Title: Writer's strike
Description: What affect will it have on the show?

I love this show! - November 5, 2007 10:44 PM (GMT)
Well, I heard TV writers went on strike today. The last strike they had lasted five months! I know CM is usually about seven episodes ahead so we've got a few weeks of new episodes still but if it lasts.......???

What happens to actors and the rest of the crew when the writers go on strike? Are they forced to go without a job temporarily too?

Rach112 - November 5, 2007 10:51 PM (GMT)
Oh, I've never heard of writers going on strike! Why has this happened? Let's hope it doesn't last too long. I wonder if they just bring temporary writers in to replace the ones on strike...

I love this show! - November 5, 2007 10:54 PM (GMT)
I know they're striking because they aren't getting any royalties on DVD's or episodes sold on the internet. I don't know all the arguements but it sounds like they should make some money off that.....that's their stories that are being sold.

I don't know if they have temp writers or anyone to pick up the slack in the meantime.

J.J. - November 6, 2007 12:27 AM (GMT)
I heard about that as well... In the mean time CM could hire a bunch of the people who write the fanfic (I think a lot of their stories are just as good, if not in some cases, better)...

Well they say that you won't notice until what? Sometime in January or so for big shows like CM, CSI etc... You'll notice it with Jay Leno and other talk shows, but that's just what I heard on the radio this morning (99.9 Mix TO)... I suppose we'll have to wait and see... They did say that CM was what? 7 episodes in when Patinkin pulled out and they were being re-worked... Perhaps they were and now they will have enough material to work with till whenever... The buzz on the radio was like: no one in Canada would strike this time of year... Cold weather and lurking snow would really suck... There's nothing like sunshine and coffee...

I think it's only fair that they get something... But that's just me, I suppose... Don't the actors get something for syndication and DVDs, etc?

ac5000 - November 6, 2007 12:36 AM (GMT)
im sure actors get something for syndication and DVD's and stuff. The smart companies have already ordered many more scripts before the strike goes on. I know that Chuck has ordered a few more already...

Special Agent Jentzer - November 6, 2007 06:00 AM (GMT)
from the scripts/sides, criminal minds has the following episodes "planned"...maybe....ish

11/7/07 #306 Identity

11/14/07 #307 Lucky

11/21/07 #308 Penelope

11/28/07 #309 True Night

12/12/07 #310 Birthright

01/2008 (?) #311 Second Life

01/2008 (?) #312 Limelight

Special Agent Jentzer - November 6, 2007 06:06 AM (GMT)

“You guys will still break stories, right?”

“Your people can still write scripts. I mean, who would know?”

We would.

We would know that doing so undermines the very cause for which we’re fighting. We would know that it sends the wrong message to those who honor our picket lines.

We would know that it only serves to prolong a strike.

So, just to be absolutely clear: In the event of a strike, we, the following showrunners, will do no writing and no story breaking — nor will any be asked of our writing staffs — until we get a deal.

Edward Allen Bernero

**sorry for the double post, two issues..lol**

They have aired 6 episodes to date and we just got word that they can deliver 12 total episodes for this season.

This site has info on a lot of shows....about how many more epis planned etc....in case this drags on.... :(

I love this show! - November 7, 2007 03:09 AM (GMT)
Half a season is better than none. TV is going to get really boring with no new episodes anywhere. We'll have news, games shows and American Idol????

ILoveReed1988 - November 7, 2007 03:13 AM (GMT)
i mean the writers have a right to have a strike

Special Agent Jentzer - November 7, 2007 03:14 AM (GMT)

• Overall: In general, returning series will have between 10 and 15 new episodes that will take them into January before they disappear or go into repeats. (The series can shoot any script that was completed before the writers went on strike.)

• ABC: Like all the other networks, ABC has loaded up on reality shows. (Its biggest reality hit - "Dancing With the Stars" - has guild writers, but producers have decided to go ahead without them.) That includes new episodes of "Wife Swap" and "Supernanny," plus the new "Dancing" spinoff, "Dance Wars."

• CBS: The network benefits from the fact that its crime shows - "CSI," "NCIS," "Criminal Minds" - do quite well in reruns. It also has "The Amazing Race" (which started Sunday), plus a new cycle of "Survivor." "Big Brother" may come back early, and such quiz shows as "Power of 10" and new version of "Password" are either ready to go or can be produced quickly.

