Title: Languages
CriminalMind - January 3, 2008 07:02 PM (GMT)
This is actually bought about by the 'Dutch Topic' as I'm curious to know which languages everyone speaks now! :D
I can't speak any bar English fluently. I can do pretty well in German and French, and BSL (British Sign Language).
I can speak small amounts in Russian, Italien, Welsh, Spanish, but barely enough to have a conversation.
Rach112 - January 3, 2008 07:12 PM (GMT)
I can do small amounts of Russian, I haven't been having lessons that long yet. I know some basics in Chinese, lol the lessons are crazy hard!
I have a GCSE in German & I did French for about 5 years but I think I'd need a refresher course now!
I know a tiny bit of Spanish...Obviously I'm fluent in English although my teacher would kill me if she saw some of my grammar etc on this board !
I can't wait till I'm actually living in other countries so I can do some proper language learning :)
CM Addict - January 3, 2008 07:52 PM (GMT)
I wish I was fluent in more than one language, it's an impressive skill to have.
I took French in school for seven years, but when I try to understand people talking in it my most common reponse is, "Je ne comprend pas."  They speak way too fast!
CriminalMind - January 3, 2008 08:04 PM (GMT)
Yeah, I'd love to travel to loads of different countris, and learn loads of languages. It's one of my NYRs actually, to learn a language, so here's hoping!
Yeah, i can do very rough stuff in Chineese and Japaneese, but it's very poor, as I only did, like, a 10 week course on it.
***<Marta>*** - January 3, 2008 08:39 PM (GMT)
I'm italian and I can speak only a bit of english!
JulieFan - January 3, 2008 10:12 PM (GMT)
Dutch is my mother tongue but I can speak/write English just as good. :)
Then I had German, French and Spanish lessons at school. So I'm not fluent, but I can talk a bit.
CalleighElleDakota - January 4, 2008 09:41 AM (GMT)
English (duh), Spanish (which I spoke fluently once) and German... B)
Luna - January 4, 2008 11:18 AM (GMT)
English  (I was so proud, my teacher said I had to best pronancation of the class! but my writing kinda sucks <_< )
Spanish
Dutch
French (but with a lot of mistakes and some pointing)
German (but with also the pointing and well grammar…horrible)
Italian (but more understanding then speaking it myself, but do understand it all, when I speak back I use a lot of Spanish in it)
Latin…but that really isn't something I'll ever be able to use
What do I want to learn:
Arabic
African, which looks a lot like Dutch, so that would be easy I hope
Manderin
I had three years of ancient Greek, I want somewhere in my life take more classes untill I finally feel like I manage the language.
New Greek
Hebrew, they have hebrew classes at my school as an after school program, maybe I should go…
signlanguage…but I don't know if it's better for me to learn the Dutch signlanguage, the english, spanish, french…it would be easier if there was just one
huuudaaa - January 4, 2008 12:10 PM (GMT)
woah. you guys speak a lott of languages!
I'm fluent in English, Malay and Arabic (yes, like emily. only her pronunciation is a bit wrong :P ). But we'll see how bad or good i really am in those when i do my GCSE Os. Ive never been good in languages - i'd rather maths :D
i can understand and possibly speak simple hindi (because i've watched gazillionssss bollywood movie) and i know basic words in mandarin. well, i do know a lot of swear words
i need to learn mandarin, but i wanttt to learn french/spanish/italian! They sound exotic.

