I like how it ended...I thought sure that it was Milagros killing the UnSub by herself!

~)~

Kyle, we have two new things to consider... ;)

J.J. - April 14, 2006 01:47 AM (GMT)
I thought it was different. I am not as familiar with Mexican culture, so I cannot comment as to whether or not it was an accurate portrayal...

The only comment that I can really think of right now is that Gideon changed his shirts about like four times, vs. the others wardrobe changes (I must be losing my mind, if distracted by his attire)...

*applauds*

Yes.

Congratulations.

You are losing your mind!

J.J. - April 14, 2006 02:59 AM (GMT)
Great! Good to know I'm not the only one who thinks that...
At the very least one has to be sane in order to recognise that he/she is not... Right?

Another point that drives me nuts is the use of a toothpick (Gideon) That sooo opens the door for Freud you know?? Stage Two: Oral fixation much?? Really bad I know, but that's the first thing that pops into my head (I have no idea what it is... I thought it was going to be a one ep thing, but that's about three eps or so now)...

GideonsGirlAnanke - April 14, 2006 06:16 PM (GMT)
I think it makes him look uncharacteristically like a hick.

Very not cool!

That's true and draws one attention to his teeth... and doesn't really seem to fit the 'refined' character that he was at the beginning the series...

After wondering if I had lost my mind, I had to wonder how does one lose that which they do not posses? *I'm in a very odd mood right now... Excuse me please while I attempt to redirect the conversation back to the topic.

Another quick observation: If they (Gideon/Hotchner) had read Elle's file, wouldn't they know that she spoke Spanish?? Why was everyone so shocked?? (isn't Spanish the US's second official language?)

Precisely!

And why did they have to have a Mexican ep to have her speak Spanish, when there are Latinos all over the US?

~)~

But it's obvious that -- despite her last name (which sounds Italian) -- Lola really is part Latina (if not entirely!) Not only is her Spanish flawless, but she's even got the accent!

I learned in one of my psychology classes that in order to get an accent, a child has to learn a language before age 12. Ten bucks says that she's from Cuba -- not just her mother!

This has to be one of my favorite episodes...I liked that we saw more of Elle. Her character really needs development and some backstory. The whole episode was unique and very interesting and original. I liked it very much.

Kyle - April 15, 2006 05:12 AM (GMT)
I really enjoyed the episode. Yeah though, in Mexican culture, family definetely comes first.

Anyways, yeah, I was always wondering why Garcia was white, yet her last name was Spanish! lol

Anyways, I really liked seeing Elle too. she was finally on the spolight, which was awesome.

J.J. - April 16, 2006 10:45 PM (GMT)
I guess they have to refine how they handle character background. The actors are still learning 'to be' and the writers probably don't have everything ironed out yet... I think a really good ep that encompasses something similar in all them would help with getting the background through a series of flashbacks, or whatever... This little bit here and there is a pain in the neck! (when I'm trying to deal with writing a background~ish story)...

Otherwise, I quite liked it. Anyone speak Spanish and have any idea what Garcia said?? I only speak English and a bit of French (enough to get around Quebec, but I want to learn the proper French).

greenleo - April 17, 2006 12:30 AM (GMT)
I speak Russian and Spanish. So maybe I can help you...What do you need me to translate?

GideonsGirlAnanke - April 17, 2006 12:43 AM (GMT)
It was something simple enough for me to translate, I can remember that much...

That, and my memory also tells me that there's a pretty good chance that she screwed it up!

J.J. - April 17, 2006 01:05 AM (GMT)
I can't remember what she says exactly, but Morgan replies by saying that she probably offended someone in the room...
Wish I had written it down.. If they repeat it, which they may tonite or mon or tues (whatever CTV does... boneheads) I'll see if I can get the line.

I just saw this episode last night. This is one of my favourite episodes to date. As well as appealing to my interest in Mexican culture, I liked hearing Elle speak spanish and I thought Captain Navarro was good too. It was interesting to learn a little more about Elle's background and Garcia's.

Garcia's scene, as usual, made me smile. What exactly did she say?

