Mantegna will play FBI Special Agent David Rossi.
He’ll make his debut in the series fifth episode.
The back story on Mantegna’s character: he was an original member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit “who took early retirement to go on lecture and book tours,” according to the network press release.
He’s volunteered to return to the presumably desperately short-staffed unit. |

EMMY AWARD NOMINEE JOE MANTEGNA JOINS THE CAST OF "CRIMINAL MINDS"
LOS ANGELES, Aug. 13 - Joe Mantegna will join the cast of CRIMINAL MINDS starring as FBI Special Agent David Rossi. Mantegna is scheduled to make his first appearance in the fifth episode of the season which is broadcast Wednesdays (9:00-10:00 PM, ET/PT) on the CBS Television Network. CRIMINAL MINDS also stars Thomas Gibson, Paget Brewster, Shemar Moore, Matthew Gray Gubler, AJ Cook and Kirsten Vangsness.
"We are all THRILLED to have Joe Mantegna joining our family. He's an incredible actor, a genuinely nice person and, as a fellow Chicagoan, I can tell you he makes fantastic Italian Beef sandwiches and Chicago Style Hot Dogs," said Executive Producer Ed Bernero.
"We've been fans of Joe's since his early days on the stage and think he will be a wonderful addition to our CRIMINAL MINDS cast," added Executive Producers Mark Gordon and Deb Spera.
Special Agent Rossi is an original member of the Behavioral Analysis Unit who took early retirement to go on lecture and book tours, and has volunteered to return to the unit.
Joe Mantegna is currently nominated for an Emmy Award for his role in the summer mini-series, "The Starter Wife." His additional television credits include the series "Joan of Arcadia," "First Monday," the mini-series "The Last Don" (Emmy Award nomination), and "The Last Don II," all on the Network, as well as "The Simpsons," the television movies "The Rat Pack" (Emmy Award nomination) and three installments of "Spenser for Hire." His feature film credits include "Searching for Bobby Fischer," "The Godfather, Part III," "Bugsy" and "The Simpsons Movie." Mantegna won a Tony Award for his performance in "Glengarry Glen Ross."
CRIMINAL MINDS is produced by ABC Television Studios in association with CBS Paramount Network Television. |

he looks like a "david rossi". :D sounds like he could be a keep (not that we have a choice right now...)
I love this show! - August 14, 2007 10:39 PM (GMT)
I hope his character joins the show in a very positive way (like about the time they are coming back together as a "family" from all the problems they have had) I don't want him to come in as a character with a lot of baggage and he has problems right off the bat.

I second that, the existing team has enough problems without another character adding to their baggage!

if the BAU had a time line of employment.......Do you think Hotch or any of the team would have worked with SSA Rossi before he retired?
Rach112 - August 15, 2007 09:10 PM (GMT)
Maybe Gideon and possibly Hotch....Actually, I'm gonna go with only Gideon having worked with him before, although I suppose the other team members may be familiar with his work and might have came across him in their careers. Speaking of time lines, how long is a CM season meant to be?
Special Agent Jentzer - August 15, 2007 09:28 PM (GMT)
and what is with the book tour.......did we not see agent ryan in "unfinished business" on a book tour....any one seen elle at the local Barnes and Noble???
Love the title though

 Yeah I'm sure Elle's book would make fascinating reading. Wonder what she'd have to say about her time in the BAU..Is writing a book just what these agents do when they've had enough of real work? Maybe Gideon will go down that route.

I'd say Gideon and maybe Hotch have worked with him. In the pilot Hotch mentioned working in the Seattle office for two years but since we don't know how long ago that was......
Rach112 - August 16, 2007 09:56 PM (GMT)
Is Hotch meant to be around late thirties? Anyways, I guess it's possible he worked with Rossi before if Rossi worked for the BAU for quite a while...wonder why he's volunteering to return ;)
I love this show! - August 16, 2007 10:36 PM (GMT)
I figured that out once - judging from what he said in Fisher King when he was talking to Haley about the yearbook. He must be 38 (actuallly sounds kind of young for all he's accomplished but...)
And the only reason I've heard so far why Rossi is "returning" is because the BAU team is short-handed.
Rach112 - August 17, 2007 10:25 PM (GMT)
I thought he seemed kinda young too ;) Wasn't he a lawyer before he joined the FBI too?
Maybe this Rossi guy is just ready for some real work again. I guess we'll find out soon enough!
I love this show! - August 17, 2007 11:35 PM (GMT)
Actually....not soon enough for me! :P

