Title: The infamous GIDEON!

J.J. - July 23, 2006 06:10 PM (GMT)
I'm in the process of writing on a very difficult topic and was wondering what others take on Gideon in terms of sibling(s) that is.

I'm thinking of a sister, maybe a brother as well...Or do you think it was a family of boys? (it's so hard to tell)... HELP ME PLEASE!!

Thanks to all in advance for your help/take on this...

I'm gonna go with one brother and one sister. I don't know why, that's just what I think :)

So which would he be? The eldest? Youngest? Or perhaps the 'trouble maker' ;) ?

I'm thinking the troublemaker... There's this mischievous glint in his eye at times that kinda makes you wonder...

Thanks again :D

I can defnitely see him as being the troublemaker! I'd make him the youngest.

That would sound about right... hmm... VERY interesting....

*Although within the context of the story, it probably won't be 'happy'... but maybe in a later piece... we'll see.

Sounds interesting :)

The little bit that I will eventually be revealing in the next chapter will assist with the reaction he has at the end of the piece. I don't know if it was done intentionally in the episode, but the one where the little girl is kidnapped, Gideon's behaviour and body language indicated to me that there has to be something more. I hope I haven’t jumped too far out of the proverbial box, but you'll see once I finally get it posted. I'm actually debating between posting the next section as a whole, or once more splitting it up so that I get a little more time on the end, but I'm still unsure.

Well, whatever you decide, I look forward to it!

I am really looking forward to reading this one. How is it coming? Did you decide to go with troublemaker, which would have been my vote? :)

beaglebabes: I went with a sister, so far... I don't know if you've come across the story yet, but its call Goodnight My Angel.

My vote has Gideon as quite the trouble maker... He just has this glint in his eye that makes me wonder... (At this point, I don't know if it's a Gideon thing or in actuality a Patinkin thing... Haven't decided).

Here's a brief "profile" of sibling behavior based on where they fall (generally speaking, of course):

Oldest: Often the "parent" of the group - they tend to grow up to be those responsible for others in their businesses and social lives. If in trouble it's of a rebellious nature (parents are often the most hovering concerning their first child and they may feel the need to break away from that, especially as an adolescent) but it rarely carries into adulthood.

Middle: Tend to be the more serious concerning the trouble they make and get into - they often engage in attention-seeking behavior whether positive or negative. How they grow up depends on the amount and type of attention they gained as a child.

Youngest: Most often the "baby" of the group - they tend to take bigger risks in all aspects of life as they're rarely without someone to fall back on - when in trouble it's less likely of the harmful form and more on the side of practical jokes

-- As far as Gideon goes, off hand I'd say eldest but that could just be because he seems to "parent" some of the other BAU members (and is, in fact, the oldest member of the group). But I'm pretty sure you can make any of the positions within the sibiling-group possible. :D

Thanks for the "Reidism" :D

It did occur to me... Only after I thought back to my early high school days when I took a social science course that outlined the traits... However, seeing that in my family (My dad's the youngest of three boys, but seems to have all of the traits of the oldest, some of the middle and very few of what the youngest 'should' have) It kinda blows all of that out of the water when I think about it...

Perhaps the way Gideon is written is that he's supposed to encompass specific traits from each?? I don't know, grasping at straws?...

"Reidism"? Is that a common phrase around here - I'm not entirely up on the lingo. I like that, though - thank you! :D (I'm assuming it's a compliment around here, yes? )

It's really almost impossible to really guess where Gideon stands amongst other possible siblings at this time because, as you mention, he does seem to have a few traits from each of the sibling groups. Prehaps the writers are purposely keeping Gideon's past relatively under wraps - possbily to do some "reveals" later?

Either way, you could see not knowing as an advantage because so many things in a person's childhood could effect later behavior that you could add into your story about Gideon.

Examples:

Were Gideon the youngest but have an ill parent or sibling he may take on the role more typical to the eldest.

Or perhaps Gideon is a middle child but his younger sibling is born many years after so that, through out his childhood, he was "the baby" anyway -- like if he had a sibling 10yrs younger or something.

He could also be one of an even number of children - if this were the case (and especially if he were one of two born close together) it's very likely he could be a bit of everything.

-- There's also the fact that the behaviors associated with the position amongst siblings are generals and most at the BAU are probably "break-the-mold" types :D
