Oh, I'm so happy! He's an awesome actor! I can't wait to see what the writers do with the character.

I love this show! - August 11, 2007 03:19 AM (GMT)
I'm pretty optimistic about this choice - I've heard his name - looks like he's got a pretty long resume, but I don't know that I've seen him in anything where I've got any expectations for him. He looks like the "senior, experienced" agent I was hoping for - and I'm glad they chose a man instead of a woman.

I think I can be very happy about this (well....under the circumstances) No one can replace Gideon but as long as they don't bring him in as the same character.....I think I'm good with it!

Special Agent Jentzer - August 11, 2007 03:42 AM (GMT)
I've really never heard of him....and I think that is OK!!

Special Agent Jentzer - August 11, 2007 05:47 PM (GMT)
I know!!! I don't want to stereotype him already...but I do like his "dark" look.....I'll use dark as apposed to "evil"

either or
WELCOME JOE!!!!

I learned the hard hard hard way, you can NOT compare him to Gideon or anyone!!

He will just have to be Supervisory Special Agent "JOE" (for now anyway).

Mantegna Joins 'Criminal Minds'

The CBS show finds its replacement for Mandy Patinkin, after negotiations with Harvey Keitel fall apart

by Dawnie Walton (assistant managing editor of EW.com)

Joe Mantegna has signed on as the new star of CBS' procedural Criminal Minds, EW has confirmed.

The 59-year-old actor will replace Mandy Patinkin, who suddenly announced in July that he would be leaving the show over ''creative differences.''

There are no details yet as to the character Mantegna will play, or exactly when he will start. (Patinkin is expected to shoot one more episode.)

Executive producer Ed Bernero made the casting announcement on Friday.....he also had downplayed rumors that Harvey Keitel was going to sign on.

In fact, EW has learned, Keitel was a near-lock, but negotiations ultimately fell apart over the actor's demands for creative control and perks.

Mantegna's previous TV credits include the series Joan of Arcadia (also on CBS) and, most recently, the USA miniseries The Starter Wife.

That's what I thought! I was like 'Dude, he was Fat Tony!' hehe, he does seem more the 'gansta' type than the profiler, but hey *shrug* You never know!

Welcome Joe!

Welcome SSA Joe!
I've never heard of him before....then again I don't keep up too much with actors and etc.
Well, I hope they won't make him too much like a replacement Gideon. I want a new kind of personality.

he has a lot of good things being said about him....does any body know anything about "The Starter Wife"??

Joe Mantegna bags a big role in a hit CBS series

Chicago actor Joe Mantegna is in final negotiations to join the cast of the CBS drama "Criminal Minds," according to the Hollywood Reporter.

A spokeswoman for CBS had no comment, but “Criminal Minds” executive producer Ed Bernero said that the actor was “officially” joining the show in a Web site posting on Aug. 10.

Mantegna, who first came to prominence on Chicago's stages and who won a Tony for his work in David Mamet's "Glengarry Glen Ross," is expected to take the lead on the successful procedural after star Mandy Patinkin unexpectedly dropped out of the show just before the start of the third season of “Minds.”

Patinkin’s abrupt departure in July prompted some choice words from Bernero, a former Chicago cop.

“He left us completely in the proverbial lurch,” Bernero said in a posting to the site Criminal Minds Fanatic.

By contrast Bernero told the same site Friday that he’s “very excited” about Mantegna’s casting.

Patinkin is expected to appear in one more “Criminal Minds” episode to wrap up the loose ends of his character, FBI profiler Jason Gideon.

Bernero and Mantegna have a lot in common; they’re not just both former Chicagoans (as is Patinkin) – they’re both ferocious Bears fans.

Mantegna, who owns the Windy City-themed eatery Taste Chicago in the Los Angeles area, was recently in town to work on the comedy “Witless Protection,” and starred as a powerful Hollywood executive in the frothy USA summer series “The Starter Wife.”

I've done some research and I am going to try and answer my own question!!

This IS Great!!

here is a testing theory.......go to this link.....and listen to the video....then watch the video......

THIS IS SSA JOE!!!

