i was watching IFC in toronto today, the show i was watching was called CRIME STORIES, the case was about Robert Hansen , who kidnapped and killed dancers and many girls....in the show, the detective said he called BAU when he couldnt solved the crime. so he talked to JOHN DOUGLAS, so JOHN gave the profile to the detecive on the phone....so the profile was that most likely to me a white male, early 30 to late 40...etc......i get all those parts...but one point i didnt get, was how the profiler knew the unsub had stutter? beucase on the phone the dective only told the environment of crime scens to JOHN.....

I'm obviously not a profiler, so can't give a definitive answer, but I would assume the same way Gideon knew that the Footpath Killer (I think that was his 'press' name) did. I can't remember exactly what he said, I used to have a transcript site I could check on, but it was about the 2nd, 3rd episode of Criminal Minds where he explains it. Actually, it might even be the first episode, where he's giving the profile. Something about the manner of killing, and how the killer wasn't articulate enough, or brave enough, to entice them into his car, or something like that.

The catch was the low self-esteem and the way the footpath killer attacked his victims. He would sneak from behind without even seeing him and do it in isolated areas. That way means that he's either incapable of confronting them or has something that doesn't intimidate people, on the contrary. If it was something physical like limping it would show on the ground in his foot marks. When you stutter you can't even say what you want, let alone saying something threatening under stress. As Gideon says: "I can't (lure them) because I am ashamed of something." Stuttering can't go unnoticed!
