Title: ANGOLA island update
Description: Map to be developed by

ObmaR - May 6, 2007 11:54 PM (GMT)
Ebud has undertaken to make the ANGOLA border map for the mod. With his excelent skills we are well on the way to developing the backbone to a top quality mod

ebud - May 8, 2007 06:11 AM (GMT)
If anyone who reads this has access to elevation files or higher res sat images please contact me. I have lo res elevation data of the area, but thats at 90m resolution. Not very good. Anything better costs $$$$.

I'll get on it once my work for CWR is done.

ObmaR - May 8, 2007 07:58 AM (GMT)
Hi Ebud,
If you go to the sa soldier website through our links page, they have a google earth coordinates page for satelite images of most military bases. South African and Angolan during the war. Hope that helps. Also want to thank you for your undertaking of the ANGOLA island project. I can now concentrate on the addons with peace of mind. We have tons of work ahead and I thank you for the help. Love your Tonal Redux, excelent work.

Raptor - May 8, 2007 08:27 PM (GMT)
cool, great to hear.

Wish you a good work ebud. :)

ObmaR - October 3, 2007 05:25 PM (GMT)
Well Ebud has been hard at work with the "ANGOLA" island and sent us some WIP screens of the Cuito Cuanavale area including the Lomba Valley region.

Ebud also let us know that Berghoff is making an African Savanha nature pack for us to use in the map. I will keep us updated with WIP screens and INFO regarding the map on this thread.

We are looking for someone to join the team and who will specialise in only making African Extras for placement in the map eg huts, kraals, bomas, tents, hangers, military bases etc. Anyone interested please email me bushwars@hotmail.com a couple of screens of your work would be appreciated.

MiG - October 3, 2007 09:56 PM (GMT)
Amazing work, Eric :o
I've found some aerial pictures from Cuito Cuanavale here. It might interest...

ObmaR - October 3, 2007 11:11 PM (GMT)
Here is an excellent site about the SADF during the bushwar it has placemarks for Google Earth of bases during the bushwar,

http://www.sa-soldier.com/data/index.htm

click on the Google Earth link

I did my military service (Signals Corps) at the one called Ondangwa, was a 2nd Lieutenant at the Ondangwa AFB radar facilities (1982 - 1984)

Also has a good reference for google Earth satelite placemarks of other bases and camps. There is one of Cuito Cuanavale to give you an idea of terain.

Raptor - November 1, 2007 10:03 AM (GMT)
Hi,
now Ebud send us a pre alpha version of our miniteaser island.
So we can take a first look at it and of cause some screens for you.

"To the North West is the Cuito river and the Cuanavale river to the North East. South East is the beginning of the Lomba Valley. This area will include the towns of Savate to the South, Mavinga and Jamba to the South East and Tumpo just South of Cuito Cuanavale."

The shown Map is just a placeholder to get a view on the topography of the area.
Berghoff is also going to donate some African trees, shrubs, bushes etc. for our map.

so enjoy.

I'm studying cartography at the moment. So give me a shout if there is anything I can do. I doubt it though, as the game should draw the map automaticly.

Rellikki - November 1, 2007 03:13 PM (GMT)
Looks very interesting!
I posted some news on Armedassault.Info... ;)

ObmaR - November 2, 2007 07:20 AM (GMT)
Thanks for that Rellikki, can't wait to get things done so you guys can start making some real missions....

steele6 - November 2, 2007 10:57 AM (GMT)
what other island are the Bush Mod team planning? what about the border zone? (not sure where that is) i think in zambia?? i may be wrong.

ObmaR - November 2, 2007 09:30 PM (GMT)
The main map we are making is called "Angola" and is based on the conflict border area between South West Africa (Namibia) and Southern Angola. The northern town of the map is Cassinga, East is Cuango Cubango, South is Oshivelo and East is Cahama. The Cuito Cuanavale map we are making is a teaser map for our Mini Mod release this December. The Mod is taking a lot more time to make than we anticipated and we might only release the main mod and Angola map for ArmA II next year.

steele6 - November 3, 2007 01:26 PM (GMT)
To release a (demo ) of your mod is an excellent idea for december.

also, to release the full mod for Arma II is a wise decision as no sooner than you release your full pack for Arma I, BIS will release Arma II( probably) so then your players will move on.

closer to time will you give us an update on what you plan to include in the mod demo for december?

I think what would be quite important is a few missions to show off your work. /campaigns B)

Vorster - January 5, 2008 03:41 PM (GMT)
Gents good work how ever some points I want to make.

South Eastern Angola is not semi arid it is more savannah with dense bush around the rivers. A very important feature of this area is the so called shona. A shona is a seasonal flood plain next many of the deep fast flowing rivers of this area. A typical shona is normally up to 1000m deep and can strech for 2000m along the length of the river. The shona is fringed by very dense bush which can be up to 5000m deep.

The rest of the area is Savannah with low thorn trees and grass ranging from short tuffs to long Buffalo grass. This grass saved more than one Ratel.

Here is some unpubllished pics of the area

Hi Bergly,

your trees are as usual top quality and very acurate in appearance. I am definately using your African pack for our islands. I do have a special request and that is if you could make a few variations of the Acacia tree (African Umbrella Thorn) as that is the most predominant tree of the area we are basing our map on Northern Namibia - South Central Angola a few Baobab trees would also be welcome.

I will be posting some pics of tree species common in the area we are basing our mod. Also would it be possible if you could make some African Elephant Grass and the drier more yellowish Buffalo Grass. It would give our landscape a more realistic look. I have PM you

Thank you very much for making the African Tree pack, it is a well needed addon for ArmA and especialy for our project. All your work that is used in our project will be fully credited to you. Please keep posting pics here of your WIPs.

Bergly - March 3, 2008 01:13 PM (GMT)

ObmaR - March 15, 2008 05:58 AM (GMT)
The Baobab looks excellent, I like the Acacias in the background as well... I'll add a few authentic Herero huts and you would think you where in Owamboland

FALCON 1 - March 17, 2008 03:39 AM (GMT)
"Myyy Saaarie Marais is so vêr van my af....!" :P

Absolutely Brilliant work on the trees so far sir! Makes me feel right at home already.

It was literally "a thorn in the flesh" to end up in one of those canopies after doing a para-jump over the African veld. <_<

I am now working on some shrubs and some more trees.

Hopefully I can send you beta of tree pack in few days.

ObmaR - March 20, 2008 05:09 AM (GMT)
The pack is looking great and you've covered most of the common species. I do have a small request however as it will help with our island for ArmAII. Would you be willing to create some grass species. The ones we need are the tall Elephant grass and the shorter and denser buffalo grass. These 2 are the predominant species of the African bush

Bergly - March 20, 2008 11:27 AM (GMT)
Yes im working on elephant grass aswell. :)

Here is latest version screen:

The grass is looking good Berghoff, I had no idea you had started making the grass for the pack. Could it be possible for you to make a drier version of the grass (more yellow and drier looking) especialy the buffalo grass?