Mrs_Reid - August 8, 2006 08:05 PM (GMT)
I didnt understand a single word Garcia said.. i'll have to watch it again..

I love this eppy... I wonder if they actually came to Mexico to shoot it.. anyways some of the actor's spanish was uhm.. awkward.. yeah thats the word.. I liked Elle's and Reid got the tranlation of doghouse right.. ''Casa del perro'' ..

Overall.. great eppy ::thumbs up::

Rach112 - August 8, 2006 10:12 PM (GMT)
Donde esta, my lovelies? Es bueno, no? Tripero, esta-la?

According to the transcript site, this is what Garcia said

Mrs_Reid - August 13, 2006 07:07 PM (GMT)
LOL.. i have no idea what Tripero esta-la means ..
The other part was something liek :
''Where are my lovelies, Is that good, no?``

Special Agent Jentzer - February 18, 2007 06:36 AM (GMT)
Not to confuse anybody, but cbs showed "MACHISMO" tonight (sat feb 17th season one, episode 19...featuring Lola Glaudini as Supervisory Special Agent Elle Greenaway....since retired from the BAU) :(

second time around, I thought it might be, sort of reflective, to re-open this original thread.......
I really love this episode, it actually, in hindsight, might be top of my favorite list....

It was nice to see Elle and Morgan kicking down doors, guns drawn. I truly don't see that with Prentiss, (which is huge, you have to trust your partner and firmly believe they have your back).

The communication and linguistics were great, nice to see Dr. Spencer Reid and Garcia trying out their Spanish! I laughed when Dr. Spencer Reid commented the second time, looking at Elle, seeking her approval...and her little nod of reassurance. <_<

You forget the little insights into peoples lives, like Elle being Cuban and Garcia taking the last name of her step father, helping develop the characters. And JJ was really hands on with the interviews which was interesting......I am going to forever be watching how she interacts in the field after her "cujo" episode......not enough of garcia but....did Gideon really change his clothes five times? lol

Donde esta, my lovelies? Es bueno, no? Tripero, esta-la? (Where this, my lovelies? Is that good, no? Tribut, this-the.....the babel fish translation)....kyle, this was the epsiode you were to pay attention to the spanish LOL

Great of CBS to be showing more than one episode a week, I'm sure it gives all you newbies a BIG reason to go out and buy season one DVD!!
And as always, very nice to see the talented and very fine ms glaudini

I actually only just saw this episode last night - not sure why but apparently missed it the first time around. I actually really enjoyed it - being in another country with a distinctly different culture really brought out some interesting aspects to some of the characters.

1) Elle's right, Reid's only a genius in English - I took Spanish in high school and when I heard him speak it I started to laugh.

2) Gracia took French and has a step-father

3) Elle is part Cuban and worked in sex-crimes

4) Hotch can't hold a baby properly, but he can profile a disorganized psychopath

I also found it interesting that the Mexican cop comments on how Reid definition of The Day of the Dead sound like it was read from a book as that's a sign of Asperger's Syndrome which I'm increasingly beginning to think Reid actually has. I also found the response of both Hotch - (paraphrasing) "He always sounds like that" - and Reid - (paraphrasing) "I did read it from a book. I picked it up at the airport!" - rather amusing.

I also liked that I, personally, seem to be getting better at "co-profiling" -- like when I discovered the victim I already knew this would be a man who feels (if not is) impotent and other such things.

SPOILER!!! (Just in case folks still missed it and don't wanna know the end)

-------------------------

I enjoyed the ending as well - "Now he doesn't have to pretend to be a woman" :P

CalleighElleDakota - November 23, 2007 12:36 PM (GMT)
Well, I lived in Mexico for 9 1/2 months and they made quite a good job portraying the culture...Well, just because the fact that Elle speaks Spanish is written in her personal file doesn't mean that Morgan would know (and when I'm right he was the own who was most surprised...)

JJ_16 - November 24, 2007 01:17 AM (GMT)
yeah i took two years of spanish in high school.. ried is only a genius in english...his spanish very bad.

CalleighElleDakota - November 26, 2007 11:50 AM (GMT)
I have to agree with you...