I love this show! - August 13, 2007 10:50 PM (GMT)
I was surprised to hear how meek and gentle he sounded....a few people commented on his looking "gangtsa" and I kind of had to agree he did look like he could be a Mafia unsub, but he sounded a lot different than I expected (in a good way!) And I liked what he had to say too. (I know nothing about the show he was talking about but he sounds like he has a good attitude and is a dedicated and hard-working actor)

I hope he fits in well with the other actors and this all works out to be a smooth transition. I still say there isn't a substitute for Gideon but if it had to happen at least it's looking positive at this point that it could work out well.

cbrunberg - August 14, 2007 01:26 AM (GMT)
i think its a great choice.i have seen him in several shows.next season should be interesting how they work his charater in. :D

CriminalMindsFan - August 14, 2007 05:51 PM (GMT)
I they made a pretty good choice. I've seen him in some of his shows and he's a good actor. I know he could never replace Gideon but I will definitely give him a good chance.

Kyle - August 15, 2007 02:11 AM (GMT)
Ah, it might take me a while to get used to him, just as it did with Prentiss..

Right now, I have never heard of this guy! He looks like he could be a more traditional, laid back character.

So I am not too excited, but that is just because I have never heard of this guy. But, I think I will warm up to him!

Joe Mantegna just wants to slip into 'Criminal Minds' set

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Veteran actor Joe Mantegna says he's trying to make his entry into CBS' "Criminal Minds" as easy as possible for everyone.

The 60-year-old actor is sliding into a spot left open when Mandy Patinkin decided to leave the show.

"All I can do is just be who I am and just be myself," said Mantegna. "It needn't complicate the rest of the cast's lives any more than it has to because, obviously, there must have been some complications that needed an adjustment. I just felt that I'm there to do my best and fit in."

But it wasn't as if Mantegna was walking into a room full of strangers on his first day.

In fact, he says about 50% of the Wednesday night series "Criminal Minds" crew came from his 2003-2005 hit show "Joan of Arcadia."

"It's kind of ironic for me because the day 'Joan of Arcadia' finally got word that we weren't being picked up, I went up to the office to clear out my trailer and I remember they were packing up all these boxes and they all had 'Criminal Minds' written on the side," said Mantegna. "Our two producers at the time both went to 'Criminal Minds,' they were the original show-runners there, and they took a big portion of the crew with them, so when I came to the first day [on 'Minds'], it was unbelievable."

Though Mantegna's character, David Rossi, will take over the job Patinkin's Gideon left behind, Mantegna emphasizes the fact that the characters are two very different people.

"I use a sports analogue," said Mantegna, who begins his role on the show next week. "Like if a baseball team traded a batter and brought in a new guy, it's a totally different guy, but he's still doing the same job batting at a certain number in the lineup. Hopefully, the audience will find that interesting and exciting, and we hope the show will continue to be the success that it is."

Though Mantegna wasn't a die-hard "Criminal Minds" fan before he landed his role on the CBS show, once he signed his contract, he immersed himself in the previous four seasons' DVDs.

"I usually discover shows in syndication," said Mantegna. "Like when I did 'The Starter Wife' with Debra Messing; for me, 'Will & Grace' was like a new show because I watched it at midnight in syndication."

"Of course, I'm now the biggest fan in the world of 'Criminal Minds,'" said Mantegna. "I love the show. I love the writing. The people, the cast, the characters. For me, it's been a great fit. I was looking for a show exactly like this."

I'm exited to discover this new character (although I like Gideon a lot but he leaves so we must accept that) :) .
In fact I'm trying to say welcome to David Rossi (maybe it's strange I don't know... ;) )

I love this show! - October 20, 2007 05:30 PM (GMT)
I'm looking forward to his coming too. I hope I like him.....I think I will. :) It will be interesting to see how his character fits in with everyone else.

We only have two more weeks to go before we are introduced to him.

Garcia44 - October 20, 2007 06:13 PM (GMT)
I'm looking forward to Joe joining the cast. Maybe that will put the "balance" back into things for me. I started watching the show because I was a fan of Mandy, but i'll keep watching because I really have come to love the show and ALL the characters.
My daughter tells me i'm in the minority of people who are not enjoying the show as much as before .. but that's ok .. it's not the first time i've been on the other side of things .. lol. I'm old and opinionated and I don't like familiar things to change .. what can I say :P

You're not alone in that! (I'm old and opinionated too!)

