Title: Gideon Written Out?
Description: Please, Tell Me It Isn't So
moshpitpenguin - July 17, 2007 06:12 PM (GMT)
Wow, I haven't been on here in what seem slike an eternity.
HI!
[I don't think half of you even know who I am, so...]
BUT!
Last night, when I was sitting in my La-z-Boy eating animal crackers at oh-so-early in the morning, I came across one of those Celbrity Gossip shows.. ET or something related.
And it said that when Mandy didn't show up to work on the next season, they wrote him out... but they also said something about the pilot.
My question-Does anyone know if they meant they just wrote Gideon out of the pilot, or he's gone by-by like our dear Elle?

And to answer your question, I don't think anybody really knows...
What is it about New York...dragging our stars back East??
I love penguins!!
just so we don't have to get all caught up as we are moving forward, here is a pretty good "sum up" report live from hollywood!!

A mind of his own: Patinkin quits Criminal Minds
By Maria Elena Fernandez Originally published July 17, 2007
LOS ANGLES // Yesterday was NBC's big day on the press tour before the Television Critics' Association, beginning with the introduction of the company's dynamic new co-chairmen, Ben Silverman and Marc Graboff. But elsewhere in Hollywood, CBS -- the top network in viewers but last in buzz -- announced something that made the Earth almost tremble. At least that's how it felt at the Beverly Hilton gathering, when television reporters simultaneously received a news release via e-mail that Mandy Patinkin is leaving the top-rated Criminal Minds under mysterious circumstances that, according to the statement, have nothing to do with salary or contract negotiations.
Why then would the star of a hit show just up and leave? The news release cited "creative differences."
But, according to show-runner Ed Bernero, no one knows. On the weekend, Bernero wrote that "everyone involved in the show has for two years bent over backward to give him ANYTHING he wanted."
Bernero wrote that the network and studio expected Patinkin to report for duty for the season premiere and he simply never showed. Patinkin played lead FBI profiler Jason Gideon in the crime drama co-produced by ABC Studios and CBS Paramount Network Television.
"He gave us no advance notice that anything was wrong, no opportunity to make the loss of the character work, no indication that we should be looking for someone else, no warning that we might have to rewrite the first seven scripts," Bernero added.
This is the second time the actor has left CBS hanging. In 1995, he quit the network's Chicago Hope after one season, then returned in 1999 for its last season.
But CBS should not take it personally. Patinkin was a no-show for a press tour PBS panel on which he was expected to participate last week.

There is a huge thread about this in the cast and crew section
Special Agent Jentzer - July 18, 2007 06:16 PM (GMT)
This is just all still so weird.....
Has anybody heard they were going to "downsize" gideons role with the team this year....hence the "artistic differences" comments?
uuughhhhhh.......season one dvd's, still my "comfort".....

Rach112 - July 18, 2007 07:35 PM (GMT)
Some sites are saying his role was being downsized, others are saying that wasn't the case so what are we meant to believe? I guess it doesn't matter now anyways but didn't Ed B deny that was the case?

Press Tour
Yesterday CBS exes met with the media to discuss the 2007/08 Season. Clearly the topic of Mandy P came up. Here are some statements from CBS Entertainment.
QUOTE
And now out comes CBS Entertainment president Nina Tassler and
*topic one turns out to be "Jericho"
(Tassler moves on...
*topic two "Kid Nation
Now comes the question about Mandy Patinkin, who just abandoned his hit show, "Criminal Minds," for unclear reasons. So. Uh. What happened?
Tassler: "First of all, Mandy came to us and came to me and asked to be released from the show. We were able to accommodate that request on his part. And right now it's a personal issue, and I think the show is accommodating his needs...
As we know about the audience on 'Criminal Minds,' people come to that show for the e-ticket, the white knuckle ride...but this is a personal issue."
Why would he leave a popular show? Especially given that this is the second popular show he's abandoned? "I can only hope that in the very near future that Mandy himself will be able to answer those questions."
Another question on Patinkin, and the varying versions of events, from 'creative differences' to 'personal issues.' So which is it?:
"I think creative differences is a euphemism for personal issues."
Wonder if she realizes she just used a euphemism to explain a euphemism?
An astute writer in the audience just couldn't shake loose that Mandy business, however, and pointed out to Nina that the press release announcing his departure had in fact cited "creative differences." Nina then issued what may go down as one of the classic lines in press tour history - a line that will be repeated fondly decades from now, and perhaps even wind up as the title of some book, maybe her autobiography.
All she would say is that Patinkin will appear in the second Criminal Minds episode. Since network officials didn't seem to have any idea he was planning to leave until he failed to show for a read-through of the season's first script, I expect there's a lot of rewriting going on in the halls of the Eye Network.
Tassler was quick to say that show would go on with a new actor (who hasn't been selected yet)
The questioning shifts back to Patinkin, another attempt to get to the bottom of his move: "I don't want to be a pain," Tassler says, "but I'll say again, I hope that in the near future Mandy will discuss this himself. This isn't the forum to discuss it. This is not the answer you want from me, I understand that. But this is not the place."
Oh wait, here comes still another Mandy question. As if this new combination of words might unlock the vault and get all the juicy facts tumbling out.

