Title: Episode of the week - Week #1
Description: Extreme aggressor

I love this show! - January 7, 2008 12:30 PM (GMT)
Okay! So Christmas is over, and I'm ready to dive back into the old season one episodes. :)

I watched Extreme aggressor (actually a couple of times. Once with my sister and once with my niece over Christmas break) and then I listened to the commentary. I remember why I fell in love with this show! Season one was SO great! But I can already tell I'm going to miss Gideon and Elle so much! And Reid!!! Oh....I love Reid in season one!!

So the episode itself. So good! We got our introduction to all the characters. Gideon - being haunted by his decision that got his FBI guys killed by the bomber but now coming back into the field. Reid (so sweet and funny and awkward and adorable) in the pilot he seemed to work with Gideon at the academy....was the "team" not really established? He calls Gideon "boss" and says that medical leave is over. Morgan - interesting that he says he was supposed to be with Gideon in Boston when the bomb thing happened (wish they would have explained why he wasn't) Hotch - the family man always being interrupted by work. Elle - not even in the BAU yet. Garcia - only one scene - but a cute one! And no JJ.

The unsub was creepy! He did a really good job. The story was interesting and suspenseful....it was a really good pilot.

Listening to the commentary I learned a few things. It was not raining in Vancouver (which is where they filmed it) and all the rain and clouds in the beginning were edited in. The quotes - they were originally lines of dialog but it was too long so they did the voice-over thing and kept it with one in opening and one in the ending. It was really sad to hear them go on and on about how great Mandy was (now knowing how he left the show) There is no "extreme aggressor" and the song wasn't on that Metallica CD (they liked the cover) The book Gideon wrote the unsub had......half the pages are blank as he's thumbing through it! Garcia wasn't intended to be in the regular cast (and Kirsten was hired on Friday and she filmed her scenes on Monday) And she and Shemar hardly ever film their scenes together! I also thought it was interesting that Garcia's character was originally supposed to be a man and Hotch was written as a Morman in the beginning. And last but not least.....the guy who played the unsub in the convienience store with the gun.....he was almost Reid!

So I enjoyed watching it again very much!

What did everyone else think?

CalleighElleDakota - January 7, 2008 02:05 PM (GMT)
So I re-watched the pilot once again...

We were intoduced with the expression "UnSub" - Unknown Subject as word for the criminal.

We also found out how smart Reid is and it was eplained what the "Reid effect" is.

Unfortunately no JJ, and only a bit Garcia...

Furthermore we learned that Haley tried to talk Hotch into calling their son "Gideon" - which means mighty worrier and that he had worked for two years in Seattle.

We get the impression that Morgan and Elle know each other somehow, and it's obvious that Elle wants to work with the BAU at all costs...

(I bet the next few weeks are going to be a lot of fun!) B)

I never really 'loved' this episode. Not sure why, just never did. But, I did like how they 'gently' introduced the characters, without A) Telling us too much, and B) Telling us too little.

I knew that the Metallica CD wasn't right, purely because I like a few of their songs, and sat there and thought 'That's not the right album!' lol, but it makes me smile. I also love that Garcia was gonna be a man! It makes me want to see the same scenes, but with Morgan talking to Garcia the Man!

They went to a lot of work to make it rain, which I think it's cute, as it shows that they do have a 'vision' if ya like before they start filming. I also love how the commentry isn't as 'structured' as the others-lots of laughing, lots of joking etc.

I never knew about the giant magnet under the floor. How strange! lol, 'Thomas Gibson is a very straight guy'-I should hope so! :D

I did like the shots in this though, the fact that they varied the shots. Made the whole episode 'work'. Plus, I didn't realise how much work went into just one episode. I just thought it was build the set, take the shots, edit, and print. It's amazing how much they went into.

I never realised that the other page in the book was blank! It's so obvious when it was pointed out, but I never noticed it! lol, *doi*

What I wanna know, is how Elle and Morgan knew each other, because it definetly looks like they had prior knowledge of each other.

I like how we find out a little about each character, and how we find out small details and things-Morgan gets into peoples minds by 'being' them; Hotch was once in Seattle, he's a family guy; Gideon was a lecturur, had a mental break, perhaps doesn't have his full trust of his collegues, Reid being the shy, akward genius, younger than the others; Elle being fiesty, background in sex-crimes, perhaps knew Morgan; Garcia being the 'fun' one. We also got a few good questions going, which is quite good, it means you start to 'profile' the characters-Did Elle know Morgan before?; Was the team established?; Do Morgan and Gideon get on?; If the team wasn't established, how did everyone know each other?

