down to earth (or at least I think I am ;))

BRING ON THE CHALLENGE! :D

Rach112 - August 6, 2006 09:13 PM (GMT)
Check out J.J.'s fanfics for the challenge! It's a nice one! Get as sexy with them as you like! Oh I can't wait to work on that dare....

J.J. - August 6, 2006 09:29 PM (GMT)
Answer is in the other section ;)

Hmm... Will have to find the right music to set the mood... Then I'll go from there :)

Rach112 - August 6, 2006 09:52 PM (GMT)
Music.......I can listen to a song and have a whole new story idea. I particularly love powerful songs.

Speaking of music, I'm trying to decide what sort of music can be playing in this Elle/Morgan scene....hmm

Am working through my frustrations now the best I can. See, I can see the scene clearly in my head but putting it into words...I still don't have that whole great description thing down.....I am so used to writing in script format and imagining the scene like it would be on TV that my creative writing skills with fan fic stories needs a lot of work.....

J.J. - August 6, 2006 10:52 PM (GMT)
I've never written in script format, so for me description is very important... Trying to get people to 'see it' through words can be hard sometimes... But that's one of my goals.

Can't wait to see this little piece :D