38 days to go! It'll fly by :D I hope

Mr Ed Bernero speaks out with Lisa of the Washinton Post | QUOTE |
Mantegna's character will be introduced five episodes into the new season. His character will be "based on an amalgam of the original profilers," Bernero says -- a guy who retired from profiling about a decade ago and is now very well off, lecturing and traveling the world. He volunteers to come back to work, in Gideon's absence, leading people to ask why. He has a secret -- something left undone, Bernero says, which will be cleared up in the course of the season.
In some respects, he'll be a fish out of water; when he last worked for the BAU, there were no women, and they investigated cases by themselves, not as teams. "He's come back and he'll have to learn to play by the new rules . . . and it's a struggle for him," Bernero says.
Patinkin has returned to the show to shoot footage that will be used in the first two episodes, explaining his departure.
The season debut will be a modified version of an episode that was shot last season, but never aired. In the episode, the team investigates a serial killer targeting women at a college. The episode was scheduled to be broadcast the week of the Virginia Tech killings; CBS yanked it.
Now, scenes from that episode will be used in flashback, intercut with scenes in which Gideon is seen writing a "cryptic note" to someone. In the second episode, viewers will find out whom the letter was intended for and what the end of the Gideon character is going to be. |
Rach112 - August 21, 2007 11:50 AM (GMT)
Another team member with a secret, what a shocker! :P They just had to have a new character with plenty baggage ;) Nothing's ever simple in their world!
Frank's_Evilution - August 21, 2007 09:20 PM (GMT)
Sounds interesting...I can't wait to figure out what Gideon's problem is going to be! :P And it'll be interesting to see Mantenga's character struggling with the new rules.
And, yeah, Hotch seems pretty young to be so acclompished. He's suppossed to have been a lawyer once, in SWAT once, worked in a Seattle office once, and have enough experience to be a SSA? Although, according to the end of season 2, his superiors were unsure about hiring him in the first place...

Just what I was thinking. I hope he doesn't have the attitude of former SSA Ryan from Unfinished Business.
shawngf - August 21, 2007 11:09 PM (GMT)
Just opened this weeks TV Guide(with PRIVATE PRACTICE on the cover) and found this article about Joe Mantegna:
*Joe was always their first pick. Others were just names thrown out. Even the Kietel thing was never really all that serious.
*Joe immediately said "yes" to the offer.
*Joe was already a fan of the show, but he wants to hit the ground running and so is doing a marathon of the shows to prep.
*His first appearance will actually be ep 6.
About Rossi: (perhaps spoilerish)
*
*
*
*
*
*Old school profiler with his own mysterious reasons for coming back
*Is the antithesis of Gideon - "fastidious and wears jackets".
*Is uncomfortable with "private jets, high tech equipment and female agents"
And finally, Ed Bernero on Mandy and the rumors that no one would work with him:
"Ridiculous," says Ed Bernero, adding that Matthew Gray Gubler (Dr. Reid) was on set with Patinkin. "The rumors assign a lot more importance to him leaving that we really think. It's like, so what? If you don't want to be on our team - then don't."

Yet:

The team was so not receptive to SSA Ryan...didn't they find him really annoying?

This character will bring a lot to the show. My guess is he will get on good with Morgan...but the rest of the team, it will be interesting.
I do find Rossi's "Profile" a bit conflicting???
He will be meeting three very strong female personalities!
And the technology, from simple cell phones to Garcia vast abilities to secure information, will be an eye opener.
And if you are "well off" and you "travel the world" wouldn't you appreciate/need cell phones and private jets???
fastidious...."giving careful attention to detail; hard to please"
hmmm says the girl that works for the airline....everyone owns a cell phone/blacberry/laptop......maybe Garcia will become his new best friend?
Although both retired I see a big difference between Ryan and Rossi....
I hope Rossi's secret, "something left undone", will not be as obsessive as Ryans "one that got away".
as usual, just a few scrambled thoughts...hmmm