I would have loved season one to have stayed the way it was forever! I liked it the best. But, I think sometimes writers, actors - all the people who give us CM are "artists" who feel they constantly need to expand and create and grow - and so the characters we love so much do too whether we like it or not.

I still love the show of course.....it's my favorite, but I haven't liked some of the changes they've made. (I could write an essay just on the changes in Reid! )

The only episode I didn't really like out of the four we've seen so far in season three was Scared to death. I still can't figure out what it was about that episode that seemed so strange to me. But....I have grown to like all the characters so much and I enjoy the stories so I know I'll be around for a long time!

im excited to see joe joined the cast..he will never be able to replace mandy ...though!!

Season one was by far my favourite too! I understand change is necessary but there has been a heck of a lot of change for us to deal with.

I don't really know how I feel about Rossi joining the team. The trailer implies he's gonna cause more team tension, at least in the beginning. Do we really need more of that? I'm excited for a new character but at the same time I just know it's going to make me feel Gideon's absence even more strongly, at least in the beginning. I'll probably grow to like him though, just like with Emily!

ILoveReed1988 - October 20, 2007 09:45 PM (GMT)
yea ..i mean i miss gideon...its just gonna be odd..it is still weird for me without mandy

I love this show! - October 20, 2007 10:30 PM (GMT)
I will always miss Gideon too and I expect in the beginning there will be some tension as they get to know each other but for some reason I think it's going to be easier to accept Rossi than it was to accept Emily. (I don't know why) and I sure hope I'm not wrong on that!

ILoveReed1988 - October 20, 2007 10:33 PM (GMT)
i hope sooo...cause it seems in the begging..their gonna bump heads!!

I love this show! - October 30, 2007 02:25 AM (GMT)
Only two more days until we get to meet Agent Rossi......I really, really hope he fits in with the team faster than Emily seemed to. I expect him to be the outsider for a few episodes but I hope it doesn't stay like that for the whole season!

Rach112 - October 30, 2007 09:42 AM (GMT)
If the trailer is anything to go by, it looks like he won't fit in that easily to begin with but I think the writers should realise by now we don't want a divided team, with people arguing and being outsiders etc. Let's get some of that season 1 team feeling back!

I love this show! - October 30, 2007 11:47 AM (GMT)
I don't know......the writers haven't seem to get the hint we want the Reid/drug thing to be answered for us!

I saw the trailer too.......There is no "I" in team! Here we go again - another Max Ryan!

Hopefully it won't be that bad. It will be horrible if no one starts off liking him!

ILoveReed1988 - October 30, 2007 07:00 PM (GMT)
yea..we dont want to start off hating him...its gonna be interesting to see...!!

omorris - November 1, 2007 03:52 AM (GMT)
Tonight, 31st October, was his first night on the show.
Not sure I will like him in this new role.
He is a great actor. I will have to adjust to this I suppose.

Love the show.
Both my husband I never miss it.

Rach112 - November 1, 2007 11:30 AM (GMT)
I'm not gonna read the episode chat because I haven't seen this episode yet but I really hope it was great and that Rossi is an okay character!

omorris - welcome to the board!

ac5000 - November 2, 2007 02:10 AM (GMT)
meh...he's alright. Itwill take a VERY loooooooooong time for me to "like" him. He does seem to blend in with the team though.

on the other hand, i did like the new opening credits

I love this show! - November 2, 2007 11:34 AM (GMT)
** spoilers **

I can't decide what I thought of him. When I first saw the credits I was like "What!!! He gets top billing over Thomas Gibson?" But then I saw they rearranged it so TG was last. His character came on very......how do we say......strong? Okay, I get that he's used to working alone but he was kind of a jerk the way he acted. Although I did rather enjoy that attitude with Strauss!

What's up with his asking Garcia to keep the folder just between them? He's pretty open about wanting to come back for a reason but the reason itself is a big mystery? And did anyone catch he actually used the words "unfinished business?" Hello! That was the title for the Max Ryan episode!

ILoveReed1988 - November 2, 2007 01:07 PM (GMT)
yea he did kinda come of as a jerk.....whne i was TG was lat im like what the heck?? yea intresting about the folder thing