I'd love to learn sign language. Of course I'm not usually around people that use it, so it would probably be hard to maintain, but every so often you come across someone who's deaf and in those instances I really wish I knew it!
Plus, the bonus it has over French, you don't have to worry about pronounciation. When I took French we had three exams: oral, listening, and written. That's what I always hated. With ASL, there obviously wouldn't be a written, and you can't really "listen" to sign language, it's more "watching", so the other two would probably be combined into one. Much easier.
Luna - January 4, 2008 08:17 PM (GMT)
Yeah the hard thing about French is that, well I can understand what they're writing, can manage the speaking, but sometimes they talk sooooo fast, that I'm like 'Take a breath' or well 'lentement si vous plaît! Je ne pouvez pas comprendent que vou avez dit, quand vous parlez avec ce tempo.'
But it's a beautiful language ;)
huuudaaa - January 5, 2008 02:07 AM (GMT)
the only french word i know is merci -at least i think that's french :ph43r:
i have a card that has pictures of hands doing the alphabets, and i think i got it already. if im not mistaken it's BSL. so far i know the words 'sorry', tissue, paper, and some swear words
not that i purposely search for the swear words.. a friend taught me and i was happy to learn :D
linny - January 5, 2008 04:36 AM (GMT)
Swedish
English
Norwegian (I do well)
Danish (not fluently by a mile)
French (studying and I hate it)
I've found out that I can read somewhat in Dutch, Icelandic and German. Put I wouldn't push it too far :P Hoping to start studying Chinese next year.
Telia - January 5, 2008 01:03 PM (GMT)
I can speak french (of course :P), english and a very very little spanish. I studied spanish at school, but I always found that too complicated... And they speak too fast, it's really impressive
I know a few words in german, because my grandfather was german during few years when he was young and sometimes he speaks german but I don't understand :D
It's the same thing for italian : My grandmothers are italian and they love to speak to me in italian or translate italian songs ^_^
I really want to learn sign language, I don't know why, it's just one of the things that I want to do in my life...

Yep. It means thank you. And my mom, gotta love her, everytime I say Merci she goes, "Bienvenue"
Bienvenue means welcome as in welcome to my home. You're welcome, what she mean to say, is de rien. I tell her that everytime she says bienvenue, but she still does it! Which is funny because she's done just as much if not more French than I have.
Telia, I've never gotten the chance to try spanish, but I've seen people use it online and stuff, and I recognize a lot of the words as being similar to french. I'd think it wouldn't be too hard if you were fluent in french....

Spanish, French and English.
I learnt some German last year, but I can´t say I´m fluent in German (I want to study a little more this summer, self-taught-alike, cause I have the books, the dicctionnary and all that)
And I want to look for some Italian online course... It´s pretty similar to Spanish, it shouldn´t be too much hard to learn xD
I LOVE French. But We DON´T speak so fast.
Ok, maybe we do xD
CM Addict - January 6, 2008 09:40 PM (GMT)
It's not like they purposely speak fast. It's just 'cause some words have to be drawn together, so they sort of sound like one, and then it takes less time to get through what you're trying to say. ;) I can't do that though....
Mandarina, self-taught, that's impressive. I'd NEVER be able to do that for any language.
Mandarina - January 6, 2008 09:53 PM (GMT)
He, he, I hope I will be able to try, but just because I already know a tiny little bit xD I mean German, cause it´s difficult like whoa, at least for me. Italian... everyone says it´s really similar to Spanish, so I hope it won´t be so hard. But, if it is, I think I will give it up xD
BlackNight - January 6, 2008 10:07 PM (GMT)
I speak French because i'm french lol, and English, that's all.
But my english is not perfect :s
Voici une blague :
Comment appelle t-on quelqu'un qui parle 3 langues? un Trilingue
Comment appelle t-on quelqu'un qui parle 2 langues? un Bilingue
Et enfin comment appelle t-on quelqu'un qui parle 1 langue? un Français
je pense que ça nous définie parfaitement
-------------------------
Here one jokes :
How calls one someone that speaks 3 languages? a Trilingual
How calls one someone that speaks 2 languages? a Bilingual
How calls one someone that speaks 1 language? a French
I think we are very well defined
--------------------------
The french is very difficult to learn, there is a lot of rules. Even me, I am not talking about a perfect french
Kyle - January 7, 2008 07:00 AM (GMT)
I can speak fluent English(obviously!) and can do very well in French and Spanish! Mi espanol es mal porque yo hablo haga persones! sin embargo mi espanol es merjorando!
I SPEAK spanish REALLY good though.. Like just a tiny accent!! I can also read it very fast! however, I still can not understand it very well. There are a lot of cognates though that makes it pretty easy to understand at times. :)
I would like to learn arabic and hebrew. i already know some of the basics in arabic(ESPECIALLY religious terms, for what reason i do not know!) I like hebrew because it is really poetic and is just really nice!
i also want to become fluent in chinese, because english teachers in china get paid very well lol! plus they are becomming a super power, so we might as well prepare ourselves! also, italian sounds nice. :)
CM Addict - January 8, 2008 12:00 AM (GMT)
I have a question for all of you that are fluent in two or more languages. This is something I've wondered for a long time: If you're conversing in your second language, when someone says something to you, do you translate it in your head back to your mother tongue, and then translate your response back to the language you're speaking in? I hope I worded that in a way that makes sense...It's just I was wondering if people can be spoken to in another language and create their response without using their original language, the one they're most comfortable in.
Rach112 - January 8, 2008 12:07 AM (GMT)
For me personally, if someone asks me a question in German I think of the answer in German. It's automatic, I was always taught never to think in a different language to the one I'm speaking. I found with a lot of languages you can't really translate accurately between the two so it's better just to think and speak in one language at a time!
Hallondrake - January 8, 2008 01:01 AM (GMT)
I speak swedish and english. Very little spanish and understands norwegian, written danish (and some spoken).
Luna - January 8, 2008 09:08 AM (GMT)
I'm very bad at translating (and spelling, but that has to do with another reason), so I hardly ever translate also languages that don't come natural to me, I can speak Spanish since the age of three (before that I did understand it, but I didn't see the need to also answer in Spanish) so I think in Spanish sometimes, the same with English, my toughts are in English when I'm talking english.
(which is pretty often 'cause my sister and I always speak English against eachother, we always start with Dutch and a couple of minutes later my mom says: "You've secrets for me don't you." (my mom doesn't speak english very well ;) )
JulieFan - January 8, 2008 03:13 PM (GMT)
Weird tot think about it like that!
When I talk/write English, I just talk English, I don't have to think, I just know what to say and what to write. It's automatic, I don't have to think about what the words are they just come as I type
CriminalMind - January 8, 2008 07:11 PM (GMT)
I tend to do a bit of translating. Most of the time I know the answer, but I do think of the sentence in English, and translate it, to check I'm right. I'm not sure how I actually do it, but I just sorta...do, lol
Kyle - January 9, 2008 06:16 AM (GMT)
To people who speak English as a second language - I know that English is technically a Germanic language(due to our sentence structures.) But 58% of our VOCABULARY WORDS come from French or Latin. When we talk, does it sound like French or Latin, or what language does it sound close to?
Example: Spanish sounds like Italian. Dutch sounds like German. So what does English sound like?!
JulieFan - January 9, 2008 02:08 PM (GMT)
To me it just sounds like English, not like another language or something :P
huuudaaa - January 9, 2008 03:10 PM (GMT)
i have to translate arabic in my head, then translate my reply from eng to arab back. but im getting used to it. The brain works faster the more you use it =)
umkin an atakallam bil lughatil arabiyy, wa laakin laisa bi jayyid - I can speak arabic, but not that good.
i forgot what Criminal is in Arab, but i know mind is " 'Aaqil "
And hot is Harr. So it's like, Reid is Harrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr! XD