Rach112 - August 22, 2007 05:20 PM (GMT)
Uncomfortable with female agents?! He's gonna have problems! And he'll need to adjust quickly to teamwork if he's used to working alone. There's gonna be tension! I think there might be conflict between this guy and Hotch...
The team seemed to find Ryan annoying but by the end Morgan at least seemed to be getting on okay with him. I do hope their characters are very different! I don't wanna judge before we've even seen the character but I'm thinking it might be hard to like this guy.
Special Agent Jentzer - August 22, 2007 05:33 PM (GMT)
I remember that scene on the plane, when elle and hotch are talking about how sad and lonely Ryan seemed to be.......I dont get the feeling that Rossi is "sad and lonely".
I think, because he sounds like he has moved on, he (rossi) will come around quickly to the team aspect of the "new BAU"
oh boy...how many days....and we won't meet him till after Halloween.....
How can you not like Garcia....she will "just work him some magic"

I love this show! - August 22, 2007 10:19 PM (GMT)
I don't want to judge him before I see him either but I do hope he's not just a re-worked Ryan character. Now if his "struggles" add a few lighter moments and we get some laughs (like some of those awkward moments that Reid normally experiences) then that could be good!
Reid's-fav-cheerleader - August 23, 2007 03:22 AM (GMT)
I for one am excited. Unfortunately for me I found Mandy's act less than impressive the latter half of the second season so it doesn't kill me that he's left. I just felt less connected to Gideon in the second season than in the first.

