Title: I don't know what the heck to do.
Description: About my job.

Matthew*GG*Fan - March 17, 2008 01:31 PM (GMT)
Basically, my boss has been going against our written agreement in that he's been changing my shifts without my mutual consent (which our written agreement said there MUST be before ANY changes) and I've been getting in trouble because of it. That and my bosses can be just mean sometimes.

So today, this happens:

I got there this morning to find that my boss has now changed my Friday shifts, AGAIN without mutual consent or letting me know at all. Lucky I checked the roster, eh? So I put it in my mind to speak to them about them changing my shifts without mutual consent and other shift clashes.

Then, one girl goes home early because she's sick, so the boss asks me if I can take the rest of her shift, i.e. until 4. I said I can't because I have to catch the bus to my other job at 3:30, so I agreed to work until 2.

For the rest of the day the boss and I are heavily snowed under because we're understaffed and the boss is getting sh*tty because of it. I'm left thinking, hey, it's not my fault you don't have any backup staff!

Then, right at the end of my extended shift, I finished serving at 2:05, i.e. five minutes longer than I agreed to stay. Because the bosses were still so snowed under I said to one of them that I'd finish a certain job for him before I left. What do I get in return? "Yeah, whatever." Um, excuse ME?! I just stayed an extra HOUR AND TEN MINUTES for you, and that's all I get in return?!?!

THEN, after I'd done said job, I apologized (APOLOGISED!) to the other boss for not being able to stay until 4, but explained that I really had to leave. What did I get from HER in return? "Well, that’s what happens when you have two jobs." Um, EXCUSE ME?!?!?! Since when are YOU my first priority?!

I never got to talk to them about those aforementioned shifts. Basically everything I hate about the job happened at once today and I'm just sick of it. I'm almost crying right now, I don't know why. And I don't know why I can't just talk to my bosses about it but when I go to I just sieze up and can't do it. It's like I'm scared of them and I don't know why, I've got no reason to be, what are they gonna do? And all my parents say is, "Just get over it, you'll have to someday, just talk to them, you have to, just do it", and I keep telling them I can't.

I don't know what to do. I don't know if or how I should talk to my bosses, or if I should quit, or if I should just grin and bear it... I want to talk to them and just sort it all out but I'm scared of what to say and what they'll say and what'll happen.

I don't want to work tomorrow but I have to. Hell, I don't want to work there at all right now. I just wish i had enough spine to stick up for myself to an employer whose not even worth half of what I am.

I hate how they treat me. I hate parts of the job. I hate them changing my shifts without telling me (like they're supposed to) and then them getting sh*tty with me when I don't turn up for a shift I don't know about. I hate all of my shifts now being morning shifts. I just don't know what the hell to do.

Just... argh.

First of all, *HUGS*. I'm sorry, that really sucks! Sometimes employers can be jerks. The big thing you have to consider here is how often are they jerks? If they just have off days or whatever, then that's no big; everybody does. But if it's a constant thing then maybe you should think about quitting.

But you also need to consider how long you've been working there. If it hasn't been that long, then quitting probably isn't in your best interests, because other employers in the future will see that and go, "What did you do wrong there?"

Why are you working two jobs? Is it necessary? If you really don't care about keeping this one, and your other boss isn't a jerk, then maybe you should quit. There's no reason you should have to put up with this, but like I said, if it's not a repetitive thing then quitting would be stupid because no job is perfect, y'know?

I might not be making sense or saying anything relatively important, so I'll shut up now.

Good luck though! I hope the situation works out for you. ;)

No, that made perfect sense, thanks.

In answer to a few of your queries, a. I've been working there about three months, b. it's not an off day thing but it's not exactly repetative either, they just get really sh*tty when the tiniest thing goes wrong, and c. I've got the two jobs 'cause I'm trying to save up to go overseas.

I spoke to them today about getting the shifts off that I need and about them changing shifts without asking me and so far it's all sorted. They're pretty T.O.'d at me, but I don't care. If they're gonna get p'd off at the tiniest things, it's not my problem. For now, I'll just ignore it and keep taking $230 woth of pay each week off their hands. :)

First of all, hugz!
And second of all, they have an obligation to honour there agreements to you, so if they don't, tell them! If they're being so…%$%^ then well, talk about it with them, it's scary, but it's the only way to try to work there and have fun…

So good you talked to them, I hope now it will go better.

They do pay good :) B)

sending big hugs your way :) I hope things with your job will get better... Hopefully your boss will listen to your concerns and not make any more changes with your schedule without checking with you first.

Thanks so much guys! My boss gave me a letter today saying he's given me the two days off I needed so I can spend time with my family on holiday (even though I'm technically not supposed to have them off), so that's great.

I'm still not overly thrilled with the job, so I've applied for another one which really suits me. I hope I get it, and if I do, I'll probably quit this one. :)

I really hope you get the job!

Big hugs :D

Sorry to hear about your problems at work! :( Is that like a requirement or something these days?.....make sure every job is understaffed and management is rude (or clueless) and make employees as unhappy as possible?

Hopefully the other job will work out. If not, I don't think it's wrong to point out to them that they really need to tell you about changes in the schedule. (Be polite and respectful of course)

Hang in there! :)
