Title: Episode of the week - Week #12
Description: What fresh hell?

OOoops! Guess what I forgot again this week!

I liked this episode. It wasn't one of the most memorable ones but I think I liked it because it was one of those episodes that really made me like Gideon. He always came across as so cold sometimes and this was an episode that made me realize that he really cared so much for the victims (and he was a father figure to Reid) and that is what made me start to really like his character and become one of my favorites.

I also liked the whole question at the end about the father and what was the right thing to do - be a part of his daughter's life even though he knew he was dying or try and protect her and not tell her the truth. It was also interesting how they had to decide to follow the law and risk the girl or bust into the guy's house and make sure the little girl was okay but risk giving the unsub a reason to get off on a lesser charge or something. (that is so aggravating that criminals get away with crimes due to technicalities)

Anyway....A good episode!

Anyone else have any thoughts to add?

I loved Gideon in this episode, and for the very reasons you mentioned. I think we really got a chance to see the paternal side of him. One scene that sticks out in my mind was the hug he gave Reid as they stood by the river, watching the divers pull a young girl's body out of the water.

I also liked the way JJ interacted with the reporter. "Rethink the tie." :D And later on she set him straight when he commented to the parents about the body in the river. JJ is not a wimp!

At one point I wondered if the daughter had been killed and the father would in turn kill the bad guy. He'd attacked another man earlier, and it's not as if he had anything to fear from a death sentence -- he'd already received one from the doctor. I was glad that the ending was happier than that.

It wasn't a fantastic ep, but it was a good one!

Gah, I forgot to watch this episode! I just did it last night.

This is one of my favourite eps. We had a JJ kicks ass scene ("You might wanna rethink that tie."), an adorable plane scene ("Maybe she thinks I'm sweet on her."), and the case was really interesting. It was also a good ep for the Gideon character, but for reasons you guys have already mentioned. And the ending, the girl being in the ceiling, I so did not see that coming. That was crazy.

But I don't understand the title. What Fresh Hell? I don't get it. Can someone explain?

Overall, great ep. ;)

I'm such a ditz, I watched next week's eppy instead   But I seem to recall I quite liked this one ;)

It's a great Gideon eppy for the reasons you all pointed out. When I think of this episode I immediatley attatch it to his character.

I like the plane scene but I prefer the scene where Garcia goes to thank Gideon for the flowers. It's so obvious he didn't send them but she's clearly so thrilled  Slightly off topic here but when Garcia is with Gideon she tends to annoy me a lot. Anyone else feel like that? ;)

Gotta love JJ! I admit I underestimated her a bit back then, I thought she might just spill something ;)

I don't remember whether Billie found out her father was dying. Did she?

They didn't show us that the parents told Billie that her father's cancer had returned. I don't know if it was implied that they would or not. I sort of thought so until they were talking about it in the end on the plane and then I wasn't sure.

I didn't get the title either. Most of them seem to have some sort of double-play meaning on words but if this one did, it's over my head. <_<

That's a nod to Dorothy Parker. She was a writer, a poet, and a member of the notoriouis Algonquin Round Table. One of her oft-repeated phrases was, "What fresh hell is this?" Heh...I've used it myself on more that one occasion. ;)

Parker wrote one of my all-time favorite short stories, "The Waltz." It's a hoot!

As to why the quote was used for that specific episode, I have no idea. Perhaps it was because the family had been through so much already (the dad's first bout with cancer, the divorce). The daughter's kidnapping was yet another horrible thing to be endured, a "fresh hell" of sorts.
