That button scared the crap out of me when I saw it at first. Then I read the announcements thread.
I have a question, though. Do you expect any income at all from this?
Malloy - March 1, 2006 01:09 AM (GMT)
No income.....it'll all go back to the forums (unless it sits under 5$ for a while, but then it'll sit under 5$).
The mods will be getting regular updates and proof that the money is going back to the community.
Sol1 - March 1, 2006 01:18 AM (GMT)
What I mean is, do you expect anyone to donate money? This forum is a great place, but it's free. As much as I'd like the ads to go away, I can't see them, so it doesn't matter. I'm just wondering if you'd get any money at all from this.
MilkmanAl - March 1, 2006 01:44 AM (GMT)
It won't much to accomplish our goals, so yes, we do expect people to donate money. If every active member donated 50 cents a month, we'd be swimming in extra cash even after the ads were blocked.
Chaotix - March 1, 2006 01:58 AM (GMT)
I can see your serious, however, I think that if you want real proof, dont just tell the mods, Show EVERYBODY how the money is being spent.
MilkmanAl - March 1, 2006 02:09 AM (GMT)
I interpreted it as the mod team will decide how to use the money, but everyone will see or be informed of the benefits gleaned. In short, everyone will be kept abreast of where his money is going.
Malloy - March 1, 2006 02:20 AM (GMT)
For security risk I will not be posting transaction receipts for the public eye to see....only the mods will see these. All members will be kept up to date and certain things will be shown to them, do not worry about that. If no one donates, the worst thing to happen is nothing. If they donate, the ads will go away and things will start getting better for this community. It all depends on you the members.
Chaotix - March 1, 2006 02:30 AM (GMT)
And hopefully the mods.
I think maybe donators should be given the benefit of seeing exactly what happened to the money.

Well im a cheap person and to lazy to ramble up a credit card o me dads (DAMN MY AGE) and the button is so close to the button I use the most the baron's bazaar to refresh without pressing refresh and then reload and shit.....
snaky69 - March 1, 2006 03:21 AM (GMT)
Hey, our currency looks cooler than yours :P
When I turn 18, I'll have access to a credit card and I will gladly donate.
Malloy - March 1, 2006 01:12 PM (GMT)
I'd like it to remain anonymous. No reason to try to make one member look better than another.
You guys will be told where the money is going, you just won't have any statements posted to view. All the mods will be able to see the statements. Once again, security risk denies me the right to post a statement for everyone to view. I may end up posting modified statements without personal data.....but I'll decide on that as I go.
As for American to Canadian dolars, this changes everyday. Our dollar typically stands at about 0.85C American.
Malloy - March 1, 2006 01:14 PM (GMT)
And I moved it to the right side of the page.

I agree, but i got a small idea
We should have something minor to show apreciation to donators! A good example that i can think of is with the changing of name color. We all know mods have the beautiful blue red or green names. How bout we give the donators a little recognition by doing something like changing there name color or somthing like that?
Malloy - March 1, 2006 10:20 PM (GMT)
I don't have a way of knowing who donated....all I get is the amount and the e-mail of the person. I will discuss this with the mods.....one thing can be done.

For the name change (colour, etc.) our answer is no. Several reasons we came up with:
1) We do not want members that cannot donate feel like they aren't worth anything.
2) We do not want members that donate to get an advantage over other members.
3) The definition of donation would contradict such an action.
4) Donating to a cause is a personal choice that many people wouldn't want to share.

I'm rather surprised on how well this project has started. If it keeps this way we won't need to worry about ads anymore.

15 Dollars a month???
I thought it was a year.
Malloy - March 2, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
0.15$ American for 1000 views. so that 15$ will cover 100,000 views. This is enough for quite a while.
82,000 views for the month of January + index views.
Basically, 15$ will last about one and a half to two months. I figured and average cost of 8.45$ per month but that may vary dramatically with the amount of views and members.
jleer - March 2, 2006 08:49 PM (GMT)
Depends on how busy the bazaar is; should last us about a month and a half.
edit beat by 2 seconds

I shall donate 15$ when I get a credit card, then :)

for a vast array of reasons
edit: btw, those 1000 views/$0.15....
does each time i switch forums/open a thread/refresh a page that "should" have ads on count as 1 view? don't suppose you have a link to the info from invisionfree.com on all this.....
Malloy - March 6, 2006 01:14 PM (GMT)
I can't link you to what I read because it is in the admin panel but:
http://invisionfree.com/index.php?p=adsThat section explains it just as well.
sambo. - March 6, 2006 01:56 PM (GMT)
thanx for that Malloy
that reads like a "yes, every page change/refresh/whatever where ads are "blocked" is a "page view"....
i don't like the bit about "-1000 credits", sounds a bit mephistophelese'ian to me.
myeah, we move, i move. we stay, i stay.....
