I'm being irritated by slight mistakes when describing the characters! Some of the stuff differs from what we've been told on TV <_< Only little things though!

ILoveReed1988 - November 12, 2007 12:37 AM (GMT)
like what

I love this show! - November 12, 2007 12:48 AM (GMT)
Uh oh! That would really bother me! I'm very picky about stuff like that - I like consistancy! And why would they let someone write a book if they aren't fans of the show enough to know who the characters really are?

ILoveReed1988 - November 12, 2007 12:49 AM (GMT)
yea that does sounds not good

Hi -- I'm the author of JUMP CUT. I'm assisted by Matt Clemens, who does the forensics/profiling research and co-plots. We did 10 CSI novels, 3 DARK ANGEL novels and 1 BONES. I'm the author of ROAD TO PERDITION and a lot of what I do is my own work, but I also do movie and TV tie-in novels. I did AMERICAN GANGSTER recently, for instance. The CRIMINAL MINDS books are licensed by CBS to Penguin. I was approached to write the novels and was happy to get the opportunity to be part of this excellent series.

I like the show very much and use the DVD sets as my guide but also the show "bible." You may find fault with our characterizations and so on, but this is official CRIMINAL MINDS -- it's read and approved by Ed Bernero and others at the show. Our proposed stories are run by them, we get notes, then the novels are read and we again get notes. I'm revising the second novel, KILLER PROFILE, right now.

There are problems you may not be aware of. For example, we had to begin KILLER PROFILE using Rossi as a character BEFORE any episodes had aired -- we had only one script, the introductory one (which changed considerably by the time it aired), to guide us. Only two Rossi episodes had aired when we had to turn in the novel. We are tweaking the character now, doing rewrites, but it's tough to write a new character with so little to go on.

I hope you'll give the novels a chance and understand that some of the character stuff -- Reid's feelings about Prentiss, for example -- are sincere attempts to understand and explain things about the characters that the show can only hint at. We are able to get inside the thoughts of the characters in a way an episode can't. I think most CRIMINAL MINDS fans will enjoy the books -- at least I hope so.

Thanks for listening.

Max Allan Collins

Ooooops! I guess my comments sounded very critical didn't they?

I haven't read the book but I need to. (I shouldn't judge first) but I love the characters from the show so much I'm afraid to read anything that will portray them as something different! (even if the characters in the book are the "real" ones - it's the ones on the TV show that I see and love)

I'm sure it would be very difficult to write a character like Rossi in a book without a whole lot to go on.

Anyway, I apologize if I offended you with my comments. :)

So you said you like the show....do you watch it regularly for fun or do you watch it because it's work related?

[COLOR=red]I'm glad that there are going to be even more Criminal Minds books! I'm going to read them all!

@macphilms - are you serious you wrote American Gangster?!

CriminalMind - December 12, 2007 07:53 PM (GMT)
Wow, honoured to read ya post Mr Collins! And we're not normally this critical, we're just obbsessive! :D

Also, maximum appreciation for bring us a CM book-I now feel like we're a 'real' top-notch show! :P

i hope that the book arrives in france :)

macphilms - December 13, 2007 06:54 AM (GMT)
Yes, I wrote AMERICAN GANGSTER but it was not original to me -- I was hired to write a novel from the screenplay. It's done very well -- spent a month on the New York Times bestseller list. On the other hand, I wrote the original ROAD TO PERDITION, which is my proudest achievement.

I had not watched the show when I was approached to write the novels. After writing 10 very successful CSI novels, I was not asked back, and my availability led to being offered CRIMINAL MINDS. I knew the show was hugely successful and that the subject matter was right up (or down?) my alley. So I got the 1st season boxed set, watched it, liked it very much and accepted the gig.

After that I was sent a certain number of scripts and DVDs of 2nd season episodes. By now I am a fan and I watch (and record) the show every week in HD. It's a terrific show and I'm honored to be part of it.

The characters in the books are supposed to be the same as on the show. TV characters always have at least a little inconsitency because so many different writers are involved. My test is this: if I write a line of dialogue and can't hear the actor saying it, I scrap that line and try again. The main difference, again, is that a novel gets inside the character, and this may not gibe with a viewer's individual interpretation of that character.

I would love to know what the fans think on a specific topic -- who is the main character? Operating on the assumption that even in an ensemble show, there is a main character, who would that be? (My theory is that it's Hotchner.) I'm not saying best character, favorite character, etc. But who is Captain Kirk (on my theory, Hotch is Kirk, Reid is Spock and Rossi/Gideon Dr. McCoy).

CriminalMind - December 13, 2007 10:31 AM (GMT)
I have to say, I liked your CSI novels, and you managed to get the characters pretty good, and they matched the TV pretty well, so I have no complaints there! :D

Obviously you have much more-would power be the right word?-when it comes to character development, because you have much more time/space to develope them, so taht will be interesting to see-read, even! And that's a clever way to write the dialogue, I'd never though of that.

I would definetly say Hotch is the main character, since he's the boss. But, the fanbase for characters like Reid, and Morgan, are very large, so perhaps Hotch wouldn't necessarily be the main 'icon' of the show. When Mandy Patinkin/Gideon was still in the show, I would have said, no question, that Gideon was the main character. Now, I'm not so sure.