Looking at the last scene, I love how it's done. The way Gideon just looks at the guy behind the counter, and then walks out, with the slow shot and everything. Awesome!

JJ_16 - January 7, 2008 08:58 PM (GMT)
I have to admit my favorite moment in this one was when Morgan said to Elle "Next time show a little leg" and she says "Morgan the only time you're gonna see a little leg from me is when i'm about to kick your a**." as soon as she said that i knew i was gonna like Elle. judging from this scene it seems like they already knew each other a little.

I love this show! - January 7, 2008 10:52 PM (GMT)
Still one of my favorite quotes is in the pilot......the whole Yoda quote. The look on Gideon's face is too funny.

I hadn't ever thought about how Elle and Morgan must have known each other before. And it is interesting that they weren't really a "team" yet but Reid worked with Gideon and apparently Hotch and Morgan worked with Gideon before too since they all knew each other.

I think they did a great job introducing us to the characters and what their job was.

And I've always liked the special effects of going from a picture into that scene and how they talk through what their unsub is like and what he does while they're in the scene too talking about it. Very cool.

I watched this episode again today and it’s one of those episodes I love more and more each time. I remember when I first saw this episode, I thought it was pretty good but nothing amazing but now this is one of my favourite episodes. It was so much fun re-watching this considering how much we now know about the characters and seeing how much they’ve developed.

I miss Elle! She brought so much to the show, I just know I’m going to miss her more and more as we go through the episodes. And Gideon…I missed JJ in this episode too!

The plot is really good, it had me gripped from the start. The unsub was so creepy and it really got to me because the victim was so normal. When she got into the car and he didn’t take the turn off…remind me never to take test drives with strangers! And when they did the nail scene, how horrible :( It was pretty disturbing.

Elle’s appearance is one of my favourite moments. When I found out she was in the show I just automatically assumed she would already be on the team but it made it more interesting for her to start out as an outsider. Isn’t Elle miss feisty! Love her and her impatience, great scenes with her and Gideon. She definitely deserved her place on the team.

Elle and Morgan must have known each other! They just seem far too comfortable and at ease with one another to have just met. If they’re around the same age, maybe they went to Quantic together? Or they’ve worked together in the past? Stephanie, I love that scene too where she tells him the only time he’ll see her legs is when she’s kicking his ass! So Elle…

When I saw Reid’s hair I shrieked. Oh my gosh, he looked so innocent! And spraying Mandy’s hair to cover the bald patch..amusing! Shemar was ten times hotter in those suits and Hotch looks so much younger! And he’s more cheery too, his character seems a lot lighter. Aww, Haley and Hotch were so happy then….

I loved the commentary, it was so great to learn more about the pilot. I really thought it was Seattle! They obviously love Mandy and he is so awesome in this episode, he’s probably my favourite character in this episode actually. Hotch a Mormon with blue eyes and blond hair? No way! And thank god they added Kirsten to the cast. I didn’t realise Kirsten and Shemar didn’t film their scenes together, although I guess it makes sense. TG..a very straight man. Everytime I hear that “not a chance” line now, I’m gonna laugh!

It was definitely a great intro to the characters. Nerdy Reid, troubled Gideon, family man Hotch and ladies man Morgan…I am certainly very grateful they have a female profiler on the team and that JJ and Garcia are around a lot because it was weird for me watching just the guys.

I didn’t interpret it as Reid working with Gideon at the academy, I just thought he has been sent to inform Gideon they had a case ;) The team obviously worked differently then. I too wish they had explained why Morgan wasn’t in Boston. He and Gideon certainly seem to have their issues, Morgan’s trust issues make sense now but when I first saw this I wondered what his problem was!

I can’t remember if this has already been established but before Boston and the medical leave, was Gideon unit chief? Did Hotch just take over after the incident? Gideon certainly seems like the main man in this episode. I always assumed they were a team long before the pilot otherwise how are they all so familiar with one another?

I love the scene with Reid spinning on the chair. I don’t know why, I just do! And when he’s being barked at by the dog, he’s adorable! And the Samuel Beckett/Yoda quote is another amusing moment. I fell in love with Reid all over again in this episode!

I hope everyone else had as much fun watching this as I did.

Wait, isn't the "show a little leg" scene in Complusion? When they're interviewing all the girls named Karen?