• NBC: Things are likely to go from bad to worse for the network. It may end up relying heavily on the "Law & Order" franchise with new episodes of the mother ship (held until midseason) and repeats of "Law & Order: Criminal Intent" (which has been airing on USA). It also has new hours of "Medium."

ILoveReed1988 - November 7, 2007 03:17 AM (GMT)
hhhhmmm...soo they will get in reruns!

I love this show! - November 7, 2007 03:19 AM (GMT)
Maybe more people will discover CM in reruns? It does sound like CBS is better off than some of the other networks.

ILoveReed1988 - November 7, 2007 03:21 AM (GMT)
well CM is good no matter in reruns or not..all the tv shows are in trouble!

Kyle - November 7, 2007 03:25 AM (GMT)
I heard about this today, but did not realize that Bernero was participating!!

So basically, these people are refusing to do their jobs until some things change?

Ah, well I am pretty sure that CBS will conform to their wishes and all will be well. I mean there are soooo many shows that could be affected. I doubt they will let that happen!

I am a bit disappointed that these people, probably millionaires, complain about such little things, when you have people who work 15 hours a day doing physical labor on minimum wage, and you do not hear a word of complain out of their mouth. Oh well.. I have no heard the whole story. Nor do I know what kind of job these people do. So, I guess I hush until I get the whole side of their story lol

I am confused on the whole situation.. So if they stay on strike, they can not publish new episodes?

And there are sooo many shows.. How scary!

I love this show! - November 7, 2007 03:29 AM (GMT)
Yeah...I don't really know both sides of the story either. All I know is the writers want royalties from DVD's and internet sales which sounds reasonable....but there could be a lot of factors involved.

Hopefully they'll get it resolved quickly.

ILoveReed1988 - November 7, 2007 03:30 AM (GMT)
that's right..they want be any new episodes until the strike ends

Rach112 - November 7, 2007 05:24 PM (GMT)

Maybe more people will discover CM in reruns?

Yep, there's a bright side to everything I guess :D

I actually thought the writers did get royalties and stuff, it's pretty crap that they don't.

Thanks for posting all that info Jentzer :)

Special Agent Jentzer - November 8, 2007 03:25 AM (GMT)
uhhmmm clearing throat...siding with the writers 100% on this one!

Kyle - November 8, 2007 05:43 AM (GMT)
Hah well that is cool!

I do not know the whole side of the story, so I can not say. I mean one side says "those rich snobs" lol but another says "I know nothing about the situation nor how they are treated, nor how much work it is to be a writer, so I should hush."

I don't even think it is about money, so perhaps I should look into it before me making judgments!

Special Agent Jentzer - November 8, 2007 06:09 AM (GMT)
I think its complicated...... laughing......

I've tried to read a few differant stories and sides...came up with this....have a read, maybe we will understand "the why" a bit better.....

I am a television writer and I am on strike. I'm still getting used to saying that.
To me strikes have always been the province of autoworkers and miners and teachers, groups that were either criminally underpaid or socioeconomically disenfranchised.
The most deprived I've ever felt is when we run out of peanut M&Ms in the writers' room.

QUOTE
I'm not one of Hollywood's elite.
I'm not a showrunner or a seven-figure script doctor or a multi-hyphenate writer-producer-director with a three-year studio development deal.
I find work season to season, and for the last couple of years I've been on the staff of a mid-tier basic cable drama.
In short, I'm one of the WGA's rank-and-file.

QUOTE
The writers want their new pay contract to reflect the airing of their work on the internet.
Television networks are streaming more and more programming on the internet but they say this is for promotional purposes and should not be covered in the pay deal.
Receiving compensation for internet streaming was the crucial issue for the writers protesting outside Sony Pictures Entertainment in Los Angeles.

QUOTE
He added that the issue at the heart of the strike is a tough one to resolve. Writers have been asking for higher residual payments for movies and TV series sold on DVDs. They have also demanded pay schedules for programming shown on new media, including the Internet and cell phones.