Also, as a little sidenote, I have to say, it's truely awesome of you to sign up here and talk to the fans. Not many people would take the time to do that. :)

JulieFan - December 13, 2007 10:51 AM (GMT)
I have all the CSI books in Dutch. But have only read one, It takes me a long time to finish them because they are written a certain way, sometimes boring (sorry :P) and long. It could just be the translation.

I might buy this book, is it already written  ?

Writers are always more reponsive then actors etc. Like I wrote two e-mails to my favorite new author Cody McFadyen and I got e-mails back :)!

ok this is a really rude question, but do you make much money? -_- I've always wanted to know that!

Oh my.. I'm totally getting off topic. Oh well I'm not the person to ask. I know nothing about the characters :-no

I love this show! - December 13, 2007 12:26 PM (GMT)
I agree with CriminalMind - the "main" character would be Hotch but only because he is supposed to be the leader of the team. However, at least for right now, he has not been the central character lately (at least not the way I think he should be for being the team leader) It is an ensemble cast and I think they are all wonderful actors.

I'm a little down and frustrated with the show right now and what we just described is actually one of my biggest complaints. We don't really know who's in charge or what's going on with any of the characters. Reid for example seems to have at least three personalities and can be any one of them in any episode at random. (sometimes he's the shy, awkward Reid, sometimes he the statistic-giving annyoing little brother type who is rather obnoxious, and sometimes he's the mature, having learned so much from the job Reid) Does he have such a wide range of characteristics in the book as well?

Sorry, I'm just ranting (and complaining)

I'll shut up now.

[COLOR=red]First of all - it's great to have you on the board...

I'm really looking forward to read the Criminal Minds novels...

(as well as I would enjoy to watch American Gangster - but I'm to young to watch it <_< )

However, I agree with you, I think that Hotch is the "main" character, he is the team leader and keeps the team together...

I'm a huge fan of Criminal Minds - but sometimes I just think "What the hell is wrong with the writers/producers"? I mean all those changes in the cast - sorry, but I'm still mourning about the loss of Elle... :(

macphilms - December 13, 2007 06:07 PM (GMT)
As for how much money I make, let's just say I get considerably less for a novel than a TV writer gets for an episode. But the cost of living in Iowa is a lot less than in Hollywood....

Funny you should mention Elle -- when I dug into the boxed set of season one, I thought she was the most interesting character and possibly the best actor, with the possible exception of Patinkin. When I went to my researcher/co-plotter Matt Clemens and said I was looking forward to writing that character, he broke the news to me. Prentiss started off pretty shaky but she has grown. Paige Brewster was fabulous on Andy Richter Controls the Universe...check that out if you can find it.

I think the hardest thing about doing these novels is the lag time behind the show. I believe the reason why I did not get asked back to do more CSI (remember, we sold something like 2 million copies!) is that I had -- at the request of CBS/CSI -- done a story set in the season where the team was broken up. Then Pocket Books sat on the manuscript for over a year, and the show returned to its original format -- leaving me with a book that seemed out of step.

When I first started watching CRIMINAL MINDS, I thought Hotch was a stiff, but I have grown to really like the character (and actor). I really liked the opening episodes this season, post-Patinkin and pre-Mantegna. I felt like everybody stepped up to the plate, and all of the actors are now hitting their stride.

I've noticed Reid's seeming inconsistency. That's the kind of thing we try, in the novels, to weave into a coherent whole. We have the opportunity to get inside these people in a way the show can't.

On the other hand, it's harder to make profiling work as the principal law enforcement tool in a novel of 90,000 words (as opposed to a 20,000 word TV script).

Happy holidays, everybody, and thanks giving me a chance to interact.

M.A.C.

CalleighElleDakota - December 13, 2007 06:11 PM (GMT)
You're welcome!

Well, Elle was and still is my favorite character -and I actually still dislike Prentiss...

JulieFan - December 13, 2007 06:21 PM (GMT)
Let's just remove her from the novel :P nobody seems to like her (A)

CalleighElleDakota - December 13, 2007 06:26 PM (GMT)
I agree with you - but they can't just change the team in the novel - they would have to do it on the show as well...

JulieFan - December 13, 2007 06:35 PM (GMT)
Well then why don't write a season 1 novel :P

CalleighElleDakota - December 13, 2007 06:41 PM (GMT)
That's a great idea! But it would be a bit weird if they write now a season one novel - when there already some with Rossi...

That's stupid that writers get less. It takes more time to write a novel then it takes to write a screenplay I think.. <_<

That's basically the same thing as a teacher making less money then a valet parker in Las Vegas.

I would love to do a novel that dealt with Elle, a first season novel or book with her returning or any number of possibilites...but I would not be allowed to. TV shows, when there's been a cast change, like to pretend the departed (sometimes fired) actor never existed.

Frankly I have quite a few references to Gideon in KILLER PROFILE (and there are Elle references in JUMP CUT) and I'm surprised they weren't cut.

Paige Brewster is a really good actress. They just haven't given her character enough definition yet. With Rossi some real thought was given, I think.

I love this show! - December 14, 2007 03:54 AM (GMT)
Yes, Paget Brewster is a good actress. I didn't like Emily at first but I've always liked Paget (what I know of her)

I still have hope I will like Rossi too.