It didn't surprise me that it was filmed in Vancouver (tons of TV pilots are filmed there. It's cheaper), but it did surprise me that they had to make the clouds and the rain, because I'm pretty sure BC sees its fair share of rain. ;)

Garcia as a man...no way, she's one of the best parts of the show! She wouldn't work as a man. But did any of you notice how conservative her clothes were in the pilot? Again, I haven't seen all of the eps, but I know she wears wackier stuff now than she did in this ep....me thinks it may have been a 'don't scare off the audience' thing.

I haven't seen the big ep that deals with Adrian Bale yet, so I don't know the entire story with Gideon, but I have an idea of what happened, and this is the impression I got: Gideon led the BAU, then his team was murdered, so he had a nervous breakdown. At this point Hotch took over, and the other spots on the team had to be refilled. Gideon eventually came back but not to the unit, to lecturing. Then somebody important wanted him on the Seattle case. Hotch is still heading up the unit, because they can't just demote him when Gideon comes back, and because the aforementioned important person is not certain that Gideon is ready, and wants Hotch to figure that out. There is still one spot on the team that has not been filled, and that's what Elle was talking about.

That's the way I took it, anyway. I too got the impression Elle and Morgan know each other, but I'm not sure how...You'd think that since Hotch used to work there she'd have a better chance of knowing him...

And oh my gosh, that other guy COULD NOT play Reid!!! He's so not geeky! He's just dirty! MGG is just right for the role, thank you very much.

Oh, and about Mandy's bald spot. Y'know how they said they sprayed it? Well, they did, but only in that scene in the lecture hall. Look closely at the scene where he's talking to the unsub in his house. Look very very closely...it's covered up!

Anyway, this wasn't my favourite episode, but it was a good introduction. Looking forward to watching the next couple. ;)

I think the only reason why I got the idea they worked together is because Reid calls Gideon "boss" - that would have to mean at the very least he worked under him before....I guess he could have just come to the academy to inform him of a case but since he also said "medical leave's over" - I just got the impression he was closer to Gideon than anyone else on the team and probably still worked with him.

Rach112 - January 8, 2008 01:24 AM (GMT)
I can never imagine Gideon running the BAU. Him doing what Hotch does, all that official stuff? It just doesn't seem very Gideon ;)

I love this show! - January 8, 2008 02:10 AM (GMT)
That's true! Gideon always seemed too emotional...too caught up in his own thoughts and theories to be keeping track of what everyone else was doing too. He was the top profiler but Hotch is a better unit chief.

i watched it again last weekend! Ah, nice nice one! I wish reid didnt change so much!

and i agree, they should tell us why morgan wasnt there when the bombing thing happened.

i love love the yoda quote thing too. Gideon's reaction is just priceless and when he figured out that there were 2 unsubs, and he smiled like that, ahh, I miss him! I especially love the zoom in at the end when he saw and heard the gun of the stuttering unsub.

i listened to the commentary and couldnt believe all those cloud and rain were fake! it made me realise how much effort goes into just a single episode.

and the unsub is just freaky. the skinnier one. "im a fan of yours" ?? if i was in gideon's place, i'd be freaked outt and i definitely wont be able to stare at the unsub like that. He has this sinister smile every time.

And what I found funny about the guy that played Richard (the skinny unsub) they said he's a very popular actor in the area but he usually plays comedy roles!

I don't know about that but he plays "creepy" very well!!!

I think season one has been my favorite thus far. I really hope that the writers -- when they head back to work -- find a way to get the show back to that special place.

I was curious about that myself. How long had Gideon been on leave, anyway? Before the leave, had he been in the same position he held when he returned? Maybe that's why Reid called him boss. It's rather confusing.

QUOTE
It was really sad to hear them go on and on about how great Mandy was (now knowing how he left the show)

I recently saw footage of an interview with MP, during which he let it be known that he wasn't comfortable with the level of violent content on television. Maybe that was at the root of his decision to leave.

QUOTE
Hotch was written as a Morman in the beginning.

Um.....okay, that's just odd.

LOL! He did look like he needed a good scrubbing, didn't he?

The actor who portrayed the unsub at the end was Lukas Haas. Most people remember him best as the little Amish boy in Witness (Harrison Ford), though he also appeared in films such as Mars Attacks! and Lady in White. In fact, he has an acting resume that's longer than some actors who have been in the business twice as long.

My personal favorite was his role in the movie Testament. It was probably one of the best nuclear-war-scare dramas ever made, and his part was heart-breaking.