According to my spanish cousin Dutch sounds like English (she speak neither btw) ;)
Mandarina - January 10, 2008 11:40 PM (GMT)
I don´t think Dutch sounds like English, it sounds like German to me.
I don´t think Spanish sounds like Italian, French or Portuguese, for example. But the vocabulary and the grammar are "similar" cuase they are Latin languages. Nevertheless, the pronunciation and the intonation are pretty different (for example, French and German pronunciation are more similar to me).
I don´t translate French or English into Spanish, but, when I study more French than English, I´m prone to translate French into English, and when I study more English than French, viceversa.
CM Addict - January 10, 2008 11:46 PM (GMT)
^Cool. I think for me, one of my many problems with French was that I would think to myself, "What's the word for [whatever]?" and I didn't force myself to do it solely in French.
Although, I used to speak French in my English class (not fluently, just a couple sentences), and English in my French class!
Rach112 - January 10, 2008 11:57 PM (GMT)
I have a Russian exam approaching :o Crap, I don't think being able to say my name and ask for directions will do me much good! I need to get those books out! Thank gosh it's not a hard language to speak...
I once spoke German in a French exam  Not good...
paolafromparis - January 11, 2008 09:26 PM (GMT)
I'm a Hyperpolyglot. I'm Italian, I live in France, I am fluent English, Spanish, Modern Hebrew, Chinese Mandarin and Poruguese.
er...yes, I'm a genius.

I've been reading it very quickly because I'm at work, it is a goodbye, but he does not says if she is dead or not. he is talking about this "trip", says to go to lthis trip you need to be brave, then he talks about remembering and finishes up telling that he prefer to think they left each other because of a lucky meeting ... I think she is dead, though. I will watch it again and translate it for you at home if you want.
JulieFan - January 12, 2008 08:01 PM (GMT)
Thank you very much! I was wondering about it very long!