Kyle...Ill try and put this perspective a bit more.....

did you know that our main man Mr. Edward Allen Bernero is credited with writing the following episodes??
Legacy
Profiler, Profiled
Plain Sight
The Fisher King (1)
The Fisher King (2)
The Big Game
The Popular Kids

and fab show creator jeff davis is credited with writing 51 episodes (and producing and co-executive producer....etc etc...these guys are so hands on)

with the internet and royalties and all sorts of other stuff...again siding with the writers....in solidarity....

CriminalMind - November 9, 2007 07:51 PM (GMT)
I completly agree with the writers on this. Yes, ok, they may be richer than teh average person, but they should still get the money they are owed. Basically, what the company is saying by not giving them roylaties etc is 'Well, we'll take your imagination, and your ideas, and your stories, make a bundle of money, but you can't have any.'

At the end of the day, I'm sure CBS and the other networks, can afford to give the writers they money they deserve.

ILoveReed1988 - November 10, 2007 03:32 AM (GMT)
you know thaT THEY can afford to get the writers more money

Kyle - November 10, 2007 07:17 AM (GMT)
Well, I suppose I support the writers too!

How many writers/people are protesting though?

just some cool pics..

I hate that the writers are on strike, but fully support them in their efforts to get what is due them. We all want to be fairly compensated for the work we do and if the directors and producers are getting their fair cuts of the royalties why shouldn't the writers receive theirs too. After all, if it wasn't for those talented writers we wouldn't have any shows or movies to watch.

paolafromparis - November 10, 2007 02:27 PM (GMT)
Les Moonves: 212-975-4545 This is for CBS
If you want to help the strikers, you can call this number, say that you are a CM fan and clame your show back!!!!

I did it already several times.

FIGHT FOR OUR SHOW!!!!!!!!

***Strike News: ‘Criminal Minds’ Producer Talks to Fans***

QUOTE
“But, understand, we simply CAN NOT accept this proposal. It kills our industry now and for the future. So, if Criminal Minds runs out of new episodes, we’re sorry. Extremely sorry. We already miss the writing room, already miss playing with the characters, already miss working with the most amazing crew in television… But being sorry to all of you doesn’t mean a lack of resolve. This choice was made for us but we will see it through.”

Edward Allen Bernero
executive director of the CBS drama “Criminal Minds
QUOTE
One of the main sticking points between writers and producers involves the definition of the word "promotional" as it applies to content. The AMPTP contends that Internet distribution of entire TV episodes or films, even if that distribution involves commercials, is promotional and should not involve payments to writers.

"So, what they are saying is, at their discretion, they can run an entire episode of a show, with commercials generating revenue and call it promotional," former Chicagoan and WGA member Edward Allen Bernero of CBS' "Criminal Minds" said in a posting on the Criminal Minds Fanatic site. "Friends, there is already a name for running an entire episode of 'Criminal Minds' with commercials in it. It's called television. And this single proposal guts every agreement we've ever made with the AMPTP."

Edward Allen Bernero
executive director of the CBS drama “Criminal Minds

Doesn't sound like it's going to be over any time soon does it? :( Do we know...are there even any negotiation talks happening?

At press time, no new talks had been scheduled, and the WGA and the AMPTP appeared to be settling in for what could be a long strike, though media reports have said California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger or former President Bill Clinton may step in to help resolve the dispute.

paolafromparis - November 10, 2007 06:59 PM (GMT)
GO SCHWARTZY GOGOGO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

We need a TERMINATOR!

I love this show! - November 10, 2007 08:31 PM (GMT)
What are they going to be able to do about it?

Kyle - November 11, 2007 07:18 PM (GMT)
The writers will not cease to strike until the companies give them what they want. So they can either let the shows all die out for several months, or they(the companies) can just say 'ok' and give them what they want!

So the companies really have to choose.. 1. Sit and say no for 5 months and then finally say yes, after they loose ratings and half the shows are reruns, or 2. Just give them what they want and let it all go through! lol

It stuns me that there are no negotiations at this time!!

Special Agent Jentzer - November 11, 2007 09:15 PM (GMT)

perhaps that is what Bill and Arnie are for.....mediators

ILoveReed1988 - November 12, 2007 12:01 AM (GMT)