A Crime Show Produces A New Body! | QUOTE |
By ALLISON HOPE WEINER Published: September 5, 2007 NY TIMES
Previously on “Criminal Minds,” a star abruptly quit the series, putting the show’s future in peril. This season on “Criminal Minds,” a crisis is averted as a familiar face steps into a new starring role.
For this CBS drama series, which has its third year’s premiere on Sept. 26, the synopsis couldn’t have turned out better if the network had written the script itself.
Just two months ago the future looked bleak for “Criminal Minds” after one of its stars, Mandy Patinkin, unexpectedly failed to attend the first script read-through of the season and then abruptly quit. Edward Bernero, the executive producer of the show, which concerns the Behavioral Analysis Unit of the F.B.I., which hunts serial criminals, faced having to write Mr. Patinkin out and recast his role, all while shooting new episodes.
“That first week, we really weren’t sure what was going to happen,” Mr. Bernero said. Speaking of Mr. Patinkin, who played Special Agent Jason Gideon, Mr. Bernero recalled that “we took him out of the first episode and when we finally got a call that he wasn’t coming back, the first thing we did was put together a list of people.”
“And Joe Mantegna,” he continued, “was at the top of that list.”
While Harvey Keitel and Geena Davis were among those considered as replacements, Mr. Bernero said that “the offer we were really serious about was Joe.” Reviewing his credentials, Mr. Bernero said that Mr. Mantegna had “a great television career — he’s Emmy-nominated for ‘Starter Wife’ — and he’s had an amazing movie career.”
Even on his first day on the set, Mr. Mantegna seemed comfortable playing Special Agent David Rossi, formerly retired from the bureau and one of the unit’s original members, who has since gone on to write books, give lectures and make money. Dressed in a stylish sport coat and well-tailored jeans, Mr. Mantegna’s Rossi conveys confidence and coolness as he is introduced to some of the other agents, somehow making it seem as if he has never worked anywhere else.
“There’s a mystery to Joe as an actor that can lull you into a false sense of security,” said Nina Tassler, president of CBS Entertainment. “When you go back to those ‘Glengarry Glen Ross’ days, you see that he can sharpen the blade as good as the next guy. He likes the show’s material and is truly professional. And he brings some hidden dangers to the character. He’s more complex than he lets on.”
When deciding how to replace Gideon, Mr. Bernero said he sought to create a character who was that agent’s antithesis. “In looking over the world of television shows, the show I think that replaced characters the best of all time was ‘M*A*S*H,’ ” Mr. Bernero said. “ ‘M*A*S*H’ always replaced a character with an exact opposite. When McLean Stevenson left, who played a total anti-authority guy, they replaced him with Sherman T. Potter, who was a regular Army stick-in-the-mud. They filled the same role, but with someone who was the opposite. That’s what we wanted to do.”
The early episodes don’t reveal entirely why Rossi has left his cushy world to return to his old government job. But it is evident from the first time he appears on screen, in the episode scheduled for Oct. 31, that he is no Gideon. While Gideon, a sensitive, professorial type and fatherly figure, never cared much about his appearance, Rossi likes to look sharp. And unlike Gideon, Rossi tries to stay above emotion in a conversation, carefully measuring his words before speaking.
Mr. Mantegna said he was confident about joining the hit television series and didn’t share any of the concerns expressed by Mr. Patinkin about the show’s difficult and often violent subject matter. “Over the course of my career, I’ve been shot and I’ve been maimed,” he said with a wry smile. “At least this time it’s happening to someone else. I really don’t have much problem detaching myself from my work.”
Mr. Mantegna said he was not interested in discussing Mr. Patinkin’s departure. “It’s not on my radar,” he said. “I don’t know what the old ballgame was, and I don’t care. It’s the first day of school, but I’ve been going to school for a long time.”
Through his agent, Mr. Patinkin declined to discuss his departure from the show or his replacement.
The way Mr. Bernero wrote Gideon out of the series — he is gone after this season’s first two episodes — allowed the cast and crew to continue filming and didn’t slow down the production schedule. It also avoided any potentially awkward reunions with Mr. Patinkin, who had been with the show from its start, when he shot his final scenes last month.
“The first script we were shooting right out of the gate happened to be perfectly designed to drop Mandy out of it,” said Glenn Kershaw, a producer and director on the show. “We then put together an entirely different company, and I spent a day directing Mandy up at the Disney Ranch. He only had to face me, since we’re starting with a flashback about why Mandy is writing this letter, and that cuts into the case from last year. Ironically, the day I was shooting Mandy’s scenes, I got a call up that Joe had been signed.”
Despite a resolve to move forward, there are still some concerns among the cast about how viewers will respond to a post-Patinkin series. “Yeah, there’s the Mandy factor, but this is not the Mandy show,” said Shemar Moore, who plays Special Agent Derek Morgan. “We all know what Mandy brought, and it was a wonderful ingredient, but it wasn’t an overwhelming, necessary ingredient for this show to work. This show works with or without any of us.”
Fans of the show are “going to compare Joe Mantegna to Mandy — whether he’s better, whether he’s different,” Mr. Moore added.
“There’s nothing we can do,” he continued. “We’re going to have to weather that storm.” |
Rach112 - September 5, 2007 07:11 PM (GMT)
That's definitely true about the comparison part! I loved that emotional quality to Gideon so it's gonna be really interesting having a character that's his total opposite. Maybe being Gideon's opposite will make him easier to accept ;)

I really hate to see Mandy leave the show ... Gideon is one of my favorite characters ... I just hate it overall when a show I enjoy watching has to make cast changes ... I'm still mourning the fact that there is a "new" Prof. Dumbledore .. LOL .. I really liked Richard Harris in that role

mandy will sure will be missed...
I love this show! - September 5, 2007 11:03 PM (GMT)
I hate that we have to lose Gideon but if Mandy really was that unhappy then for everyone involved I'm happy that he decided to move on. (still a little torn about the way he chose to leave.....but that's a different story)
Moving on.......I'm actually very excited about this new character! For me this is completely different than when Elle left (not really sure why it's different but it is) I had a really hard time accepting Emily but I really think I'm going to like this new guy. Maybe part of it is that they seemed to replace Elle with someone too much like Elle (in my opinion anyway...I kept waiting to see who Emily was and wasn't seeing it.) I'm very happy to see that they are going to make Rossi completely different from Gideon. I think that will help a lot in helping viewers warm up to Rossi and let Gideon go. If they really can replace Gideon with a character that is equally interesting (I don't think that will be an easy task) I think fans will be forgiving and willing to move on.
It sounds like they have made a great casting choice and I hope Joe is feeling comfortable joining the cast and the rest of the cast has made the necessary adjustments too.
Great article Jentzer!
