Title: Beating The Block

Emmylou - April 14, 2006 11:28 AM (GMT)
Does anyone have advice on how to get over Writer's Block?

I've had it for months - just can't write a word. I plan the story, but either my enthusiasm wanes or I just can't write it.

Does anyone else have similar experiences?

I've been lucky that I've been writing solidly since April last year. However, there are times when the words refuse me... So I edit old pieces (sometimes that brings it back) or I've tried what Sarah McLachlan does... Bake cookies :) She has some excellent recipes in her cookbook. What else can I say? How one handles said problem is a very individual thing. Once you find your solution, keep it close… Once that solution fails you, find another, until you have several avenues.
Most writers avoid said topic for fear of being blocked themselves. The last piece I wrote was sort of born out of a mini-block... Well I make myself write 20 min everyday if I'm not so far into a piece... Sometimes that 20 min turns into something... That last piece was saved as a CM dribble or something like that (I found myself in there more often then not, having no idea why), but it kept nagging at me to actually finish... Once I changed the direction (wrote a whole new introduction) it wrote itself... I don't put pressure on myself to write something... Heck I don't even do the outlines/character sketches/location description/etc. you're supposed to (I'm bad that way)... I just write whatever comes out of me and hope that others enjoy it.

Heavens to Betsy!

(That seems to be my most-used phrase, as of late!)

I don't know.

I just usually wait it out.

And whine it out. :P

It's annoying, because there will be times when I have the motivation to write, but don't want to at the same time.

AGH!

Just thinking about it makes me want to croak!

That's the whole thing with talking about it... no one really has an answer... Like I said you do whatever you have to do to get through it... Be it maybe a walk, or listening to a certain kind of music... Can't think of anything else right now... I'm working on something that's a bit awkward and I'm hoping it will start to make some sense... Eventually... Or it will drive me nuttier then I already am ;)

It happens to me all the time, even though I don't usually write.. I just wait it out, which obviously doesn't work.. I have probably attempted to write FanFiction 100 times, but this ALWAYS happens. I just have to wait to get into that mood again. sometimes music gets me in the spirit.. Not like classical though.. Like Hip Hop, something that makes you want to get up and dance, you know? lol.

Maybe for me, it's the essay writing that I had to do for four years (and no excuses as to why it's not done on time) that helps with this... The discipline is there; it’s just a matter of hammering out the idea I guess... But I always have music on, so for me I think that helps a great deal. I don't know... Babbling again...

This was told to me by a graduate professor I used to work for. He has six textbooks published so I trust his advice...and it seems to work for me.

Write...just put pen to paper and keep it moving...the words that come out may really suck, but you can edit it later...just write. :)

Good Luck!

That's what the writing exercises do for me... Some of them do suck, but I put them away, sometimes that little bit of dribble can be used as much-needed filler later on (thank goodness for computers, or I'd have notebooks to go through)...