Wha? What...?!
Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo...

I think it's a little too early to judge Mandy so harshly. You don't send a jury to deliberate after hearing the prosecution but before the defense presents it's side of the case.
We don't know what's happened to him (and no one else seems to know for sure either.) I can understand why Mr. Bernero is upset, he certainly has reason to be, but I'm finding his comments to be rather unprofessional - no disrespect intended. The longer this goes on without explanation seems to indicate it could be more serious than just "creative differences"
I could be wrong...maybe he did just walk away. If that is the case then I will be very disappointed in his behavior but at this point I'm still willing to wait until we hear more.
Just my opinion.
ac5000 - July 20, 2007 03:07 AM (GMT)
i have purposely not commented too much on the situation until now. i agree with you guys who say that we shouldn't judge mandy until we hear his side of the story, but i cant help but say how disappointing this is. Hopefully he didn't just walk away from the cast, but we won't know until he gives a statement to us. i will remain in the gray area until we're clear on what happened. If it turns out that he DID just leave, i'll be VERY disappointed in him and will have lost a lot of respect for him. Until then, i think we should all pray that he is well and that he has a reasonable excuse for not wanting to come back.

from that new york times article:

“This is kind of unprecedented,” Mr. Bernero said in an interview. “He just quit and never talked to anyone again. It’s like the story about the father who goes out for a carton of milk and then just never comes home."
It is these types of comments I find so reckless….when you read/see this as well:
QUOTE
“Nina Tassler, the president of CBS Entertainment, declined to elaborate beyond the studios’ statement”
QUOTE
Bernero went on to say: The fact is that 16 million people watch this show, and he walked away from all of them and from us without explanation and apparently he still doesn’t feel they deserve one. |
I’m still in the belief…..what ever the reason, it is his reason, and I’m sure he did not make this decision without a lot of thought……….and he really does not owe me an explanation.

Moshpitpenguin - July 23, 2007 04:06 AM (GMT)
Wait- so are they getting a completely different actor to play Gideon?
I'm so confused. So very, very confused...
ac5000 - July 23, 2007 04:08 AM (GMT)
no...they're just bringing in someone new to play a new character. if they had someone new play Gideon, that would be the end for me.

from the "Hollywood Reporter"
QUOTE
You know these must be challenging times at CBS when we're reduced to paraphrasing sappy Barry Manilow tunes to describe the network's current predicament, but here goes: "Oh Mandy, you came and you left without giving (notice) ... and we need ya today ... oh Mandy!"
In one of the more perplexing stories of the summer (or any summer), the mystery of Mandy Patinkin's decision to ditch "Criminal Minds" -- the successful CBS drama in which he starred -- last week after two seasons remains, as of this writing, unsolved. Patinkin, ABC Studios and CBS Paramount Network Television explained in a statement that the abrupt departure stemmed from "creative differences."

read the whole article here.........Star's Exit more drama than CBS bargained for(This is actually a pretty good sumation of the week from hell....)
****SPOILERS****stop reading....it might not be real, but this is sort of were they might be headed.........
Writing Gideon out..........Spoiler.......
Looks like season three premiere will stay mainly "as is"....however,
Gideon?????.....Read will go look for his mentor (at the cabin) and their, Gideon leaves a note for Spencer, explaining how, "it just does not make any sense any more...."
then present day......gideon at a diner.. .......pays his bill.......and off he drives.....into the sunset............
(as this is a spoiler....expect the unexpected)
**I wonder how/when Doubt will be aired.....maybe a flashback?? not knowing??**
Rach112 - July 24, 2007 09:00 PM (GMT)
That's how they might be writing him out? Well, it's not what I expected anyways...
Special Agent Jentzer - July 29, 2007 07:12 AM (GMT)
but I want it to be about "Doubt".....the last time we see Gideon.... :ph43r:
sandersidle - July 29, 2007 11:10 PM (GMT)
PAH. You have no idea how much I want to see Doubt. I read a spoiler about it and I really wanted to see it and then the day it was supposed to air I found out it was posponed and then I heard it was going to be in the new season but now maybe it won't be aired at all. D:
I love this show! - August 7, 2007 01:43 AM (GMT)
I think I'd rather see Doubt as it was originally intended to air. I can handle if it's out of order.....I think so many things have changed now that it could be so chopped up.......
I want to see an ending to Gideon that is worthy of his character.
